Appalachian State University is a public university located in the state of North Carolina in the United States. The university was founded in 1899 as the Watauga College by B.B. and D.D.Dougherty with Lillie Shull Dougherty. Established as a teachers college, its steady growth as an educational institute resulted in its eventual renaming in 1967 after achieving university status. Now part of the University of North Carolina institutions, its various faculties offer over 150 undergraduate degrees, 70 graduate degrees and 2 doctoral programs.

The campus of the university covers an area of 1,300 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, North Carolina. It is one of the highest university campuses in the eastern parts of the country.
