Here is what Semmelweis itself has published:

• Intake size: in 2024-25, about 1,200 international students were admitted to the English and German programs, from 119 countries.
• Trend: in 2025/26, the university said its international first-year intake grew again, but it didn't give an exact number.
• The rector's view: the rector has called Semmelweis the hardest Hungarian university to get into, with the highest admission scores and the lowest acceptance rate. He was speaking about Hungarian admissions in general, not specifically the English-language intake.

Admission to medicine, dentistry, and pharmaceutical sciences depends on an entrance exam in two stages.

The written score isn't the whole decision. The admission committee looks at:

• your school transcripts,
• your written test and interview performance,
• motivation, communication, spoken English and personality,
• the university's goals for geographical and cultural diversity and gender balance.

You don't need a separate English certificate such as IELTS. Semmelweis expects upper-intermediate English and tests it through the written papers and the interview.

If you already have a relevant BSc taught in English, you can ask to be exempted from the exam. Exemptions are decided case by case and aren't automatic. Read the admission rules for the full criteria.

• No-shows count: if you register for an exam and don't turn up, it counts as a failed attempt, not a withdrawal.

Material fees:

• Dentistry: Rs. 1,19,363 (USD 1,250) per semester in year 2, and Rs. 2,38,725 (USD 2,500) per semester in years 3 to 5.
• Pharmaceutical Sciences: Rs. 38,196 (USD 400) per semester in year 2, and Rs. 76,392 (USD 800) per semester in years 3 to 5.

Currency note: the 2026/27 admission rules listed medicine and dentistry at USD 10,450 per semester. The rules also say tuition can change and may differ between intakes.

• You fail your first exam. Book your second attempt at least a week later, before the end of June.

• You think the process was unfair. You can appeal within 15 days, but only on procedural grounds.
• You can't start in 2027 after accepting. You can ask for a one-year deferral. It isn't guaranteed, and there's no appeal if it's refused.
• You're rejected for 2027. Reapply the following year, and apply to other universities in parallel.
• Your visa is delayed after enrolment. Visa problems can qualify for a pro rata tuition refund.
