Overview

  • Situated in Powys, Wales, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is an educational charity established in the 1970s dedicated to researching climate change. It has had over 1,795 students enrolled in its Graduate School and other courses. Some postgraduate courses include Green Building, Sustainability and Adaptation, Sustainable Food and Natural Resources, and Sustainability and Ecology.
  • The Centre for Alternative Technology campus is situated 3 miles north of Machynlleth. CATäó»s distance learning initiative allows access to its seminars, lectures, tutorials, library resources, and tutors through Canvas or Moodle. Instead of the 18-month full-time program, students can study part-time over three years; 2 years for teaching modules and six months for the final dissertation.
  • The blended learning initiative offers the possibility of pursuing courses online and offline. It offers numerous short courses like Cob Building, Making Frame Baskets, and Eco Refurbishment, held outside. Various webinars and online events are organized to provide valuable tips and explore the different aspects of climate change. Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate programs are available in sustainability and adaptation planning and sustainability and behaviour change disciplines.
  • The estimated MSc tuition fee is GBP 6,890 for domestic and GBP 8,330 for international students, while the March tuition fee is GBP 12,500. Scholarships, bursaries, grants, and loans like the Rose Jessica-Maia Bursary, Vegetarian Award, The Royal Society Grants, and Find-a-Masters Scholarships are some financial aids. Accommodation is provided within the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere; the WISE building offers twin en-suite rooms, while the eco-cabins provide bunkhouse-style accommodation.

  • The Vegetarian Cafe provide food and space to hang out, while the eco-store keeps books, stationery, and other necessities. Becoming a residential 6-month volunteer is an excellent way to help the Gardens or Woodlands and Water teams while living on-site; short volunteer opportunities are also available.

Admission Process

Visas for Students
There are several options for international residents to study with us at CAT. If you would ordinarily need a student visa to study in the UK, you can study our courses via distance learning (excluding MArch Sustainable Architecture) or, if you are eligible, a combination of residential (typically less than 6 months) and distant learning. Check your eligibility on the UK Government website to check if you need a visa to study in the UK.

We presently do not have a Tier 4 licence, which means we are unable to accept students from outside the UK for full-time residential study. From September 2021, new students who were previously classified as EEA students will be classified as Overseas students and will be unable to enrol in full-time residential study at CAT. If eligible, they will be required to study via distance learning or a combination of residential and distance learning as described above.

As a non-native English speaker,
You may be required to submit proof of your English language competency if you speak another language as your first language. A total IELTS score of 6.5 is required, with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component, or other proof of English language proficiency, such as a letter from your employment if English is the company's primary language.

Fees For international students, there is a separate fee system. The UK government modified the fee status for EEA students in 2021, therefore incoming students will be classified as Overseas rather than Home. On our Fees and Funding page, you may learn more about international student fees.

Distance Education
You'll learn with the same lecturers and tutors that teach on the residential study weeks, including CAT's in-house teaching team and a variety of professional visiting and guest lecturers, through our Virtual Learning Environment and MS Teams, alongside a mix of UK and international students.

Modules taken online are usually organised as a series of teaching activities spread out over an eight-week period. Students can plan their days around seminars and group projects, as well as watch recordings of onsite lectures at their leisure or participate in live-streamed lectures if they want.
