What Is the LMU Munich Acceptance Rate?

LMU Munich has never published an institution-wide acceptance rate, for international students or anyone else, under its English name or the German original, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Every “10%” or “10 to 15%” figure circulating online is unsourced, not an LMU statistic.

LMU’s admission system isn’t built around a percentage-based acceptance rate the way UK or US universities are. Most programs have no competitive pool at all. Where a program does limit seats, it uses a grade-cutoff system called Numerus Clausus (NC), not an offer rate. Whether your program is NC-restricted or NC-free matters more than any acceptance percentage would.

That’s exactly why treating any flat percentage as an LMU-specific acceptance rate is misleading: your real odds depend on your program, not a university-wide average that gets more competitive every year by sheer volume.

How Numerus Clausus Decides LMU Munich Admission

This is the real mechanism behind LMU admissions, even though LMU itself never calls it an acceptance rate. Numerus Clausus (NC) is a grade-based admission limit that applies only to specific restricted programs, recalculated fresh every semester from that semester’s actual applicant pool.

How it works: each NC program sets a minimum grade equivalent on Germany’s 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (lowest passing) scale. Seats go to applicants ranked above that cutoff until places run out. The published NC is simply the grade of the last admitted applicant that cycle, so it moves every semester. LMU doesn’t publish what share of applicants that cutoff actually admits, only the grade itself, which is a different thing from a percentage-based acceptance rate.

Roughly 70% of LMU’s degree programs have no NC at all. For these, every applicant who holds a recognised university entrance qualification and meets the language requirement is admitted.

Counselor Insight: Students almost always ask “what’s my chance at LMU” without naming a program, and that question has no single answer. A physics or informatics applicant who clears the language and degree bar is close to a guaranteed seat. A psychology or medicine applicant is competing for a cutoff near the top of the German scale. LMU Munich Acceptance Rate for Master’s Programs

LMU doesn’t publish an acceptance rate for any Master’s program either. Master’s admission runs on a different logic from Bachelor’s NC: most programs set specific academic and language prerequisites, and you’re assessed against those directly rather than ranked against other applicants for a fixed quota.

What decides your odds in practice:

• Whether your Bachelor’s degree is recognised as equivalent, checked before anything else.
• Program-specific prerequisites. Most Master’s require a minimum of 65% or 2.5 on the German scale; NC-adjacent programs can expect significantly higher conversions depending on that cycle’s demand.
• Your German or English proficiency, depending on the language of instruction.
• For Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business/Management Bachelor’s graduates specifically: the new dMAT requirement, covered below.

The New 70% Rule: LMU Munich Admission Requirements for Bachelor’s Applicants

This is separate from the LMU Munich acceptance rate question entirely. It’s a Germany-wide eligibility floor, not an admission-odds calculation. 

Direct admission to a German Bachelor’s program straight after Indian Class 12 has never been available, regardless of marks, since 12 years of Indian schooling isn’t treated as equivalent to the 13-year German Abitur. What changed on 15 March 2026, when the Anabin database updated its criteria for Indian qualifications: both existing pathways to a German Bachelor’s now require a minimum of 70% overall in Class 12, effective from Winter Semester 2026/27 onward.

This 70% floor is specific to the Bachelor’s pathway and doesn’t affect Master’s applicants at all, so if you already hold an Indian Bachelor’s degree, your Class 12 percentage is no longer relevant to your German application.

Counselor Insight: We’re seeing a lot of confusion from families who assume a high Class 12 score means direct entry is now open. It isn’t. The 70% is a floor you need to clear before either existing pathway is even available to you, not a new direct-entry route on its own.

dMAT and APS Requirements for LMU Munich Admission

Every Indian applicant to a German university, LMU Munich included, needs an APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) before applying. It verifies your academic credentials are genuine and costs Rs.18,000, non-refundable; apply 4 to 6 months before your target deadline, since processing can stretch longer during peak season.

Like the LMU Munich acceptance rate itself, neither APS nor the dMAT comes with a published pass rate. Both are eligibility gates you clear, not competitive rankings you beat. 

What’s new for Master’s applicants from 2027: Indian applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business/Management, applying for a Master’s program starting Summer Semester 2027 or later, must also complete the Digital Master Test (dMAT) as part of their APS documentation.

• The dMAT is administered by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung), the same nonprofit organisation behind TestDaF and TestAS, not by APS India itself.
• Test fee: EUR 150 (approx. Rs.16,020), paid directly to g.a.s.t.
• Computer-based, single-choice, in English. A high score doesn’t guarantee admission; a low score doesn’t trigger automatic rejection.
• Bachelor’s and PhD applicants are exempt entirely, as are Humanities, Arts, Medicine, Law, and most fields outside the four named above.
• Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants are not affected.

Counselor Insight: The most common mistake right now is assuming the dMAT applies to every Indian Master’s applicant. It only applies to specific undergraduate fields and specific intakes. Confirming your exemption status early saves weeks you’d otherwise lose scrambling to register close to a test date.

Which LMU Scenario Fits You?

• Final-year BTech student graduating May 2027, targeting MSc Informatics or Data Science: your program has no NC, so timing is the real bottleneck, not competition. Start your APS certificate in February to March using your provisional degree certificate, then apply via MoveIN.
• 60% average targeting Psychology or an NC Business track: you’re competing on a cutoff, not just eligibility, and a 60% average likely converts below recent cutoffs for these programs. Build a backup shortlist of non-NC alternatives, such as Sociology or Media Informatics, where your profile clears the bar outright.
• Fully English-medium Bachelor’s background, no German: you can apply to LMU’s English-taught Master’s programs using a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate instead of a German test, provided your target program carries no German-language requirement. • Missed the 15 July deadline: your realistic next option is the Summer Semester intake (around 15 January), though only a limited set of programs open for summer, and most quantitative Master’s are winter-only.
• APS delayed during peak season (October to January, or May to July): processing can stretch to 8 to 10 weeks instead of the usual 3 to 4. Apply well outside these windows where possible.
• Rejected from an NC program: check whether a non-NC program in a related field is still open. A weak SOP, not the NC cutoff itself, is a common and fixable reason for university-level rejection.
• dMAT-eligible but missed registration: you cannot apply to a dMAT-mandated program for that intake without it. Check g.a.s.t.’s registration calendar before ruling out a re-application for the next cycle.
