  • Northern Illinois University was established in 1895 by Governor John P. Altgeld with its main campus in Dekalb, Illinois. Operating in multiple locations like Chicago, Naperville, and Rockford, Northern Illinois University has seven extensive colleges dealing in business, education, law, health, human science, engineering and technology, liberal arts and sciences, and visual and performing arts.

The main campus of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb is spread across an area of 765 acres. It provides 100+ undergraduate and 80+ graduate programs, minors, certificates, pre-professional studies, integrated program, specialist degree program, doctoral and research programs, and off-campus programs. 
  • There are 42 schools and departments in its seven degree-granting colleges. It is a member of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, and Universities Research Association. NIU offers 300+ student organizations, clubs, and active community services, cultural resources centers, and sports clubs for healthy on-campus student life.

The following are the requirements for international students applying to Northern Illinois University's undergraduate and graduate programmes:

Requirements for Undergraduates

  • Students must have a high school diploma or certificate from a recognised institution.
  • Curriculum in high school:
  • English for four years
  • Mathematics for three years
  • Science for three years
  • Social Studies for three years
  • 2 years of art, music, or a foreign language
  • A 3.0 or higher GPA is necessary.
  • Some programmes may require a SAT or ACT score (an ACT score of 21 or above is required).

English language requirements: Undergraduates from other countries must submit one of the following scores:

  • TOEFL iBT 71 or higher is required.
  • PBT 527 or higher on the TOEFL
  • IELTS Academic 6.0 or higher
  • Grade C in IGCSE/GCSE or GCE O-level
  • English IB 4 or better A standard level test
  • ELS 11 or above
  • DET 105 or higher in Duolingo

Requirements for Graduates

  • Students must have earned a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • On a scale of 4.0, students must have a 2.75 GPA or equivalent.
  • A GMAT or GRE score may be required by some programmes.

International grads must produce one of the following scores to demonstrate their English proficiency:

  • TOEFL score of 80 or above
  • Academic 6.5 or above on the IELTS
  • Academic PTE 53 or above
