University of Bremen Scholarships in 2026: Two Deadlines Indian Students Should Not Miss
The University of Bremen is not the first German university Indian students think of. While IIT-partnership programs at TU Munich and RWTH Aachen attract most of the Indian applicant traffic, Bremen offers tuition-free education, a globally ranked research environment, and two scholarship deadlines arriving in the next six weeks.
Currency note: 1 EUR = Rs. 110.06 as of June 17, 2026 (Citigroup India FX rates). Always verify current rates before financial planning.
Why Bremen Deserves a Place on Your List
The University of Bremen is a public research university founded in 1971 in northwestern Germany. It is mid-sized, internationally oriented, and significantly less competitive to get into than TU Munich or RWTH Aachen, while also offering comparable research infrastructure.
Key facts:
- QS World University Ranking 2026: #530 globally.
- THE World University Rankings 2026: #301–350 globally.
- Students: approximately 20,000 students, with a strong international student community.
- Tuition: zero at most programs. International students pay only a semester contribution of approximately EUR 400 per semester (Rs. 44,024), which covers public transport in Bremen.
- Language: 23 master's programs taught in English, 36 in German.
- Strong research areas: Marine Biology and Environmental Science (ISATEC program), Space Engineering, Computer Science, Social Sciences, and Engineering.
Two advantages Indian students rarely factor in:
Industry access: Bremen is home to Airbus's largest European production facility, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI, one of the world's largest AI research institutes), and Fraunhofer Institute branches in manufacturing and materials. Engineering and computer science students are studying next door to active employers in aerospace, AI, and logistics.
Cost of living: Monthly living costs in Bremen run approximately EUR 700 to EUR 950 (Rs. 77,042 to Rs. 1,04,557). Compare that to EUR 1,100 to EUR 1,400 in Munich or EUR 1,000 to EUR 1,300 in Frankfurt. Combined with zero tuition, the total annual cost of a master's degree at Bremen can run as low as Rs. 8 to Rs. 12 lakh.
Two Scholarships. Two Deadlines. Both are approaching.

What it covers:
- EUR 300 per month (Rs. 33,018/month) for at least two semesters, extendable based on academic performance.
- It does not cover tuition, since the cost is already zero for most Bremen programs.
- Intended as a living cost supplement.

- You have a strong academic record, social engagement, and a clear personal background statement.

What to prepare:

- Motivation letter addressed to the scholarship committee.
- Two letters of recommendation.
Important note: The 2025/2026 cycle has closed. The 2026/2027 cycle opens July 15, 2026, and closes August 15, 2026. This window applies to both new applicants and continuing holders seeking renewal.

Before You Apply: Three Things Specific to Indian Students
1. Language requirement: Most undergraduate programs at Bremen require German at the C1 level. For Indian students, master's programs are the practical entry point. Twenty-three master's programs at Bremen are fully taught in English. The German language is not required to apply for these.
2. The VPD and Uni-Assist process: For undergraduate programs, Indian students must apply through Uni-Assist to obtain a VPD certificate before applying directly to Bremen. This takes approximately 4 weeks to process. For master's programs, students apply directly to Bremen without Uni-Assist.
3. The 13-year education rule: Germany follows a 13-year school system, while India follows a 12-year system. Indian students applying for bachelor's programs must either complete one year at a recognized Indian university or attend a Studienkolleg in Germany. This requirement does not apply to master's applicants who already hold an Indian bachelor's degree.
