Japan Scholarships for Indian Students 2027: MEXT, JASSO, and Complete Application Guide
Japan has set a target of 5,000 Indian students studying in Japan by 2026, nearly triple the current figure of approximately 1,700. The push is backed by expanded MEXT scholarships, over 800 English-medium master's programs, and a semiconductor and AI industry that is creating real employment pipelines for engineering graduates.
Japan's interest in Indian students is structural. The TSMC Kumamoto fab and the Rapidus 2nm plant in Hokkaido together represent the largest domestic semiconductor investment in Japan's history. As the US tightens H-1B, the UK reduces its Graduate Route, and Australia raises student visa fees, Japan is moving in the opposite direction: more funding, more English programs, and more employer access.
Currency note: 1 JPY = Rs. 0.5851 as of July 10, 2026 (BookMyForex live rate). Always verify current rates before financial planning.

English-Medium Programs in Japan
Over 800 English-medium master's programs are currently available. The strongest concentrations are in the following:
- Engineering and computer science: University of Tokyo (UTokyo, QS #28 globally in 2027), Osaka University (QS #83), Kyushu University (QS #228), Tohoku University (QS #108)
- Business: Hitotsubashi ICS, Waseda, Ritsumeikan APU
- Policy: GRIPS (entirely English-medium)
Most programs do not require Japanese for admission, but JLPT N2 significantly broadens employment access with Japanese companies after graduation.
Cost of living: Monthly living costs in Japan range from JPY 80,000 to JPY 120,000 (approximately Rs. 46,808 to Rs. 70,212) depending on the city. Tokyo is the most expensive; cities like Fukuoka, Sendai, and Sapporo are 20 to 30% cheaper and host strong national universities. National university tuition is approximately JPY 535,800 per year (approximately Rs. 3.13 lakh), one of the lowest among globally ranked university systems.
Post-Study Work and Salaries
Japan offers a one-year post-study job-search visa after graduation, extendable while you find a qualifying role. High-scoring graduates can apply for the Highly Skilled Professional Visa, which grants permanent residency in as little as 1 to 3 years. Japanese university graduates receive bonus points under this system, giving them a meaningful advantage over candidates who studied abroad elsewhere. Starting salaries for engineering graduates:
- General engineering: JPY 3 million to JPY 6 million/year (approximately Rs. 17.55 lakh to Rs. 35.11 lakh).
- Semiconductor sector: JPY 5 million to JPY 8 million/year (approximately Rs. 29.26 lakh to Rs. 46.81 lakh) for mid-level roles.

Your 2027 Action Plan
- July to September 2026: Research English-medium master's programs in your field. Identify 2 to 3 professors using researchmap.jp. Check target universities' QS 2027 ranks; UTokyo (#28), Kyoto (#49), Osaka (#83), and Tohoku (#108) are all in the global top 150.
- August to October 2026: Email target professors with a focused 1- to 2-page research proposal. Read their recent publications on Google Scholar first and reference specific papers in your email; generic emails are almost never answered. A positive response unlocks the university recommendation route.
- October to December 2026: The university recommendation window opens. Submit your complete application through the university.
- March to May 2027: Embassy Recommendation window opens and closes. Written exam and interview follow in June and July 2027.
