Kennesaw State Institution was formed in 1963 by the Georgia Board of Regents utilising local bonds and a federal space grant. It is a public research university. The institution has two main campuses in the Atlanta metropolitan region, one in Kennesaw and the other in Marietta, and is situated in the U.S. state of Georgia. The university provides 52 bachelor's degrees, 21 master's degree programmes, one specialised degree, and five doctoral programmes for 80 undergraduate and graduates degrees. The institution is split into 13 colleges.

Before this, the university was ranked 230 for 2018 and 2019 and 293 for 2020. Over time, the university's rating criteria have slipped. If a first-year student has a GPA of 3.2 or greater and applies to Kennesaw State University for the fall 2022 semester, they may be admitted without an ACT or SAT score. To be eligible for admission, students with a GPA of less than 3.2 should submit valid ACT or SAT results together with their high school transcript.
