One of the most crucial choices a medical student will ever have is selecting career objectives, which may include a specialisation. The Suny Downstate College of Medicine Office of Career Advising is committed to assisting its medical students in exploring medical careers throughout their years of study, developing mentorship relationships with faculty, pursuing dual degrees, and navigating the residency application process.

All College of Medicine students have access to the centrally located Office of Career Advising. Each stage of the student's career development is addressed by a four-year schedule of activities developed and managed by the office. Events include peer guidance workshops, speciality educational sessions, and class presentations. The career advising office assigns early career advisers, clinical advisory deans, and departmental speciality advisors. They are in charge of advising students during the Foundation and clinical years, offering assistance with the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), reviewing personal statements, and setting up mock residency interviews during the residency application process.
