  • Situated in Powys, Wales, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is an educational charity established in the 1970s dedicated to researching climate change. It has had over 1,795 students enrolled in its Graduate School and other courses. Some postgraduate courses include Green Building, Sustainability and Adaptation, Sustainable Food and Natural Resources, and Sustainability and Ecology.
  • The Centre for Alternative Technology campus is situated 3 miles north of Machynlleth. CATäó»s distance learning initiative allows access to its seminars, lectures, tutorials, library resources, and tutors through Canvas or Moodle. Instead of the 18-month full-time program, students can study part-time over three years; 2 years for teaching modules and six months for the final dissertation.
  • The blended learning initiative offers the possibility of pursuing courses online and offline. It offers numerous short courses like Cob Building, Making Frame Baskets, and Eco Refurbishment, held outside. Various webinars and online events are organized to provide valuable tips and explore the different aspects of climate change. Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate programs are available in sustainability and adaptation planning and sustainability and behaviour change disciplines.
  • The estimated MSc tuition fee is GBP 6,890 for domestic and GBP 8,330 for international students, while the March tuition fee is GBP 12,500. Scholarships, bursaries, grants, and loans like the Rose Jessica-Maia Bursary, Vegetarian Award, The Royal Society Grants, and Find-a-Masters Scholarships are some financial aids. Accommodation is provided within the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere; the WISE building offers twin en-suite rooms, while the eco-cabins provide bunkhouse-style accommodation.

  • The Vegetarian Cafe provide food and space to hang out, while the eco-store keeps books, stationery, and other necessities. Becoming a residential 6-month volunteer is an excellent way to help the Gardens or Woodlands and Water teams while living on-site; short volunteer opportunities are also available.

The Wales Institute of Sustainable Education (WISE) building, a superbly constructed and award-winning green facility right in the heart of our Visitor Centre, houses CAT's accommodation.

The 24 twin and double en-suite bedrooms have wonderful views of the Snowdonia National Park, and first-floor apartments have access to a common garden terrace, allowing you to fully appreciate being in the Welsh countryside. Solar-thermally heated showers and basins are provided in all bedrooms, which are heated using CAT's on-site biomass facilities.

The support staff are incredibly accommodating and friendly...the professors are always willing to help out with any questions or projects you might have. I lived there as a student for almost three years and felt like it was my second home.
