Not sure which band your course is in? UM classifies programs as arts, business, or science on its course fees page. Law and European Studies sit in the lower band. Nursing, Radiography and ICT sit in the higher one. If you are still comparing countries, read our guide to studying in Malta as an Indian student first.

Counselor insight: Shortlist courses by fee band before you shortlist by ranking. Two three-year degrees at the same university can differ by Rs.7.45 lakh over the program (Rs.34.99 lakh against Rs.27.54 lakh), a gap many students only notice after they have applied.

University of Malta Tuition Fees for International Students: Undergraduate

University of Malta tuition fees for international students at the undergraduate level are quoted per academic year and repeat every year of the course.

  • Arts and business: Rs.9.18 lakh (EUR 8,500) a year. The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) course page shows this figure.
  • Science and health: Rs.11.66 lakh (EUR 10,800) a year. BSc (Hons) Radiography and full-time BSc (Hons) Nursing both show it.

Over a three-year degree, that is Rs.27.54 lakh (EUR 25,500) for arts and business and Rs.34.99 lakh (EUR 32,400) for science and health. Some health degrees run longer, so multiply by your course's duration. If you fail a year and repeat it, the standard annual fee applies again.

What are University of Malta nursing fees?

University of Malta nursing fees for the full-time BSc (Hons) Nursing are Rs.11.66 lakh (EUR 10,800) per year. UM also lists a Preparatory Course for the nursing degree at Rs.11.66 lakh (EUR 10,800) in total. A part-time day version of the nursing degree is listed at Rs.5.83 lakh (EUR 5,400) a year, but it is a separate route with its own entry rules, so check eligibility before you plan around it.

What are University of Malta medicine fees?

University of Malta medicine fees are the highest on the list. The Doctor of Medicine and Surgery costs Rs.28.08 lakh (EUR 26,000) per academic year over a five-year course. That is about Rs.1.40 crore (EUR 130,000) in tuition alone. The Master of Dental Surgery carries the same yearly fee. UM's MD course page also says non-Maltese applicants must present the Medical Maltese Proficiency Certificate, or a pass in the Medical Maltese unit of the medical foundation course, before the course starts.

What does the foundation certificate cost?

UM's Certificate in Foundation Studies in Humanities and in Health Sciences (Nursing) each cost Rs.7.13 lakh (EUR 6,600) in total. The Medical and Dental Sciences foundation costs Rs.17.28 lakh (EUR 16,000) in total, but UM's regulations reserve it for applicants covered by agreements with Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia and for "qualified nationals from other non-EU/EEA countries." Confirm your eligibility with UM before counting on this route.

Counselor insight: Treat the Rs.1.40 crore MD tuition figure as a floor. It excludes living costs, the Maltese-language requirement, and visa funds. Compare it with your education loan ceiling before you apply, not after the offer letter arrives.

University of Malta Tuition Fees for Master’s, MBA, and PhD

University of Malta tuition fees for master's degree programs are charged as a total for the whole program, not as a yearly rate. The total depends on the band.

  • Arts and business taught Master's: Rs.11.66 lakh (EUR 10,800). The full-time MSc Economics page shows the same.
  • Science Master's: Rs.14.47 lakh (EUR 13,400). The MSc Data Science page shows the same.

Part-time courses split the total across years. The part-time evening MSc Data Science lists Rs.7.24 lakh (EUR 6,700) in Year 1, Rs.7.24 lakh in Year 2, and nothing in Year 3. That is a payment schedule, not a discount, because the total is still Rs.14.47 lakh. Research-based courses may also carry bench fees for lab consumables, which UM sets case by case under its bench fees guidelines. Our guide to MS in Malta requirements covers eligibility and course choices.

University of Malta MBA fees

University of Malta MBA fees for the International MBA (part-time, six semesters) total Rs.15.12 lakh (EUR 14,000). UM's schedule is a Rs.1.08 lakh (EUR 1,000) deposit on acceptance, Rs.2.70 lakh (EUR 2,500) in Year 1 Semester 1, and Rs.3.78 lakh (EUR 3,500) in each of the other three semesters. Applicants need at least three years of work experience. The 2026-27 early-bird discount of Rs.2.16 lakh (EUR 2,000) applied only to applications submitted by 30 June 2026, so treat it as history until UM announces terms for 2027-28.

University of Malta PhD fees

University of Malta PhD fees for non-EU/EEA students are Rs.11.88 lakh (EUR 11,000) a year full-time and Rs.5.94 lakh (EUR 5,500) part-time. An approved extension of studies costs Rs.43,200 (EUR 400) a year at Master's level and Rs.64,800 (EUR 600) a year at doctoral level.

Counselor insight: A total fee and a yearly fee look alike on a course page but differ by the number of years. Read the fee line on the exact course page, and ask UM for the invoice schedule at offer stage so your education loan sanction matches the amounts and dates.

University of Malta Application Fees for International Students and 2027-28 Deadlines

How much is the application fee?

University of Malta application fees for international students are Rs.10,800 (EUR 100) for applicants with overseas qualifications, up to the first deadline. Late applications, on courses that accept them, cost Rs.21,600 (EUR 200). UM's fee policy calls the application fee non-refundable and says it cannot be moved to another intake. Changing course after you apply costs Rs.2,700 (EUR 25), Rs.3,780 (EUR 35), or Rs.4,860 (EUR 45), depending on how far into the cycle you are.

What are the 2027-28 deadlines?

UM's academic year starts in October, applications open from the previous November, and a smaller intake runs in February, according to UM's dates and deadlines page. The October 2026 window is closed: the late deadline was 15 September 2026, and non-EU applicants needing a visa had to apply by 1 July 2026. Those are last cycle's dates. The 2027-28 deadline has not yet been announced. Check UM's official admissions page for the latest update. For the MD, overseas-qualification applicants had a 30 January 2026 closing date last cycle, and the 2027 date is also unannounced.

What do you pay after an offer?

After an offer, UM's fee policy asks international students for a Rs.1.08 lakh (EUR 1,000) assurance deposit within 21 days of the acceptance letter. This amount is credited towards your tuition. Payment due dates appear in the acceptance letter, and UM reserves the right to ask international students to settle tuition in their home currency. If you are moving money in euros, see our guide to forex cards for Indian students.

What if something goes wrong?

  • Missed payment: after two reminder emails, UM adds a late payment administration fee of Rs.10,800 (EUR 100).
  • Withdrawal: if you withdraw in writing by the end of the first semester after paying the full annual fee, UM refunds half the annual fee, less an administrative charge.
  • Deposit refund: the policy names only a failed English language test as a refund ground. If your visa is delayed or refused, write to the International Office before the payment date rather than assuming a refund.
  • Failed units: you pay a pro-rata fee by ECTS credit for a failed unit if you still progress. Repeating a whole year means paying the standard annual fee again.

Counselor insight: Application fees are small but unrecoverable, so apply to one well-matched course instead of applying widely and switching later. The deposit confirms your place, so pay it within 21 days.

Is University Free in Malta? EU and Non-EU University of Malta Fees

Indian students pay tuition. UM displays the fee for non-EU/EEA students on every course page, while EU/EEA students see a different fee. The gap is easiest to see at doctoral level: EU/EEA full-time students pay Rs.64,800 (EUR 600) a year against Rs.11.88 lakh (EUR 11,000) for non-EU/EEA students. Since January 2021, UK nationals also pay non-EU fees, with exemptions for some UK residents in Malta. UM's fee regulations treat EU/EEA nationals and a few resident categories as home-fee payers, so a student applying from India should plan on the non-EU/EEA fee. Only UM can confirm an exception in writing.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Malta? Tuition Plus University of Malta Cost of Living

How much it costs to study in Malta depends on housing more than anything else, so add it to University of Malta fees before you decide. UM's living costs page gives this monthly guide, and UM says these are more realistic than the minimum needed for a visa.

Monthly itemINREUR
Shared accommodation (2 or 3 sharing)Rs.59,400 to Rs.75,600EUR 550 to 700
Single residence or apartmentRs.86,400 to Rs.1,72,800EUR 800 to 1,600
Food and beverages (without eating out)Rs.48,600EUR 450
Mobile and Wi-FiRs.3,240EUR 30
LaundryRs.8,640 to Rs.10,800EUR 80 to 100
Electricity and water (basic)Rs.5,400EUR 50
Other (toiletries, stationery)Rs.21,600 to Rs.32,400EUR 200 to 300
Public transportFree for e-residence permit holdersFree

With a shared flat, University of Malta cost of living comes to about Rs.1.47 to 1.76 lakh a month (EUR 1,360 to 1,630), or Rs.17.63 to 21.12 lakh (EUR 16,320 to 19,560) over 12 months. For a deeper city-by-city breakdown, read our guide to the cost of living in Malta.

How much money do you need to show for the visa?

UM's visa page says your bank statement must show at least 75% of Malta's national minimum wage for every month of study. The alternative is EUR 18 (Rs.1,944) per day of stay if accommodation is paid, or EUR 26 (Rs.2,808) per day if it is not. The balance excludes tuition. For a 365-day stay, that works out to Rs.7.10 lakh (EUR 6,570) or Rs.10.25 lakh (EUR 9,490). UM asks for transactions over at least the last three months. Identitร 's student requirements also list health insurance with coverage of at least EUR 30,000 (Rs.32.40 lakh). Our Malta study visa guide covers the full document list.

First-year budget examples

CourseTuition (INR)12 months living (INR)First-year total (INR)
Arts or business degree (EUR 8,500)Rs.9.18 lakhRs.17.63 to 21.12 lakhRs.26.81 to 30.30 lakh
Science or nursing degree (EUR 10,800)Rs.11.66 lakhRs.17.63 to 21.12 lakhRs.29.29 to 32.79 lakh
Science Master's (EUR 13,400 program total)Rs.14.47 lakhRs.17.63 to 21.12 lakhRs.32.10 to 35.60 lakh
MD (EUR 26,000)Rs.28.08 lakhRs.17.63 to 21.12 lakhRs.45.71 to 49.20 lakh

The Master's row uses the full program fee plus 12 months of living costs. A three-semester Master's needs about 18 months of living costs, so add roughly half a year more. Flights, insurance premiums, and one-time move-in costs are extra.

Counselor insight: Visa funds are a minimum, and UM itself calls its living-cost table more realistic. Plan your budget on the UM table and show funds above the visa minimum, so a shared-flat plan that falls through does not break your visa maths.

How to Fund University of Malta Fees as an Indian Student

Are there University of Malta scholarships for international students?

Scholarships are the first thing students ask about when University of Malta fees look high, so here is what UM actually lists. University of Malta scholarships for international students exist, but none is open to Indians right now. UM's scholarships page lists schemes for Tunisian nationals, Palestinian nationals, and Islands and Small States Institute scholarships. The last one is limited to nationals of eligible small island developing states, so Indian citizens do not qualify. UM notes that Government of Malta scholarships are announced periodically. The India-specific foundation scholarships were an offer for 2017/18, so treat them as historical.

What are the realistic options?

Counselor insight: Since no UM scholarship is open to Indians, build the loan and family-funds plan first and treat any award as a bonus. Ask the lender whether the sanction covers the deposit and the first-semester payment, because both fall due before you fly.

3 Takeaways on University of Malta Fees

  1. Pick your fee band first, because University of Malta fees change sharply by course: whether UM classifies your course as arts, business, or science decides most of your tuition bill, and Master's fees are a program total, not a yearly rate.
  2. Budget for tuition plus monthly living costs, not tuition alone, and show visa funds above the minimum, since UM calls its own living-cost table the more realistic guide.
  3. Confirm 2027-28 fees and deadlines on your exact course page before you pay, and apply to one well-matched course, as application fees cannot be refunded.

Frequently Asked Questions About University of Malta Fees

  • Is university free in Malta, or do University of Malta fees apply to Indian students?

Indian students pay tuition. UM charges non-EU/EEA students the fee printed on each course page, from Rs.9.18 lakh (EUR 8,500) a year for arts and business degrees to Rs.28.08 lakh (EUR 26,000) for medicine. Low or no tuition applies to EU/EEA students, not to Indian citizens studying on a visa.

  • What are University of Malta fees per semester?

UM quotes undergraduate fees per academic year, so University of Malta tuition fees per semester have no fixed rate. Halving gives a rough Rs.4.59 lakh (EUR 4,250) for arts degrees and Rs.5.83 lakh (EUR 5,400) for science, but your acceptance letter sets the actual due dates. The International MBA publishes semester amounts of Rs.2.70 lakh (EUR 2,500) or Rs.3.78 lakh (EUR 3,500).

  • Are the University of Malta application fees for international students included in the University of Malta fees?

Application fees are separate from tuition. Applicants with overseas qualifications pay Rs.10,800 (EUR 100) until the first deadline and Rs.21,600 (EUR 200) for late applications on courses that accept them. The fee is non-refundable and cannot move to another intake, so choose your course before you apply. Changing course after applying costs Rs.2,700 to Rs.4,860 (EUR 25 to 45).

  • What are University of Malta fees for medicine (MD) for Indian students?

The Doctor of Medicine and Surgery costs Rs.28.08 lakh (EUR 26,000) per academic year for non-EU/EEA students, about Rs.1.40 crore (EUR 130,000) over five years, before living costs. Overseas-qualification applicants had a 30 January 2026 deadline last cycle, and the 2027 date is not announced. Non-Maltese applicants also need the Medical Maltese Proficiency Certificate or an equivalent Maltese pass.

  • Are University of Malta fees for master's degrees charged per year or as a total?

UM lists Master's tuition as a program total. Arts and business courses such as MSc Economics show Rs.11.66 lakh (EUR 10,800), and science courses such as MSc Data Science show Rs.14.47 lakh (EUR 13,400). Part-time courses split the total across years, for example, Rs.7.24 lakh (EUR 6,700) in each of the first two years.

  • Can scholarships reduce University of Malta fees for Indian students?

UM's scholarship page currently lists schemes for Tunisian nationals, Palestinian nationals, and small island developing states, so none is open to Indians right now. The India-specific foundation scholarships ran in 2017/18. Check UM's scholarships page each application cycle, and plan an education loan or family funding as your base case.

  • What are University of Malta fees for PhD students from India?

Non-EU/EEA doctoral students pay Rs.11.88 lakh (EUR 11,000) a year full-time or Rs.5.94 lakh (EUR 5,500) part-time. EU/EEA full-time students pay Rs.64,800 (EUR 600). Bench fees for research consumables are extra and set case by case, and an approved extension costs Rs.64,800 (EUR 600) a year at the doctoral level.

  • Can I pay University of Malta fees in installments?

UM's fee policy allows home students on per-semester fees to pay by semester. However, it does not offer the same option to international students. Your acceptance letter states the deposit deadline and payment due dates, and some courses, such as the International MBA, publish semester amounts. Email UM's International Office before the due date if you need a schedule.

  • How much does it cost to study in Malta, including University of Malta fees and living costs?

Plan on roughly Rs.26.81 to 30.30 lakh for the first year of an arts or business degree and Rs.29.29 to 32.79 lakh for a science degree, using UM's shared-accommodation living costs. That is tuition plus about Rs.1.47 to 1.76 lakh a month for 12 months, before flights and insurance.

  • Is there a University of Malta application fee waiver, or are University of Malta fees ever exempted?

UM's published fee policy calls the application fee non-refundable, and its fees page lists no waiver for overseas applicants. The only waiver form UM publishes covers course fees, and full or partial exemption from university fees is granted only by Malta's Ministry for Education and Sports. Budget Rs.10,800 (EUR 100), and email the International Office if you think you qualify.
