Student Life in UAE for Indian Students: Costs, Culture, and What to Actually Expect in 2026

11 min read

Quick Read

  • Monthly living costs range from Rs.50,974 (Sharjah, budget) to Rs.1,48,356 (Dubai, mid-range).
  • Social adjustment is easier due to India’s large UAE expatriate community.
  • No automatic post-study work visa; you need a job offer to stay.
  • MEA apostille for Indian documents takes 10-20 working days; start early.

Student Life in UAE: Social Life, Culture, and Daily Adjustments

This is the most important aspect, as no research can prepare you for daily student life in UAE. Before you get there, it’s helpful to know what to expect socially.

Islamic law guides how the UAE works. Even though Dubai and Abu Dhabi are very global, everyone has to follow certain rules. During the daylight hours of Ramadan, no one, even non-Muslims, is allowed to eat, drink, or smoke in public. People don’t like it when people show affection in public. In malls and government buildings, people are expected to dress modestly. These are not just hypothetical rules; people actually follow them.

According to the official statistics portal of the UAE Government, more Indians are living in the country than any other expat group. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, you can really find Indian grocery stores, temples, gurudwaras, and cultural groups from the area. The trouble with food that many students have in Germany or Canada isn’t really a problem here.

Campus life is busy. Most universities in the UAE have sports facilities, student groups, and cultural events that happen every year. Being close to India (a three-hour flight from Mumbai or Delhi with only a 1.5-hour IST time difference) makes student life in the UAE less lonely than in Western countries.

Ramadan is the hardest adjustment, especially for first-time students who arrive in September. For a month, university exam times change, cafeteria hours change, and city life moves at a much slower pace. This helps students learn faster if they know it ahead of time.

Counselor insight: Dubai is engineered for spending. A dinner out in JBR, a weekend brunch in Business Bay, or tickets to a concert at the Coca-Cola Arena, none of these are student prices. Indian students who don't set a tight weekly social budget consistently overshoot in their first semester. Decide your monthly social ceiling before you arrive, not after your first credit card statement.

Student Life in UAE vs Other Countries: Costs, Visa, and Career Trade-Offs

When compared to other popular study destinations, student life in UAE presents a unique set of challenges. The UAE costs 30–40% less than the UK per year, but offers no automatic post-study work visa; that is the central trade-off the comparison table below maps out.

Student Life in UAE: Admission Requirements for Indian Students

For Indian students, the first step to student life in the UAE is to meet the right academic and language standards.

Most universities in the UAE will accept Class 12 board results as proof of high school graduation. Most subjects require 70–75%, but engineering and science programs need 80%. A CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 (about 60-65% overall) is the minimum requirement for postgraduate admissions. Some programs at ranked schools need a score of 3.3 or higher.

English Language Requirements

TestMinimum Score RangeNotes
IELTS Academic6.0 – 6.5 overallThe most widely accepted test; some undergraduate programs may accept 5.5, while PG often requires 6.5+.
TOEFL iBT79 – 80Accepted at almost all UAE universities; federal universities (like UAEU) may accept scores as low as 70 for certain tracks.
Duolingo (DET)100 – 110Increasingly accepted at private and branch campuses (e.g., Amity, Rochester Institute of Technology, AUD).
PTE Academic50 – 58A popular computer-based alternative accepted by most international branch campuses.
EmSAT English1100 – 1400The UAE's national standardized test; primarily required for UAE nationals but accepted for all applicants at federal universities.

Some universities may let Indian students from English-medium CBSE or state board schools skip the proficiency test. Check the details with the admissions office directly.

Counselor insight: Getting an apostille from the MEA for Indian documents can take anywhere from 10 to 20 business days, depending on your state. Start as soon as you get a conditional offer, not after you get the final offer. This one delay is the main reason why Indian students miss their deadlines for enrollment.

UAE Student Visa Process for Indian Students

The UAE has a different way of getting student visas than most other countries. Your university pays for your student residence visa. You don't start the process on your own.

The university's student services office will start the application process for you as soon as you receive your unconditional offer and pay the first deposit.

Process Step-by-Step

  • Get an unconditional offer letter from a university in the UAE.
  • Pay an enrollment deposit of around Rs.50,720 to Rs. 1,26,800, which is about $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Send the university certified copies of your passport, photos, and a medical certificate from an Indian doctor on the UAE-approved panel.
  • The UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) is how the university gets your entry permit.
  • Get an email with an entry permit. It takes 7–14 business days to process.
  • Get an entry permit to go to the UAE.
  • Full medical checkup in the UAE, including Emirates ID biometrics, blood test, and chest X-ray.
  • Get an ID from the UAE Emirates and a residence visa that is good for the length of your study program.

From accepting an offer to getting a visa, the whole process takes 4 to 8 weeks. Make this part of your plans.

Counselor insight: If you already have a visit visa for the UAE when the entry permit comes, use the entry permit instead of the old visit visa to get in. Getting into the country on a visit visa slows down the process of getting your Emirates ID and causes problems with your student residency record.

With its low cost of living, Sharjah is the best city for students. It borders Dubai, and a lot of Sharjah students go to Dubai to work and hang out with their friends. The commute takes more time, but it saves a lot on housing costs.

Student Life in UAE: Part-Time Work and Career Options

If you are a student in the UAE, you can't work as much as you can in Canada or the UK.

Off-campus part-time work is legal in the UAE with two documents: a No Objection Certificate from your university (issued after semester 1 at most institutions) and an MOHRE Part-Time Work Permit, which your employer applies for on your behalf. Processing takes 3–7 working days. The permit costs AED 600, paid by the employer. See the LeapScholar guide to part-time jobs in Dubai for the full process.

Jobs on campus, like lab assistant, library assistant, and student ambassador, usually pay between AED 20 and 35 an hour, which is Rs. 507 to Rs. 889 an hour. These are ways to make money, not ways to pay for things like rent or tuition.

In Dubai, salaries for college graduates in IT and finance start at AED 6,000 to AED 12,000 per month, which is Rs. 1,52,160 to Rs. 3,04,320 per month. There is no income tax on these salaries. There is a real chance to make money, but living there is tied to having a job.

You can't stay past the end of your student visa if you don't have a job offer that turns it into an employment visa. In the UAE, there is no automatic work visa after studying, like there is in the UK's Graduate Route or Canada's PGWP.

If a student wants to get a UAE Golden Visa after graduation, they must have a minimum CGPA of 3.5 or higher from a recognized UAE institution. It is a 10-year visa that can be renewed after graduation, not while you are still in school.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong

  • Your IELTS score is 5.5: MAHE Dubai and Amity Dubai accept conditional admission at 5.5 with a mandatory pre-sessional English course, which costs Rs. 1,27,000–Rs. 2,54,000 (AED 5,000–10,000) for 4–8 weeks. Computer-based IELTS results arrive in 13 days, so a retake before the September intake is still viable if you start in July.
  • Class 12 marksheets are delayed due to a hold-up in the board results. Get in touch with the admissions office right away with your test roll number and a temporary certificate from the head of your school. If you ask in writing, most universities in the UAE will give you an extra two to four weeks.
  • UAE entry permit denied because of a problem with a medical report: Most rejections are based on TB screening. A confirmed case has to go through treatment for 6 months before they can apply again. Usually, more reports can clear up an unclear result. The office of student services at the university will show you how to file an appeal.
  • Didn't apply by the September deadline: Check to see if the program you are keen to join starts in January. Not all of them do, especially in science and engineering. Before assuming that a delayed start is possible, make sure.

Student Life in UAE: 3 Things That Determine Whether It’s Right for You

  • First, getting used to people in the UAE is easier than in most places, but there are real rules about Ramadan, how to behave in public, and Dubai's pricey nightlife. Get to know them before you get there.
  • Second, the UAE does not give students an automatic work visa when they finish school. If you want to live there permanently, you should start by looking at Canada, Australia, or Germany. If you really want to start a career in the Gulf, the UAE is the best place to go.
  • Third, start the MEA apostille process as soon as you get your conditional offer. This procedure is the main reason Indian students miss their deadline to enroll in the UAE: it takes 3 to 6 weeks.
