Four Ways to Study Abroad Without IELTS

Most plans to study abroad without IELTS follow one of these routes. Our IELTS guide covers the test itself if you decide to take it.

  1. English-medium waiver. Your degree was taught and assessed in English, and your university confirms it in a letter. Heriot-Watt and Bath both describe this route for Indian postgraduate applicants.
  2. An alternative test. Universities publish their own accepted lists, and the lists differ. A test that works at one university can be refused at another.
  3. Your school marks. UWA accepts English results from CBSE and CISCE Class XII, at the minimum grades the university sets.
  4. A pre-sessional or bridging course. Bath and UWA both offer English courses for applicants who miss direct entry.

My insight: A waiver is a university decision, not a right. Ask for it in writing before you drop IELTS from your plan, and check each university's rule, because the years and conditions differ.

Top 10 Countries to Study Abroad Without IELTS: University and Visa Position

Countries to study without IELTS differ in two layers. Here is the position for ten destinations, according to official pages.

CountryUniversity positionVisa position
USAEach school sets its own English standard. The US government doesn't regulate how well a student must speak English. Schools set the standard.
UKHeriot-Watt, Bath, Swansea, and Suffolk describe their medium of instruction routes.Degree level or above: the university can assess your English. Below degree level: a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider.
CanadaWindsor and Saskatchewan list graduate exemptions for English-taught degrees.IRCC ended the Student Direct Stream, which required a designated test, in November 2024. The study permit itself has no mandatory test, and the college sets its standard.
AustraliaUWA accepts CBSE and CISCE English results and English-taught degrees. The Home Affairs list of approved tests applies. Offshore applicants must also meet it.
IrelandCheck each college.Duolingo is on the visa list, with minimums of 55 and 75.
New ZealandCheck each university.English ability isn't a student visa requirement. Show the evidence your course asks for.
GermanyLMU accepts a Duolingo score of 100 for one master's. Pforzheim Business School does not accept Duolingo. The German missions in India ask for proof of English or German, not older than a year, unless your admission letter confirms the university checked it. TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge are listed.
ItalyFlorence accepts Duolingo scores above 105. Perugia does not accept Duolingo scores or a medium of instruction letter. The Embassy of Italy in New Delhi asks for B2 English proof if the course is taught in English, preferably IELTS or TOEFL.
NetherlandsThe University of Amsterdam's humanities school and Twente publish closed lists of accepted tests.Your university, as an IND-recognised sponsor, files your permit and sets any language test.
JapanTsukuba's MBA waives the test for degrees taught entirely in English, with proof.Your university applies for your Certificate of Eligibility. It sets any language proof.

Note: A waiver at admission doesn't remove tests later. Canada's PGWP requires an approved language test (CLB 7 for university graduates, CLB 5 for college graduates). Australia's Temporary Graduate visa also asks for English evidence, so check Home Affairs. Budget a test, not just an exemption.

Best Country to Study Abroad Without IELTS for You

The best country to study abroad without IELTS is the one where your university rule and the visa rule both work for your profile. Here is how that looks for three students.

  • If you hold an English-medium degree and are aiming at the UK or Canada, the waiver route fits. Heriot-Watt, Bath, Windsor, and Saskatchewan all describe conditions.

Keep a strong statement of purpose ready, and read our SOP for masters guide.

  • If you want Australia, a university waiver won't cover the visa. Plan for a test from the Home Affairs approved list.
  • If you prefer Ireland, look at the visa list first. Duolingo has published minimums there, 55 and 75.

Universities With a Verified No-IELTS Route

Long lists of universities for study abroad without IELTS go out of date fast, so we list only routes stated on university pages.

UniversityWho may skip a test?Condition
Heriot-Watt University, UKIndian postgraduate applicantsYou must have met Heriot-Watt's Class XII English requirement of 68% from any recognized Indian study board within the last 10 years. Your undergraduate degree must also have been taught and assessed in English at a recognized Indian university within the last 5 years. A medium of instruction letter is required unless your transcript or degree certificate states it. If your degree is older than 5 years, or you met the Class XII criteria more than 10 years ago, IELTS or an equivalent is required.
University of Bath, UKIndian nationals for postgraduate taught coursesAt least 12 months of degree-level study at an institution in India where English was the medium of instruction, with the degree awarded no more than 5 years before your intended start date. You need an official document from your awarding university confirming this (transcript, degree certificate, academic reference or ENIC statement). Bath also says that if you submit an English test result that falls short of the course requirement, it can't fall back on your Class XII result and medium of instruction evidence.
Swansea University, UKIndian bachelor's graduatesA medium of instruction letter, issued within 10 years of the course start, from institutions on its list.
University of Windsor, CanadaIndian graduate applicantsA three-year bachelor's plus a master's, or a four-year bachelor's such as B.Tech or B.Arch, in line with its exemption list.
University of Saskatchewan, CanadaGraduate applicantsAt least three consecutive years of study exclusively in English, at an institution listed in WHED as English-only.
University of Western AustraliaCoursework applicantsCBSE or CISCE English results at the set grades, or a degree taught and examined in English outside Australia.

Don't submit a weak test score "just in case". At Bath, a test result that misses the course requirement can cost you the waiver you would otherwise have had. Ask the admissions team first if you've already sat a test.

My insight: The time frame varies by university, ranging from 2 to 10 years. Check the date on your degree certificate against each rule before you shortlist.

MBA in Abroad Without IELTS and PhD in Abroad Without IELTS

To study abroad without IELTS isn't limited to a master's, though business schools and research programs set their own rules.

  • MBA abroad without IELTS: the University of Tsukuba's MBA in International Business waives the English test if your degree was conducted entirely in English, with proof. Michigan State's Broad College Full-Time MBA offers a waiver for English-medium schooling, with an interview and a GMAT writing score of at least 4.0. Both pages may be dated, so confirm the current rule.
  • PhD abroad without IELTS: research degrees follow graduate rules. The University of Suffolk accepts a medium of instruction letter for some postgraduate research applicants. Windsor and Saskatchewan apply graduate exemptions.
  • Check the program: many MBA and PhD programs still require a test, so check the specific page.

Alternative Tests to IELTS

Even if you study abroad without IELTS, you may still need a test, and the options for studying without IELTS vary by destination.

TestWhat we verified?
Duolingo English TestOn Ireland's visa list, the Duolingo English Test scores are 55 and 75. LMU accepts 100 for one master's. Florence accepts above 105. Pforzheim Business School and Perugia don't take it. Not on Australia's student visa list.
PTE AcademicOn Australia's approved list. On Ireland's list at 30.
TOEFL iBTOn Australia's approved list. On Ireland's list at 47 and 61.
Cambridge C1 Advanced, CELPIP General, OETOn Australia's approved list.
LANGUAGECERT Academic and Michigan English Test (MET)On Australia's approved list, added on 7 August 2025, for tests taken at a test centre. LANGUAGECERT Academic Online and MET Digital taken at home are not accepted.

Check each university's list too, because a visa-approved test can still be refused for admission, and vice versa.

Documents and Timeline

These documents support any plan to study abroad without IELTS.

DocumentWhat the official pages say
Medium of instruction letterAn official document from your awarding university, such as a letter, transcript, or degree certificate that states the medium.
Degree certificate and transcriptsMust fall inside the university's time window, from 2 to 10 years.
Class XII English resultUWA and Heriot-Watt set minimum grades for it, and Bath's page refers to it alongside your medium of instruction evidence. Check each university's required mark before you assume you qualify.
Test score, if you need oneYou only need to provide a test score if the university or the visa office asks for it.
Sources: GOV.UK

My insight: Ask the university and the visa rule in the same email. Australia's visa list and the UK's rules below degree level can still require a test even after a waiver.

If Your IELTS Waiver Is Refused

If you plan to study abroad without IELTS and the waiver is refused, you still have options.

  • Take a test the university accepts. Check its own list before you book anything.
  • Ask about a pre-sessional course. Bath and UWA both offer English preparation.
  • Try a university with a clearer rule. Compare the conditions in the table above.
  • For Australia, book a test from the Home Affairs approved list for the visa.

Three Rules for Studying Abroad Without IELTS

  1. Check the university waiver and the visa rule together, because they are separate.
  2. Ask for the waiver in writing before you drop IELTS.
  3. Keep your medium of instruction letter and the dates ready.

Study Abroad Without IELTS: Your Questions Answered

  • Can I study abroad without IELTS?

Yes, you can study at universities that waive IELTS or accept other proof of English. To study abroad without IELTS, an English-medium degree with an official letter is the most common route. Each university decides, so check its page.

  • Can I use my Class XII English marks instead of IELTS?

Sometimes, at some universities. The University of Western Australia accepts CBSE English at a minimum grade of B2, or CISCE English at 60%. The University of the West of Scotland, London, accepts 70% or higher in Class XII English in place of IELTS. These are university rules, so check your programme's page and level before relying on your marks.

  • Can I join a UK foundation or pathway course without IELTS?

Not through an English waiver. For courses below degree level, GOV.UK says you must prove your B1 English with a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider. Degree-level courses work differently, as the university can assess your English itself. Check which level your course sits at.

  • Which country is best for study without IELTS?

No country exempts everyone. The best fit is a country where both your university's waiver and the visa rules work for you, such as the UK or Canada with an English-medium degree.

The UK and Canada publish clear waiver routes at the university level. Ireland has a published Duolingo visa minimum. Australia needs an approved visa test.

  • Can I get a student visa without IELTS?

It depends on the country. Ireland lists Duolingo, New Zealand doesn't require English ability for the visa, and Australia needs an approved test.

  • Which tests can replace IELTS?

Duolingo, PTE, and TOEFL are accepted at many universities as alternatives to IELTS, while Cambridge C1 Advanced, CELPIP General, and OET are on Australia's visa list. Each university sets its list.

  • Does an English-medium degree waive IELTS?

At many universities, yes, an official letter is required, and the degree must be from within a time window of 2 to 10 years. Some universities, like Perugia, don't accept it.

  • Is an MBA abroad without IELTS possible?

At some schools. Tsukuba's MBA and Michigan State's Broad College offer waivers. Confirm the current rule on the page, as many MBA programs still require a test.

  • Is a PhD abroad without IELTS possible?

Occasionally. Suffolk, Windsor, and Saskatchewan describe graduate or research waivers. Check the program page, as many PhD programs still require a score.

  • What if my university refuses a waiver?

Take a test it accepts, ask about a pre-sessional course, or apply to a university with a clearer rule. Australia's visa needs an approved test either way.
