What Is the University of Sydney Acceptance Rate? Why No Official Figure Exists
The University of Sydney acceptance rate for international applicants is not published by the university, and no Australian government dataset covers it. Any single percentage you see online is an estimate.

The Department of Education's Undergraduate applications and offers 2025 covers domestic first-semester undergraduate applicants only. It states that it contains no information on international students or postgraduate study. Nationally, 85% of those domestic applicants received an offer, so that figure says nothing about Indian applicants.
Why do estimates differ?
Websites quote a University of Sydney acceptance rate of roughly 25% to 35%, usually with no stated method. They mix offer rates with enrollment rates and domestic with international data. Because no official source exists, none of those numbers can be checked.
What limits international places in 2027?
The government gave the University of Sydney an allocation of 11,900 new overseas student commencements for 2027, per its allocation table. That is the same level as 2026. The government says this planning level is not a cap. Student visa applications for a provider are processed as high priority until it reaches 80% of its allocation, according to Study Australia.
Counselor insight: Students often look for one percentage to decide whether to apply. A better test is whether your marks clear your course's published score with room to spare, because that is what Sydney actually publishes.
University of Sydney Entry Requirements by Course for CBSE and ISC Students
Sydney publishes an indicative entry score for each undergraduate course and each Indian qualification. The table below comes from its 2027 International Admission Guide. IELTS shows the overall score, with the minimum band in brackets.
| Course | IELTS | CBSE aggregate | ISC best-four average | HSSC best-five average (6 states) | Indicative 2027 Year 1 fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B Arts | 6.5 (6.0) | 12.5 | 81 | 75 | Rs.36,63,048 (AUD 55,100) |
| B Science | 6.5 (6.0) | 14 | 84 | 85 | Rs.42,28,128 (AUD 63,600) |
| B Science (Advanced) | 6.5 (6.0) | 17 | 90 | 95 | Rs.42,28,128 (AUD 63,600) |
| B Psychology | 6.5 (6.0) | 14 | 84 | 85 | Rs.42,28,128 (AUD 63,600) |
| B Engineering Honours (most streams) | 6.5 (6.0) | 15.5 | 87 | 85 | Rs.42,28,128 (AUD 63,600) |
| B Advanced Computing | 6.5 (6.0) | 17 | 90 | 95 | Rs.42,28,128 (AUD 63,600) |
| B Economics | 7.0 (6.0) | 15.5 | 87 | 85 | Rs.39,28,968 (AUD 59,100) |
| B Commerce | 7.0 (6.0) | 19 | 94 | 95 | Rs.39,28,968 (AUD 59,100) |
| B Design in Architecture | 7.0 (6.0) | 17 | 90 | 95 | Rs.36,63,048 (AUD 55,100) |
| B Biomedicine and Health | 7.0 (7.0) | 17 | 90 | 95 | Rs.46,00,416 (AUD 69,200) |
| B Applied Science (Physiotherapy) | 7.0 (7.0) | 19.5 | 95 | 95 | Rs.46,00,416 (AUD 69,200) |
Across the full guide, ISC scores run from 77 for visual arts to 99 for the combined medicine degrees. The HSSC column applies to Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Other states need higher scores.
These scores are guides only. Sydney states that they will not necessarily result in an offer, and you must also meet prerequisites and English requirements. Prerequisites refer to subjects in the NSW Higher School Certificate curriculum, so check each course page.
Counselor insight: The gap between courses is large. A student with an ISC average of 88 clears economics but not commerce, so compare courses before choosing a first preference.
How Sydney Converts Indian Grades: CBSE Aggregate, ISC and HSSC
Sydney does not use your CBSE percentage. It adds up grade values, using the method in its admission guide.
CBSE: Choose English or Hindi, then your best four remaining externally examined subjects. Add the five grade values:
| Grade | Value |
|---|---|
| A1 | 4 |
| A2 | 3.5 |
| B1 | 3 |
| B2 | 2.5 |
| C1 | 2 |
| C2 | 1.5 |
| D1 | 1 |
| D2 | 0.5 |
If you have five A1 results and your average numerical mark is 96 or higher, the aggregate is deemed 21.
Worked example: Grades of A1, A1, A2, A2 and B1 give 4 + 4 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 3 = 18. That clears Science (Advanced) at 17 and Engineering Honours at 15.5, but not Commerce at 19.
ISC: The score is the average of your best four subjects, including English.
HSSC: The score is the average of your best five academic subjects, for the six states listed above.
Counselor insight: Many students convert their own marks using a chart from a forum. Use Sydney's grade values instead, because the table above is built on them.
University of Sydney Postgraduate Entry and Indian Grade Conversion for Masters
Sydney does not publish a percentage or CGPA table for Indian bachelor's degrees. I could not find one on any official page. Sydney states elsewhere that grading systems vary between countries and that the university assesses and determines the equivalent requirements, per its page on unlisted qualifications.
Many Masters courses are described as needing a credit average, often 65%, but I could not confirm this on a Sydney course page. Check the entry requirements on your exact course page, and ask Sydney through its regional experts how your degree is assessed.
Postgraduate coursework applications from international students for Semester 1 2027 close on 18 December 2026. Some courses, such as medicine and dental medicine, use different dates.
Counselor insight: Students often apply with a guessed percentage from a blog. Ask Sydney how your degree is assessed before you apply, and keep the reply with your documents.
English Language Requirement for the University of Sydney
Sydney's standard requirement is IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, but some faculties and courses differ. In the table above, Commerce and Economics need 7.0 overall, and Biomedicine and Health needs 7.0 with no band below 7.0. The rules below come from Sydney's English language page.
| Test | Rule |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Online version not accepted; One skill retake is assessed with the main test |
| TOEFL iBT | Only the Australia version on the 0 to 120 scale; Home Edition not accepted |
| PTE Academic | Accepted |
| All tests | Must be no more than two years old at course start |
For TOEFL and PTE scores, use Sydney's concordance table. Indian study is not on Sydney's list of recognised English-speaking countries, and the page does not state that CBSE or ISC English-medium study replaces a test.
Counselor insight: Book your test early, since Sydney requires a score that is still valid at course start. A test taken more than two years before commencement will not count.
University of Sydney Fees in INR for 2027
The fees in the course table are indicative Year 1 tuition for 2027, per 1.0 EFTSL. Sydney notes they are subject to annual increases, so budget for rises in later years. Postgraduate fees, living costs and the student visa fee are not included here.
Exchange rate used: Rs.66.48 per AUD 1. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.
Counselor insight: Families often compare only Year 1 fees. Ask what the total for the whole degree will be, since Sydney increases fees annually.
University of Sydney Intakes, Deadlines, and Documents for 2027-28
Most international students apply directly to Sydney. If you are studying an Australian Year 12 or an IB Diploma in Australia, you apply through UAC instead. The dates below come from Sydney's application dates page.

|---|---|---|
| International undergraduate | 1 December 2026 | 29 May 2027 |

Counselor insight: The undergraduate deadline falls in early December, while Class 12 board results arrive later. Check your course page for how final results are handled, and do not wait for them to start your application.

Which Sydney Course Fits You? Decision Scenarios for Indian Students
If you are a CBSE Class 12 student with grades A1, A1, A2, A2 and B1 in your counted subjects, your aggregate is 18. You clear Engineering Honours (15.5) and Science (Advanced) (17), but not Commerce (19).
If you are an ISC student with an 88 best-four average, you clear economics (87) but fall short of commerce (94). Compare the two before applying.
If you are a final-year BTech student applying for a Masters, Sydney assesses your grades itself. Check the course page and ask Sydney how your degree is assessed, then apply by 18 December 2026 for Semester 1.
What If Your Sydney Application Falls Short?
- Missed 1 December 2026: Applications can close early or on the date listed, and Sydney does not state a late rule on the dates page. Contact the university, or aim for the 29 May 2027 deadline.
- Scores below the guide: Compare a lower-scored course, such as Arts at ISC 81 or Science at 84.
- English score short: Retake the test, and check whether your course sets a higher level.
- Results delayed: Ask Sydney how your course handles pending results before the deadline.
- Visa concerns: Student visas depend on Home Affairs requirements, so keep your documents consistent. The government's planning level may change visa processing speed.
