Northern Illinois University was established in 1895 by Governor John P. Altgeld with its main campus in Dekalb, Illinois. Operating in multiple locations like Chicago, Naperville, and Rockford, Northern Illinois University has seven extensive colleges dealing in business, education, law, health, human science, engineering and technology, liberal arts and sciences, and visual and performing arts.
The university is ranked 298 in the National Universities Ranking and 703 in the Global Universities category by the US News and World Report 2021. Acclaimed as one of the best business colleges, the university holds 157 in UG Business by the US News and World Report 2021.
NIU holds a special place in research and is accredited by the Carnegie Foundation as a Ru/H high research activity. The main campus of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb is spread across an area of 765 acres. It provides 100+ undergraduate and 80+ graduate programs, minors, certificates, pre-professional studies, integrated program, specialist degree program, doctoral and research programs, and off-campus programs.
There are 42 schools and departments in its seven degree-granting colleges. It is a member of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, and Universities Research Association. It maintains a student-faculty ratio of 13:1 for better performance of the students. NIU offers 300+ student organizations, clubs, and active community services, cultural resources centers, and sports clubs for healthy on-campus student life.
The university offers on-campus residential facilities for students in its six residence halls, namely Gilbert hall, Grant Hall, Neptune hall, Steveson tower, Northern View Community, and Residence hall. The availability of different types of rooms like single room, suite rooms, and double rooms has options for mixed co-ed floors, public workstations, in-hall laundry, Wifi, and others. The estimated cost of attendance for undergraduate students with full-time enrollment ranges between USD 27,000 to USD 35,000.
