On July 17, 2026, DHS finalized a rule ending "Duration of Status" for F-1 student visas. Here is what will change, effective September 15, 2026:

• F-1 students will get a fixed admission period of up to four years, not indefinite status tied to your program length.
• The post-study grace period drops from 60 days to 30 days after your program ends.
• If your OPT or STEM OPT work authorization runs longer than your fixed admission period, you will need to separately file an extension of stay with USCIS, not just rely on your approved OPT.
• STEM OPT itself has not been eliminated, and the 180-day automatic extension for a timely filed STEM OPT application is unaffected.
• The I-765 filing fee, used for both OPT and STEM OPT applications, has gone up to $1,780.
• Graduate students face tighter rules than undergrads on switching programs or schools. Undergrads can't switch majors or transfer schools during their first year, but after that they have some flexibility, unless SEVP grants an earlier exception. For MS students, that flexibility isn't there. You can't change your program, major, or school at any point during your degree, except in rare cases where SEVP approves an exception for genuine extenuating circumstances.
