MBBS is the primary reason Indian students head to Russia, followed by engineering and computer science. The table below covers the most common programs with fee ranges in INR.

The Preparatory Faculty is a one-year foundation program in Russian language, mathematics, and core sciences, available after Class 12. It is the entry route for students who need Russian language preparation before starting a degree program. It does not substitute for Class 12 qualifications. For MBBS specifically, NMC India requires Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology plus a valid NEET score, a preparatory year alone does not qualify you for MBBS in Russia. For non-medical programs, check degree equivalence with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) before enrolling through any non-standard pathway.

Requirements differ by level and institution. The documents checklist is where most families underestimate the time needed for preparation, especially the MEA Apostille step, which takes 7-15 working days per batch of documents.

Medical programs in Moscow carry the highest fees. Regional universities offer the same WHO-recognised MBBS degree at a considerably lower tuition fee.

Students who choose Kazan or Novosibirsk over Moscow save Rs.20,000-25,000 per month on living costs without compromising academic quality.

Four scholarship options are open to Indian students for the 2027 intake.

My insight: Most students miss the Russian Government Scholarship window because they find out in February when the December deadline has already closed. Applications through the Russian House in New Delhi open around October 2026. If you are planning for 2027, October is when to start, not after board results arrive.

Two routes are open: the Russian Government Scholarship through Rossotrudnichestvo or a direct application to the university. Both lead to the same admission letter, which then unlocks the visa process.

Step 1: Decide your route

Go through Rossotrudnichestvo if applying for the scholarship (deadline approximately December 2026), or directly through your chosen university's admissions portal.

Step 2: Build your shortlist.

For MBBS, only shortlist universities whose MBBS programme meets the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 criteria: at least 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at the same university, taught in English, and leading to a licence to practise in Russia. For other programs, cross-check your field against QS 2027 rankings and faculty reputation.

Step 3: Get your documents ready.

Use the checklist in the Admission Requirements section. Start the MEA Apostille process right away. It takes 7-15 working days per batch and will not move faster regardless of urgency.

Step 4: Submit your application.

Submit your application through Rossotrudnichestvo if you are a scholarship applicant, or through the university's online portal if you are a direct applicant.

Step 5: Wait for your admission letter.

Most universities send these between March and May for Fall 2027. This letter is what your visa application depends on.

Step 6: Book your consulate appointment early.

Slots at Russian consulates in India fill fast between May and July. Do not wait until your letter arrives to start looking.

My insight: The visa appointment is where students consistently lose time they cannot afford to lose. Book your consulate slot the day your admission letter arrives, not the week after. Between May and July, available slots disappear within days.

September is where most Indian students start. Practically every MBBS program and the majority of engineering degrees take new students only in the Fall. Spring intake in February exists, but program options are considerably narrower.

If you are a NEET-qualified student who did not secure a government MBBS seat in India:

MBBS in Russia for Indian students is a direct and cost-effective alternative. Tuition at regional medical universities starts at RUB 2,50,000 (Rs.2.80 lakh) per year, far below Indian private MBBS management quota costs of Rs.50 lakh to Rs.1.5 crore over five years. Graduates must clear Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to practise in India.

If you are a Class 12 student from a STEM background looking for an affordable international engineering degree:

Bauman MSTU and Kazan Federal University both carry QS rankings, and their engineering programmes run at Rs.1.90-5.60 lakh a year. Russian industry in aerospace and energy specifically values these degrees, which is worth knowing if a career that includes time in Russia after graduation is something you are open to.

If you are interested in international relations, diplomacy, or economics:

MGIMO in Moscow is one of the few universities anywhere that trains diplomats specifically. Students from over 100 countries attend it. If international relations is your actual career plan and not just a general interest, it is worth considering.

Russia does not have a dedicated post-study work visa in the way that the UK or Australia do. Graduates who want to stay and work in Russia can do so if a Russian employer sponsors a work permit. There is no automatic right to remain after graduation.
