Iceland’s official study portal, Study in Iceland, lists seven universities. Since 1 July 2026, Hรณlar University operates as the University of Iceland at Hรณlar within a new University of Iceland consortium, so there are effectively six independent institutions for you to choose from. So if you’re wondering whether there is a university in Iceland that works for Indian students, the answer is yes, and there are several. This is the full Iceland university list, with the details that matter to an Indian applicant.

Two things are especially important for anyone shortlisting the top universities in Iceland. First, in the top universities in Iceland QS ranking for 2027, only the University of Iceland makes the overall table. Second, the "free university in Iceland" idea no longer holds for Indian students starting in autumn 2027, as the next section explains.
See what our counselors say on European universities and admissions.
Is University Free in Iceland? The Autumn 2027 Tuition Change
Until now, the public universities that are among the top universities in Iceland charged international students only an annual registration fee. That changes for your intake.
The University of Iceland's fees page confirms that the government has authorized universities to charge tuition to students from outside the EEA/EFTA and Switzerland from the autumn 2027 semester. Here is what that means for you:
- Who pays: Indian citizens starting a bachelor's or master's program in autumn 2027 or later.
- Who doesn't: Students who started in autumn 2026 or earlier, PhD students, and holders of an Icelandic permanent residence permit.
- How much: The University of Iceland lists the per-ECTS tuition fee as "to be determined." Fees may also vary by program.
- What stays: The registration fee of Rs.80,000 (ISK 100,000) per year and the one-time non-EEA processing fee of Rs.16,000 (ISK 20,000).
The Iceland University of the Arts has already moved. It charges non-EEA students starting from fall 2026 between Rs.36 lakh (ISK 4,500,000) and Rs.44 lakh (ISK 5,500,000) per year, depending on the department.
Counselor insight: Don't build your 2027-28 budget for the top universities in Iceland on "zero tuition." Until the University of Iceland announces its fee, plan a backup budget that could absorb a Reykjavik University-level fee of about Rs.14 to 20 lakh a year. If the final number is lower, the gap becomes your buffer. Students who want the lowest-fee route in Europe should also compare free study in Europe options before locking in Iceland.

Architecture applicants can read our guide to MArch in Iceland for program details.
6. Bifrรถst University
Bifrรถst now runs as an online university, and its main teaching language is Icelandic, with only selected courses in English. If your goal is to live and study in Iceland on a degree program, Bifrรถst is not a practical fit.
Cheapest Universities in Iceland for International Students
If cost is your first filter, here is how the cheapest universities in Iceland for international students compare with the other top universities in Iceland on fees confirmed today.
| University | Confirmed non-EU cost (per year) | 2027-28 status |
| University of Iceland | Rs.80,000 (ISK 100,000) registration | Tuition authorized, amount not set |
| University of Akureyri | Registration fee | Public university tuition change may apply |
| Agricultural University of Iceland | Registration fee | Public university tuition change may apply |
| Reykjavik University | Rs.14.4 to 20.7 lakh (ISK 1,794,000 to 2,584,000) | Published each year |
| Iceland University of the Arts | Rs.36 to 44 lakh (ISK 4,500,000 to 5,500,000) | Already charging non-EEA tuition |
The cheapest university in Iceland today is the University of Iceland, but only until its non-EEA tuition is announced. The top public universities in Iceland for international students (University of Iceland, Akureyri, and the Agricultural University) are likely to stay cheaper than the private options, though that can't be confirmed until fees are published. For wider low-cost comparisons, see our list of countries with free education for Indian students.
Top Engineering and Computer Science Universities in Iceland
Among the top universities in Iceland, two cover almost all engineering demand from Indian applicants:
- University of Iceland: Its School of Engineering and Natural Sciences is the country's broadest engineering faculty and is strongest in earth sciences and environmental engineering.
- Reykjavik University: Its Departments of Engineering and Computer Science charge non-EU master's students Rs.16.8 lakh (ISK 2,104,000) per year. The Iceland School of Energy, at Rs.19.9 lakh (ISK 2,492,000) per year, suits students aiming for geothermal and renewable energy careers.
If you are comparing the top engineering universities in Iceland, the choice usually comes down to the University of Iceland's research depth versus Reykjavik University's industry-linked, applied teaching.
How to Study in Iceland: Admission Requirements and 2027-28 Deadlines
There is no central admissions system in Iceland, so you apply directly to each of the top universities in Iceland on your shortlist. Most international deadlines fall between February and April.
| University | Non-EU deadline | English requirement |
| University of Iceland | 1 February (window opens mid-December) | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 / PTE 58 (7.0 for some programs) |
| Reykjavik University | 31 January (autumn intake only) | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 91 |
| University of Akureyri | 1 March (Polar Law), 1 April (others) | IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, or PTE |
| University Centre of the Westfjords | 15 February (first round) | Check the program page |
| Agricultural University of Iceland | Check the program page |
These are the universities' standing published deadlines. Confirm the exact 2027 dates on each application portal when it opens for the 2027-28 cycle.
Documents you will typically need:
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates (Class 12 marksheet for bachelor's)
- An English test score that the university can verify online (see our IELTS score guide by country)
- A statement of purpose (use our SOP for Masters format)
- Letters of recommendation and a CV
- A portfolio for arts, design, and architecture programs
- A valid passport
Counselor insight: The University of Iceland does not accept a medium-of-instruction letter as proof of English. The only exemption is for prior study in a majority English-speaking country, and India is not on that list. Book your IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE by November so your score is ready well before the 1 February deadline.
Iceland Student Residence Permit: Funds, Fees, and Timeline
Whichever of the top universities in Iceland you choose, Indian students do not apply for a separate "student visa." You apply for a student residence permit from the Directorate of Immigration, and your entry visa follows once the permit is approved.
| Requirement | What you need (2026 rules) |
| Processing fee | Rs.56,000 (ISK 70,000), non-refundable |
| Proof of funds | Rs.2.08 lakh (ISK 259,951) per month, so about Rs.25 lakh (ISK 3,119,412) for a one-year permit |
| Health insurance | Valid in Iceland for at least 3 months, minimum cover Rs.16 lakh (ISK 2,000,000) |
| Study load | Full-time, which means 30 ECTS per semester |
| Age | 18 or older |
| Application timing | Submit with complete documents before 1 June for processing before the autumn semester |
Work rights while studying: Since the 2026 update, permit holders can work up to 60% of full-time without a separate work permit. You can work more during scheduled breaks between terms.
After graduation: Graduates of Icelandic bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs can apply for a residence permit for job-seeking, which bridges the gap to a skilled-work permit.
Counselor insight: The Directorate requires the funds to be the student's own. Parent or third-party sponsorship does not count, and neither does cash, property, or fixed assets. Move the full amount into your bank account early so the statement shows a stable balance when you apply. If you plan to fund your education through a loan, read whether a 100% education loan is possible, and confirm with the Directorate how a sanctioned loan is assessed.
First-Year Budget in INR: University of Iceland vs Reykjavik University
This table compares the two most popular top universities in Iceland for Indian students, using confirmed 2026 figures. It excludes flights, the insurance premium, and the University of Iceland's 2027 tuition, which has not been announced yet.
| Cost item | University of Iceland | Reykjavik University (UG) | Reykjavik University (CS/Engineering master's) |
| Tuition | TBD from autumn 2027 | Rs.14.4 lakh (ISK 1,794,000) | Rs.16.8 lakh (ISK 2,104,000) |
| Registration / application fees | Rs.96,000 (ISK 120,000) | Rs.12,800 (ISK 16,000) | Rs.12,800 (ISK 16,000) |
| Residence permit fee | Rs.56,000 (ISK 70,000) | Rs.56,000 (ISK 70,000) | Rs.56,000 (ISK 70,000) |
| Living funds (permit minimum) | Rs.25 lakh (ISK 3,119,412) | Rs.25 lakh (ISK 3,119,412) | Rs.25 lakh (ISK 3,119,412) |
| Total (before flights and insurance) | Rs.26.5 lakh + tuition | Rs.40 lakh | Rs.42.5 lakh |
The permit minimum is the floor, not a comfortable budget. Rent in Reykjavรญk is the largest monthly cost, so read our full breakdown of the cost of living in Iceland before you finalize your plan.
Is Iceland Right for You? A Quick Decision Framework
The top universities in Iceland suit you if:
- You want a research master's in earth sciences, energy, environment, or marine or polar studies, where Icelandic universities have genuine depth.
- You are comfortable with a limited job market and a small international student community.
- You can show about Rs.25 lakh in your name for the permit.
Look at other Nordic options if you want:
- You want a wide choice of English-taught bachelor's programs. Most Icelandic undergraduate courses are taught in Icelandic, so you should consider other Nordic options.
- You need a large tech or corporate job market after graduation.
- You want fee certainty for 2027-28 before applying.
Common Mistakes Indian Applicants Make with Top Universities in Iceland
- Planning a spring intake: Non-EEA applicants rarely get a spring start at the University of Iceland, because permit applications must be in by 1 November.
- Missing the permit window: Applications filed after 1 June, or filed with missing documents, are not guaranteed a decision before classes begin.
- Showing parents' funds: Third-party support is not accepted for the student permit.
- Relying on an MOI letter: The University of Iceland does not accept it as proof of English.
- Choosing Bifrรถst for a campus experience: It is an online university with mostly Icelandic teaching.
- Assuming "free tuition" for 2027: The rules changed for non-EEA students starting in autumn 2027.
3 Takeaways on Top Universities in Iceland
- Pick from the top universities in Iceland by program strength, not ranking alone: Only one Icelandic university is QS-ranked. For niche fields such as polar law, restoration ecology, or geothermal energy, a smaller university can be the better academic fit.
- Treat 2027-28 as a transition year: Keep one fee-certain option (such as Reykjavik University) alongside a public university on your shortlist, so an unexpected tuition announcement doesn't derail your plans.
- Work backwards from the permit, not the offer letter: The funds rule, English test, and 1 June permit window all need action months before any university deadline, so start them in parallel.

Frequently Asked Questions About Top Universities in Iceland
-
What is the top university in Iceland?
The University of Iceland is the top university in Iceland. It is the only Icelandic university in the overall QS World University Rankings 2027, where it is placed at #=537. It is also the country's oldest and largest university, and it offers the widest range of English-taught master's programs.
-
How many universities are there in Iceland?
Iceland's official study portal lists seven universities. Since 1 July 2026, Hรณlar University has operated as the University of Iceland at Hรณlar within the University of Iceland consortium. That leaves six independent institutions, one of which (Bifrรถst) now teaches mainly online.
-
Is Iceland good for Indian students?
Iceland works well if you want a research master's in earth sciences, energy, environment, or polar studies. The trade-offs are high living costs, a small job market, and mostly Icelandic-taught bachelor's degrees. It suits focused postgraduate students more than undergraduates.
-
Does Iceland need IELTS?
You need an English test, but it doesn't have to be IELTS. The University of Iceland accepts IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 79, or PTE 58, and Reykjavik University asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 91. A medium-of-instruction letter from an Indian college won't count at the University of Iceland.
-
Is Iceland cheap to study?
Iceland is one of Europe's pricier options once you add living costs. The residence permit alone asks you to show about Rs.25 lakh (ISK 3,119,412) a year, and public universities may start charging non-EEA tuition from autumn 2027. Reykjavik University already charges Rs.14.4 lakh or more a year.
-
Is it easy to get PR in Iceland?
It takes time. Student years alone won't get you there: You need at least four years of legal residence, with at least two of them on a PR-eligible permit, such as one for work requiring expert knowledge. You also can't spend more than 90 days abroad in any permit year.
-
Is it hard to get into the University of Iceland?
The university doesn't publish an acceptance rate, so competition varies by program. What usually causes problems for Indian applicants is the paperwork: a closely related bachelor's degree, an English score the university can verify online, and every document submitted by 1 February.
-
Which is the cheapest university in Iceland?
Right now it's the University of Iceland, which charges a Rs.80,000 (ISK 100,000) yearly registration fee instead of tuition. That could change, because its tuition for non-EEA students starting in autumn 2027 hasn't been announced yet.
