Founded in 1971, MacEwan University was initially known as Grant MacEwan Community College and a higher education institution. In 1988, this college achieved authorization to extend university programs. Later, in 2009, this college became Alberta's 6th university and was renamed MacEwan University for all public communication and marketing purposes.
