The university was founded in 1899 as the Watauga College by B.B. and D.D.Dougherty with Lillie Shull Dougherty. Established as a teachers college, its steady growth as an educational institute resulted in its eventual renaming in 1967 after achieving university status. Now part of the University of North Carolina institutions, its various faculties offer over 150 undergraduate degrees, 70 graduate degrees and 2 doctoral programs.

Welcome to Appalachian State University's on-campus housing! University Housing is delighted to have you as a resident, and they aim to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Students who live on campus have easy access to university amenities such as classrooms, faculty offices, restaurants, recreation facilities, and the library. Many of the things students might have to set up and pay for individually when they live off campus are already included, such as wired and wireless internet access, heat, water, and recycling.
Having all of these services close by allows students to focus on their studies and socialising on campus. Because students are already on campus, it is easier to attend events and join clubs and groups.

I have never had to worry about being bored or having any down time. From the very first day of classes until I graduate, I am constantly challenged by academic material.

ASU is an amazing school with a ton of resources. The campus is beautiful and the people are extremely friendly. It's very close to my house and I am able to go home on the weekends! It's been one of the best decisions I've made in regards to my college career.
