Why Consider a Masters in Finance in France?
France now runs the strongest concentration of pre-experience finance masters in the world, and it does so at roughly half the cost of an equivalent UK or US degree. That combination is the real argument, not the Eiffel Tower.
The finance job market is concentrated in Paris and La Dรฉfense, where BNP Paribas, Sociรฉtรฉ Gรฉnรฉrale, Amundi, AXA and the Paris offices of the global investment banks recruit. Programs at the leading schools are taught in English, so French is not a barrier to admission, though it becomes one at the hiring stage for some corporate finance roles.

There is also a policy layer that applies specifically to Indian applicants. France has committed to hosting 30,000 Indian students by 2030, backed by an expanded Campus France network in India, and it created a dedicated alumni visa for Indian master's graduates. No other European country has made India-specific commitments at this level. If you are weighing a finance master's against an MBA, our guide to the MBA in France for Indian students covers that comparison.
Counselor insight: The students who do best out of French finance programs are the ones who start learning French anyway, at A2 or B1 level, before they land. Admissions does not need it. A Paris corporate finance team interviewing you in month nine of your job hunt often does. Six months of Duolingo will not get you there, but a structured course through Alliance Franรงaise in your city will.
Best Schools for a Masters in Finance in France: The 2026 FT Ranking
HEC Paris is no longer the world's top-ranked master's in finance, and almost every Indian guide still says it is. In the Financial Times 2026 pre-experience ranking, ESCP Business School took first place for the fourth consecutive year, and HEC Paris slipped to seventh. HEC's own rankings page confirms this: seventh worldwide, fifth in Europe.
| School | FT 2026 rank | Program | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESCP Business School | 1 | MSc in Finance (Paris and London) | 15 months |
| Skema Business School | 2 | MSc Financial Markets & Investments | 12 to 18 months |
| ESSEC Business School | 4 | Master in Finance | 12 to 18 months (M2) or 2 years (M1+M2) |
| EDHEC Business School | 5 | MSc Corporate Finance & Banking, MSc Financial Markets | 12 to 18 months |
| HEC Paris | 7 | MSc International Finance | 12 to 16 months |
| Emlyon Business School | 11 | MSc Finance | 12 to 24 months |
| Grenoble Ecole de Management | 28 | MSc Finance | 12 to 18 months |
Only the ESCP figure is taken from the school's own fee page. Every other tuition figure available during research came from aggregators, and the fee bands they publish disagree with each other. Writer must pull each school's official fee page and 2027 intake deadlines before this table goes live. Rankings and durations above are verified.
Two things the ranking does not tell you. First, position movement at this level is small and driven partly by alumni salary survey response, so treating rank 1 as decisively better than rank 5 is a mistake. Second, several of these are one-year programs, and program length has consequences for your right to stay in France afterwards. That is covered further down, and it matters more than a two-place ranking difference.
Counselor insight: Indian applicants routinely shortlist by rank and then discover the school never had a track matching their target role. ESCP splits into investment banking and financial markets tracks; EDHEC is known for asset pricing and risk. Read the track structure before the ranking. A student aiming at equity research who lands in a corporate finance track has wasted a year.
Grande รcole, Public University or Mastรจre Spรฉcialisรฉ: Three Very Different Routes
The keyword covers three routes with an eightfold cost difference, and most guides average them into one meaningless range.
Grande รฉcole MSc. ESCP, ESSEC, EDHEC, Skema, HEC. Taught in English, 12 to 18 months, heavy career services, structured internship, and a cohort with strong recruiter access. This is the expensive route and the one that produces the salary outcomes the rankings measure.
Public university master's. Universitรฉ Paris-Dauphine, Panthรฉon-Sorbonne, Paris-Saclay, Aix-Marseille. Academically rigorous, often quantitative, and dramatically cheaper. Two years (M1 plus M2), more French-language teaching, and thinner career services. Dauphine's finance master's is affiliated with the PSL graduate program in finance and is well regarded in French markets, though less visible to Indian recruiters.
Mastรจre Spรฉcialisรฉ. A French post-master's qualification accredited by the Confรฉrence des Grandes รcoles. Usually taken after a master's, so relevant if you already hold an Indian master's degree.
For an Indian student the honest split is this: if you want investment banking or a Paris market role and can fund it, the grande รฉcole route buys recruiter access you cannot replicate. If you want a quantitative finance or research career and are cost-sensitive, the public route delivers the same technical training for a tenth of the tuition, and you accept doing more of your own networking.
Counselor insight: The public route has a hidden entry barrier that fees do not show. Selective public master's programs often run their own application platforms with January to February windows, and several teach partly in French even when the brochure says international. Confirm the language of instruction module by module, not from the program summary.
Cost of a Masters in Finance in France for Indian Students
Grande รฉcole route, using ESCP's published 2026 entry fees
| Component | EUR | INR |
|---|---|---|
| Core courses | โฌ17,500 | Rs.19.20 lakh |
| Finance specialisation | โฌ12,000 | Rs.13.17 lakh |
| Student service and registration | โฌ2,300 | Rs.2.52 lakh |
| Total program | โฌ31,800 | Rs.34.90 lakh |
| Non-refundable acceptance deposit | โฌ3,600 | Rs.3.95 lakh |
| Additional online semester if under 240 ECTS | โฌ4,700 | Rs.5.16 lakh |
| Application fee | โฌ130 | Rs.14,266 |
All conversions use Rs.109.74 per EUR.
That ECTS line is the one Indian applicants get caught by. A three-year Indian BCom, BBA or BA Economics is generally 180 ECTS, not 240. ESCP requires candidates entering with fewer than 240 ECTS to complete an additional online semester at โฌ4,700 (Rs.5.16 lakh). A four-year BTech or an Indian master's usually clears the threshold. Check this before you budget, because it moves your total by more than five lakh rupees.
Public university route, 2026-27 published rates
| Component | EUR | INR |
|---|---|---|
| Differentiated master's fee, non-EU | โฌ3,950/year | Rs.4.33 lakh |
| National rate, EU students, for comparison | โฌ255/year | Rs.27,984 |
| CVEC student life contribution | โฌ105/year | Rs.11,523 |
Exchange rate used: Rs.109.74 per EUR. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.
One important change: a decree published in May 2026 caps university exemptions from the differentiated fee at 30% for 2027-28, falling to 25% and then 20% in subsequent years. Universities used to waive this fee for large numbers of non-EU students. That discretion is now limited, so do not assume an exemption.
Living costs. Paris runs โฌ1,195 to โฌ1,778 per month (Rs.1.31 lakh to Rs.1.95 lakh) covering accommodation, transport, utilities and groceries. Lyon, Lille and Grenoble come in meaningfully lower. Our cost of studying in France guide breaks this down by city, and the cost of studying in France for Indian students page covers the full annual budget.
Visa and process costs. The long-stay visa is โฌ50 (Rs.5,487) for applicants in รtudes en France countries, which includes India. The โฌ99 figure quoted in many guides applies to non-EEF countries. The Campus France procedure fee is charged separately in rupees.
Scholarships. The Charpak Scholarship is India-specific, awarded by the French Embassy in India, with a monthly stipend of around โฌ860 (Rs.94,376) plus visa and Campus France fee waivers. The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship pays about โฌ1,181 (Rs.1.30 lakh) per month at master's level but does not cover tuition, and it runs through university nomination rather than direct application. Neither typically covers grande รฉcole tuition in full.
Counselor insight: Indian families consistently underbudget the deposit. ESCP's is โฌ3,600 and it is non-refundable, payable on accepting the offer, well before your visa is decided. Plan for the possibility of paying a deposit and then facing a visa problem. That risk is small but it is real, and it should be funded from savings rather than the education loan.
Eligibility and Documents for a Masters in Finance in France
There is no French pre-visa document called an "APS certificate," despite what several ranking guides claim. In the French system APS means Autorisation Provisoire de Sรฉjour, which is a post-study residence permit. Nothing by that name is required before your visa, and no visa is refused for lacking it.
| Requirement | What schools expect | India-specific note |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree | Recognised degree, quantitative background preferred | Check the ECTS count; a 3-year Indian degree is often 180, not 240 |
| Academic transcripts | All years, plus degree certificate | Provisional certificates accepted at application stage |
| GMAT or GRE | Often optional, sometimes recommended | Several schools accept CAT or TAGE-MAGE as alternatives; confirm per program. |
| English proficiency | IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 or TOEFL equivalent typically | Required even from English-medium Indian universities in most cases |
| French | Not required for English-taught programs | Useful for internships and hiring, not for admission |
| SOP and LORs | Motivation letter plus 2 to 3 references | Write a separate letter per program inside รtudes en France |
| Passport | Valid well beyond course end | Renew before starting the EEF file if validity is short |
| Proof of funds | Set by the consulate, not the school | At least โฌ615 per month (Rs.67,490), so about โฌ7,380 (Rs.8.10 lakh) for a year, plus tuition |
Counselor insight: The proof-of-funds figure is where Indian applications fail, not the academics. โฌ615 per month is a floor, and consulates look at whether the money has been in the account for a while rather than appearing as a single deposit the week before. Build the balance over three to six months and keep the statements clean.
Application Timeline for the Masters in Finance in France 2027-28 Intake
French business schools admit in rounds, and Indian applicants have an extra mandatory layer in Campus France's รtudes en France procedure, which must be completed before the consulate will accept a visa application.
| Month | What to do | India-specific note |
|---|---|---|
| Oct to Nov 2026 | Shortlist programs; check track structure and ECTS requirements | The EEF platform opens for the following academic year in this window |
| Nov to Dec 2026 | Take IELTS or TOEFL; take GMAT or GRE if your target schools want it | Book test slots early; Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi centres fill fast |
| Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 | Submit Round 1 or Round 2 school applications | Earlier rounds carry better scholarship odds at most schools |
| Jan to Feb 2027 | Create the รtudes en France file; upload academics and language proof | Documents in Hindi or a regional language need certified translation |
| Feb to Apr 2027 | Charpak Scholarship window typically opens; attend the Campus France interview | Campus France India issues no NOC; you receive an email clearing you to proceed |
| Mar to May 2027 | Receive offers; accept and pay the deposit | Deposits are non-refundable; confirm the ECTS supplement before paying |
| May to Jun 2027 | Apply for the VLS-TS visa on France-Visas; book the VFS appointment | Proof of funds must already be seasoned in the account |
| Jun to Aug 2027 | Visa processing; arrange accommodation and insurance | Paris housing is the hardest part; start before the visa decision |
| Aug to Sep 2027 | Travel; validate the VLS-TS online within 3 months of arrival; pay the CVEC | Validation is a legal requirement, not an optional step |
| Sep to Oct 2027 | Program begins | Most grande รฉcole MSc Finance intakes start in September or October |
Counselor insight: Do not treat the Campus France interview as a formality. It is a short conversation about why this program, why France and how you are funding it, and interviewers do flag inconsistencies between the SOP and what you say. Students who had never read their own motivation letter aloud are the ones who stumble.
Post-Study Work After a Masters in Finance in France
The post-study route is a temporary residence card called recherche d'emploi ou crรฉation d'entreprise (RECE), still widely referred to as APS. Under the general French rule it is valid for 12 months and is not renewable.
Two corrections to what circulates online, including on some of our own older pages.
The five-year visa is not a work visa. Campus France announced that Indian citizens holding a master's who spent at least one semester in France can apply for a five-year short-stay Schengen visa. That is a circulation visa for future travel, useful if your career involves European clients. It does not permit you to live or work in France.
Program length can affect eligibility. The RECE card requires the grade de master or an MSc carrying the Confรฉrence des Grandes รcoles label. Sciences Po states that students who completed only a one-year master's are not eligible for the RECE card. Since most elite French MSc Finance programs run 12 to 15 months, this is a question to settle with the school in writing before you accept an offer.
Other mechanics worth knowing. During your studies you may work up to 964 hours a year, roughly 60% of full-time. On the RECE card you are looking for a role linked to your training, and converting to a work permit generally requires a salary of at least 1.5 times the French minimum wage, about โฌ30,767 gross per year (Rs.33.76 lakh). For an ESCP or ESSEC finance graduate in Paris that threshold is not the constraint. For a graduate of a lower-ranked program without French, it can be.
Indian guides state consistently that Indian master's graduates receive 12 months renewable once, for 24 months total, under an India-France bilateral mobility agreement. No French government or Campus France India page confirming this was located during research. Confirm with Campus France India before publishing any 24-month claim. Our own post-study work visa in France page also currently describes a five-year post-study work visa, which needs correcting separately.
Counselor insight: Treat the RECE year as a 12-month countdown that starts before you graduate, not after. The students who convert it into a job are the ones who used their program internship as the entry point and had a conversion conversation with that employer by month three. Starting a cold job hunt in month one of the permit is starting late.
What to Do When Things Go Wrong
Your Campus France interview does not go well. There is no formal pass or fail, but a weak interview can slow your file. Ask what additional documentation would help, supply it promptly, and make sure your SOP and your spoken answers describe the same plan.
Your visa is refused on financial grounds. This is the most common refusal reason. Get the written refusal, identify whether the issue was the amount, the source or the seasoning of the funds, fix that specific point and reapply. Do not simply resubmit the same statements.
Your final results are delayed past a school deadline. Request a provisional certificate and a bonafide letter from your college. Most French schools issue conditional offers against them, but tell admissions early rather than missing a round.
You have not found a job by month eight of your RECE card. Widen from investment banking to corporate finance, treasury, audit and financial control, and consider Lyon and Lille alongside Paris. Also start the conversion conversation with your internship employer well before the card expires.
You cannot follow interviews conducted in French. Enrol in intensive French from your first semester rather than your last. Many schools offer it free or at low cost to enrolled students, and it is the single highest-return use of your spare hours.
Counselor insight: Keep every email from admissions, Campus France and the consulate in one folder from day one. When a deposit refund or a deadline extension is disputed months later, the students who get resolved outcomes are the ones who can produce a dated message.
3 Takeaways on Masters in Finance in France
A masters in finance in France is a strong option for Indian students in 2027-28, provided you choose the route deliberately rather than by ranking alone.
- Use the current ranking, not the one every guide repeats. ESCP is first and HEC Paris is seventh in the FT's 2026 table, and France holds four of the top five.
- Check your ECTS count before you budget. A three-year Indian bachelor's is often 180 ECTS, which can trigger a bridging semester costing around Rs.5.16 lakh at the grande รฉcoles.
- Settle the post-study question in writing before you accept. The RECE card requires the grade de master or a CGE-labelled MSc, so confirm with the school that your specific program qualifies.

Frequently Asked Questions About Masters in Finance in France
-
What scholarships are available for Indian students?
The Charpak Scholarship is exclusive to Indian students, awarded through the French Embassy in India, with a stipend of about โฌ860 monthly (Rs.94,376) plus visa and Campus France fee waivers. The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship pays roughly โฌ1,181 monthly (Rs.1.30 lakh) at master's level but excludes tuition and requires university nomination. Neither usually covers grande รฉcole tuition in full.
-
Is the five-year visa for Indian students a work visa?
No. Campus France describes it as a five-year short-stay Schengen visa for Indian citizens holding a master's who studied at least one semester in France. It makes future travel to the Schengen area far easier, which has real career value if you work with European markets, but it does not grant any right to live or work in France.
-
Can I stay and work in France after a masters in finance?
The route is the RECE residence card, 12 months and non-renewable under the general rule, requiring the grade de master or a CGE-labelled MSc. Converting to a work permit generally needs a salary of at least 1.5 times the minimum wage, about โฌ30,767 gross annually (Rs.33.76 lakh). Confirm your specific program's eligibility with the school before accepting an offer.
-
How much money do I need to show for a French student visa?
You must justify resources of at least โฌ615 per month (Rs.67,490), which works out to roughly โฌ7,380 (Rs.8.10 lakh) for a twelve-month stay, on top of tuition. Funds should be visible in the account over several months rather than appearing as a single recent deposit, since consulates assess the source and stability of the money.
-
Is Campus France mandatory for Indian students?
Yes. India is an รtudes en France country, so Indian residents must complete the Campus France EEF procedure, including an academic interview, before the French consulate will accept a long-stay visa application. Campus France India does not issue any NOC. You receive an email clearing you to proceed to VFS after the interview.
-
Do I need to know French to study finance in France?
Not for admission to English-taught programs at the leading schools. French becomes relevant later, during internship hunting and at the hiring stage for many corporate finance and client-facing roles in Paris. Starting French at A2 or B1 level before you arrive is a practical advantage rather than an entry requirement.
-
Do I need GMAT or GRE for a masters in finance in France?
Most French schools treat GMAT and GRE as optional or recommended rather than mandatory, and several accept CAT or TAGE-MAGE. A strong quantitative score still helps if your undergraduate degree was not in finance or economics. Confirm the requirement on each program page, because policies differ between schools and between tracks within a school.
-
How much does a masters in finance in France cost for Indian students?
It depends entirely on the route. ESCP's MSc Finance is โฌ31,800 in total (Rs.34.90 lakh) on its published fee schedule. A public university master's carries a differentiated non-EU fee of โฌ3,950 a year (Rs.4.33 lakh) for 2026-27. Add Paris living costs of โฌ1,195 to โฌ1,778 monthly (Rs.1.31 lakh to Rs.1.95 lakh).
-
Which is the best school for a masters in finance in France?
In the Financial Times 2026 pre-experience ranking, ESCP Business School was first worldwide for the fourth consecutive year, followed by Skema at second, ESSEC at fourth and EDHEC at fifth. HEC Paris ranked seventh, down two places, having previously held the top spot for eleven of twelve years. Choose on track fit rather than a two-place difference.
