A graph is shown below. It represents the average CO2 emissions per person among four European countries; Italy, Sweden, Portugal, and the United Kingdom over four decades, from 1967 to 2007.

Average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person, 1967-2007

The chart demonstrates the difference in the amount of CO2 emitted by individuals in 4 different countries over 40 years. It can be noted from the graph that there were dramatic changes in the readings and after four decades, the rankings of the countries were not the same as the original.

There was a steady decline in the emissions of carbon dioxide in the UK over the 40-year period. But, it was still the biggest per-capita emitter of carbon dioxide for the given forty years. But, individually, the per-capita carbon dioxide emission went down in the UK and Sweden throughout a forty-year period, but there was an increase in Italy and Portugal. So, the countries showed the opposite trend in pairs.

In the beginning, the emissions of Co2 in Portugal were approximately 1.2 metric tonnes per person. There was a rise in this measurement every decade. Portugal even witnessed a drop in carbon dioxide emissions in 1987. But at the end of the given period, the value had reached almost five times the original value.

Similarly, in Italy, a person’s average carbon dioxide emissions were about 4.2 metric tonnes, and they continued to increase till the year 1977, for a decade. From 1977 to 1987, there was a small decline in the amount of CO2 emissions but then ultimately rose higher to 7.8 metric tonnes at the end of the period.

In 1967, Sweden emitted around 8.3 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per person. The country hit its peak in 1977 at around 10.2 metric tonnes of CO2. The figure then decreased and reached almost half its peak value at around 5 metric tonnes and remained steady after 1977. The UK, in the beginning, had per-capita CO2 emissions of about 11 metric tonnes. It then gradually showed a downward trend when the figure reached its lowest point, less than 9 metric tonnes in 2007, the final year.
