New Zealand universities run on a calendar year academic cycle rather than India’s July to June system, so there is no single “2026-27” session. The two main intakes are

• Semester 1, 2027 (classes begin February 2027): Most universities close applications for international students between October and December 2026, so this semester is the intake currently open for Indian applicants.
• Semester 2, 2027 (classes begin July 2027): applications generally close between March and April 2027.

Put together, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in New Zealand costs an Indian student roughly INR 19 to 30 lakh a year, and this is before any scholarship. Auckland and Wellington sit at the higher end of the living cost range, while cities like Hamilton, Christchurch, and Dunedin run noticeably cheaper on rent and groceries.

The flagship scholarship for Indian applicants is the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA), funded by the New Zealand government specifically for Indian students. In its most recent confirmed cycle, the program offered a total pool of NZD 260,000 (about INR 1.38 crore) split across 29 scholarships, with individual awards ranging from NZD 5,000 to NZD 20,000 (roughly INR 2.65 lakh to INR 10.6 lakh) for undergraduate and postgraduate study. To qualify, applicants must be Indian citizens living in India, at least 18 years old, and hold an unconditional offer from a New Zealand university.

Each university also runs its own award, typically a tuition fee reduction of 10 to 25 percent for applicants with a strong academic record, separate from the NZEA. Indian postgraduate applicants can also check eligibility for the New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship, which covers tuition, a weekly living allowance, and airfare, subject to current-year availability. To apply for a New Zealand student visa, Indian students need:

• An unconditional offer of place from a New Zealand university.
• Proof of funds of NZD 20,000 (about INR 10.6 lakh) per year of study, or NZD 1,667 a month for shorter courses.
• Evidence that tuition fees for at least the first year are paid or guaranteed.
• A valid passport, passport-size photographs, and academic transcripts.
• An IELTS or equivalent English test score meeting the university’s entry requirement (most set at 6.0 to 6.5 overall).
• A medical examination and police clearance certificate for stays over 12 months.
• Return airfare or sufficient funds to cover it.

The Fee Paying Student Visa starts at NZD 850 (about INR 45,050), and 80 percent of applications are processed within seven weeks, though the process can take longer during peak intake months. Apply at least three months before your intended start date to allow for processing delays.

Monthly living costs vary significantly by city. A student in Auckland or Wellington should budget NZD 1,400 to 1,800 a month (INR 74,200 to 95,400), while Hamilton, Dunedin, or Palmerston North typically runs NZD 1,000 to 1,300 a month (INR 53,000 to 68,900). International students on a valid student visa can work up to 25 hours a week</mark> during term time and full time during scheduled breaks. This 25-hour limit applies automatically to student visas granted from 3 November 2025 onward; students holding an older 20-hour visa need to apply for a variation of conditions with Immigration New Zealand to get the higher limit. For post-study options, the main pathway remains the Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV): graduates who complete a Master’s or PhD in New Zealand, studying full time for at least 30 weeks, qualify for a 3 year PSWV with no restriction on employer or occupation. For qualifications below Master’s level, the visa length is generally tied to the length of study completed, as stated in the offer of place.

From 16 November 2026, eligibility has expanded: graduates holding a Level 7 Graduate Diploma who completed full time in New Zealand, who also hold a bachelor’s degree (from New Zealand or elsewhere, earned at any time) will be able to qualify for a PSWV of up to 1 year. Separately, a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will give up to 6 months of open work rights to graduates of NZQF level 5 to 7 qualifications (minimum 24 weeks full time study) who do not otherwise qualify for a PSWV, requiring at least NZD 5,000 in funds, applied for within three months of the student visa expiring, granted only once, with no dependants sponsorship allowed.
