Founded in 1842, the University of Notre Dame is a private Catholic research institute located in Indiana with an acceptance rate of 16%. What are the requirements for participation?


International students must achieve both program-specific and general standards to be considered for admission to the University of Notre Dame. The following are the precise eligibility conditions for each programme level:

Requirements for Undergraduates:

  • Although there is no requirement for a minimum grade point average or class rank, above-average high school achievement boosts the university's chances of selection.
  • Four units of English, three units of Mathematics, two units of foreign languages, two units of science, and two units of history and social science must be completed during high school.
  • The unit distribution may vary depending on the chosen programme of study, as well as the SAT or ACT scores.
  • Participation in extracurricular and community-based activities
  • One letter of recommendation from any subject instructor; a counsellor recommendation is optional but encouraged.
  • Essays are examples of writing supplements.
  • Some creative undergraduate programmes may demand an example of talent.
  • IELTS Academic: A band score of 7.5 or higher is required.
  • A TOEFL iBT score of 100 or above is required.
  • A score of 70 or higher on the Pearson Test of English-Academic (PTE)
  • When candidates score 650 or higher on the SAT's Evidence-Based Reading and Writing exam, and/or an applicant scores 26 or higher on the ACT's English or Reading portions, English proficiency scores can be waived.

Requirements at the graduate level (Master's and Doctoral programmes):

The university's prerequisites for admission to graduate programmes vary depending on the programme. However, the following are the general requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree is required (or equivalent as recognised by University of Notre Dame)
  • On a 4.0 scale, an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.
  • Scores on the GRE General Test and the GRE Subject Test (as per specific programme requirement)
  • Intentional statement
  • A resume, often known as a curriculum vitae, is a document that lists
  • Three recommendation letters
  • IELTS Academic: A band score of 7.0 or higher is required.
  • TOEFL iBT: An overall score of 80 or above on the TOEFL iBT, with a minimum score of 23 in the Speaking portion.

Admission Process

How can I apply for undergraduate courses?


International undergraduate applicants must apply through the Common Application and the Coalition Application after deciding on their preferred undergraduate programme. The steps of the application are listed below:

  • Step 1: Applicants must begin the procedure by compiling information such as academic transcripts, a list of activities, information about their parents or legal guardians, academic awards and achievements, and test scores (SAT, ACT, IELTS, and TOEFL).
  • Step 2: Applicants must register an account on one of the following websites: www.commonapp.org or www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org.
  • Step 3: They must then select the chosen programmes and add University of Notre Dame to their list of universities.
  • Step 4: On the Common Application or Coalition Application, applicants must upload the Notre Dame Writing Supplement.
  • Step 5: They must next submit a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher as well as a counselor's recommendation.
  • Step 6: Applicants must also provide a completed financial certificate and a copy of their passport.
  • Step 7: Applicants must pay the application fees and submit the completed application.

Graduate applicants from outside the United States must apply online at gradconnect.nd.edu/apply/.

Step 1: Applicants must register a new account on gradconnect.nd.edu/apply/ by going to the application page.
Step 2: They must create an account by supplying information such as their email address, name, and birth date.
Step 3: Applicants will receive an email with a temporary PIN.
Step 4: They must then log into the account and create a password.

Step 5: Applicants must select an application type before beginning a new application.

Step 6: After completing the application, applicants must complete the areas below:

  • Application Type and Term, which require applicants to complete the programme for which they have applied.
  • Name, mailing and home addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, date of birth, citizenship information, and language are all examples of personal information.
  • GRE or GMAT scores, as well as statistics on English language proficiency (if needed by the selected department)
  • Academic History, which requires you to declare your whole academic history.
  • Additional Information, including reasons for applying to Notre Dame and any personal information about the candidate
  • Recommendations, which require the email addresses of three referees
  • Uploads, which include a statement of intent, a resume, a writing sample, and a document with supplementary information.
