What is the Post Study Work Visa in Ireland and Who Can Apply?
The post study work visa in Ireland is called the Third Level Graduate Programme and gives you an immigration stamp called Stamp 1G. This stamp replaces your current Stamp 2 (student permission) and allows you to stay and work full-time in Ireland without any employer sponsorship for a fixed period of time, depending on your degree level.
Stamp 1G exists specifically for non-EU/EEA graduates who have completed a Level 8, Level 9, or Level 10 qualification from a recognized Irish awarding body. If you studied at Trinity College Dublin, UCD, DCU, TU Dublin, Maynooth University, MTU, UCC, University of Galway, University of Limerick, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, or a QQI-recognized institute, you are on the right track.
One thing students often misunderstand: Stamp 1G is a bridge, not a destination. You can work full-time during this period, but if you want to stay in Ireland beyond it, your employer must sponsor a work permit before your Stamp 1G expires.

Counselor insight: Sometimes students assume that getting Stamp 1G means they are set for 2 years without doing anything else. The 24 months go faster than expected. Employers typically need 4 to 8 weeks to process an employment permit application. Starting your search for a permit-eligible role in the 18th or 19th month of your Stamp 1G is a risky move.
Post Study Work Visa in Ireland: Duration by Degree Level
The amount of time you wish to stay in Ireland depends entirely on the level of your Irish degree under the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).
| Degree Level | NFQ Level | Stamp 1G Duration | Maximum Total Time in Ireland | Can You Extend? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honours Bachelor's Degree | Level 8 | 12 months | 7 years (Stamp 2 + Stamp 1G combined) | No extension for Level 8 |
| Master's Degree / Postgraduate Diploma | Level 9 | Up to 24 months (12 months initial + 12 months renewal) | 8 years (Stamp 2 + Stamp 1G combined) | Yes, one renewal for 12 months |
| PhD | Level 10 | Up to 24 months (12 months initial + 12 months renewal) | 8 years (Stamp 2 + Stamp 1G combined) | Yes, one renewal for 12 months |
Registration fee: EUR 300 (Rs. 32,766) per application, payable online by credit or debit card. This fee applies at first registration and again at renewal.
Note : Level 7 (Ordinary Degree) students enrolled after May 2017 are not eligible for this program.
Eligibility for Post Study Work Visa in Ireland
Before you start with your application, check the conditions carefully, as missing even one can result in a refused application.
- You hold a current, valid Stamp 2 student immigration permission at the time of applying.
- Your Irish institution or awarding body has officially notified you in writing that you have achieved the award for which you were enrolled on or after 1 January 2017.
- You apply within 6 months of receiving that official notification. Waiting for your graduation ceremony is not a valid reason to delay, you must apply as soon as you have your results.
- Your total time in Ireland as a non-EEA student has not exceeded 7 years (for Level 8) or 8 years (for Level 9/10).
- You are physically present in Ireland at the time of application. Applications cannot be submitted from outside Ireland.
- You have not already used the Third Level Graduate Programme more than twice.
Counselor insight: Provisional results are not accepted. Many universities issue a provisional transcript and then the final official results letter weeks later. Do not submit your Stamp 1G application with provisional results. Wait for the official letter, then apply immediately.
Documents Required for Your Stamp 1G Application
| Document | What is required? | India-Specific Note |
|---|---|---|
| Valid Passport | Biometric page, currently valid | Carry your old passports too if your Indian passport was renewed after you first registered in Ireland |
| Current IRP Card | Front and back of your Stamp 2 Irish Residence Permit card | This is the card you registered for in Ireland, not your Indian visa |
| Official Results Letter or Transcript | Final results confirming degree award from your Irish institution, not provisional | Your consolidated marksheet from India is not required here, but keep it handy as supporting evidence |
| Medical Insurance | Private insurance sourced in Ireland, covering accidents and hospital stays for the full Stamp 1G period with minimum EUR 25,000 in-hospital coverage | Minimum EUR 25,000 (Rs. 27.3L) in-hospital coverage is required. Travel insurance is not accepted. Do not use your Indian health insurance policy. |
| Application Fee | EUR 300 (Rs. 32,766), payable online by credit or debit card | Indian debit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are generally accepted; confirm with your bank before applying |
Step-by-Step Process to Apply for a Post Study Work Visa in Ireland
The process for applying for your post study work visa in Ireland depends on which part of the country you are residing in.
If you are in Dublin (or also Meath, Kildare, Wicklow, Cork, or Limerick):
Apply online through the ISD online portal, which handles both first-time switches from Stamp 2 and renewals. You do not need to attend in person for a renewal. After submitting, you will receive an email with a unique application reference number (OREG number). Keep this safe; it serves as proof that you applied even if your Stamp 2 expires during processing.
If you are in any other country:
As of early 2025, first-time switches from Stamp 2 to Stamp 1G for all counties are processed at the Registration Office at Burgh Quay, Dublin. You must book an appointment through the ISD Customer Service Portal and travel to Dublin in person.
Processing time: 6 to 8 weeks, per ISD guidance as of 2026..
Critical rules during processing:
- You cannot leave Ireland while your Stamp 1G application is pending. If you travel to India during this period, you will not be permitted to re-enter. Plan any home visits only after your new IRP card arrives.
- Until your Stamp 1G is approved, you remain on Stamp 2 conditions. From 1 October onwards in any academic year, Stamp 2 allows only 20 hours per week of work until the new permission is issued.

Counselor insight: A very common mistake is booking a flight home to India in August in the middle of Stamp 1G processing. Students who do so end up stranded. Apply the day your results arrive, wait for the IRP card, then book your trip.
Decision Framework: Which Scenario Matches You?
Scenario 1: Students who have completed a Level 8 Honours Bachelorโs from TU Maynooth University and will receive your results in May 2026
You are eligible for 12 months of Stamp 1G; no renewal is possible. Your Stamp 1G will cover you roughly until May or June 2027. Your priority in those 12 months is to secure a role that qualifies for a General Employment Permit or Critical Skills Employment Permit. If your employer has not submitted the permit application by the 10th or 11th month of your Stamp 1G, follow up proactively. Permit processing takes time on the employer's side too.
Scenario 2: You completed a Level 9 MSc in Computer Science or Data Analytics from UCD or Trinity and graduated in September 2025.
You are eligible for up to 24 months of Stamp 1G (two blocks of 12 months). Your first Stamp 1G period runs until September 2026. To renew for the second 12 months, you will need to show immigration authorities that you have been actively pursuing graduate-level employment: interview attendance records, registration with employment agencies, or a letter from a prospective employer all count. If you have a job by that point, your employer will likely be processing your employment permit instead.
Scenario 3: You completed a Level 8 degree in Ireland and want to stay for 24 months instead of 12.
Your only option is to return to education in Ireland at Level 9 and complete that qualification, bringing your total time within the 7-year overall limit. If you are already in year 5 or 6 of your Irish student pathway, check your total years carefully before committing to a postgraduate program. See Masters in Ireland for program options.
2026 Salary Overview: What You Need to Earn for a Work Permit?
Once your Stamp 1G period is ending, your employer must apply for a work permit. Ireland has revised its minimum annual salary requirements for all permit types as of March 1, 2026.
| Permit Type | Minimum Annual Salary from March 2026 | In INR (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| General Employment Permit (GEP) (standard) | EUR 36,605 | Rs. 40L |
| Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) with relevant degree | EUR 40,904 | Rs.44.7L |
| GEP, recent graduate (within 12 months of graduation from Irish institution) | EUR 34,009 | Rs. 37.2L |
| CSEP, recent graduate (within 12 months of graduation) | EUR 36,848 | Rs. 40.3L |
Source: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment December 2025
Why is the recent graduate discount window important?
If you secure a role within the first 12 months after graduation, your CSEP salary floor is EUR 36,848 (Rs. 40.3L) instead of the standard Rs. 44.7L (โฌ40,904). This is a meaningful difference in your negotiation with a potential employer.
For detailed guidance on what work permit to target, see Ireland work visas and jobs in Ireland for Indian graduates.
Counselor insight: The Critical Skills Employment Permit has a specific occupations list. Roles in software development, data analytics, cybersecurity, and pharmaceuticals have consistently been on it. Before accepting a job offer, confirm that your role and job title are on the DETE Critical Skills Occupations List because the permit category affects how quickly you can move to Stamp 4 (long-term residency).
Post Study Work Visa in Ireland: Month-by-Month Planning Calendar
This calendar is for Indian students who started on a September 2024 intake and are graduating in May-June 2026. Adjust the months if you are on a January intake.
| Month | What to Do? |
|---|---|
| Feb-Mar 2026 | Check your exam schedule again. Find the expiration date on your IRP card for Stamp 2. |
| Apr 2026 | Start getting your papers in order: buy Irish health insurance and make sure your Irish bank account is open for the EUR 300 (Rs. 32,766) fee. |
| May-June 2026 | Receive official results letter. Do not wait for your graduation ceremony. Open your ISD account and apply for Stamp 1G immediately. |
| June-Aug 2026 | Application processing period (6-8 weeks). Do not travel outside Ireland during this time. Continue job search. |
| Aug 2026 | Get your new IRP card with Stamp 1G and you are free to go. Start talking to employers about work permits. |
| Sep-Dec 2026 | Target roles on the Critical Skills Occupations List. Use the Recent Graduate discounted salary threshold, this applies only in your first 12 months after graduation. |
| By April-May 2027 (for Level 9 students) | Renew Stamp 1G for the second 12 months, or your employer submits an employment permit application. Both must happen before your first Stamp 1G expires. |
For January intake students graduating December 2026 or April 2027, shift every step in this calendar forward by 6 to 7 months. See January intake in Ireland for intake-specific timelines.
What to do When Things Go Wrong While Applying for a Post Study Work Visa in Ireland?
Situation 1: You missed the 6-month application window.
This situation is serious. There is no automatic grace period. If your Stamp 2 expires and you did not apply within 6 months of receiving your results, you will need to contact the ISD directly and explain your circumstances. Exceptional reasons (such as a documented medical emergency) may be considered, but there is no guarantee. Do not miss this window.
Situation 2: Your application is taking longer than 8 weeks, and your Stamp 2 is about to expire.
Keep your OREG number (the reference number emailed to you after submission). This is your documented proof that you applied on time. You can show it to an employer or present it if questioned. Contact ISD through their official portal to follow up.
Situation 3: Your application is refused.
Read the refusal letter carefully, and it will state the reason. Common reasons include expired Stamp 2 at the time of application, insufficient medical insurance, or incomplete documentation. You can write to the ISD with additional documentation if the refusal was based on a correctable error. If the refusal stands, you would need to leave Ireland.
Situation 4: Your Stamp 1G ends, and you do not have an employment permit.
There is no automatic extension and no grace period. If you do not have an employment permit or another qualifying immigration permission before your Stamp 1G expires, you are expected to leave Ireland. There is no self-employment option under Stamp 1G, you cannot freelance your way to staying.
Situation 5: You are on Stamp 1G and want to renew for a second year (Level 9/10 only).
To get the second 12 months, you must show immigration authorities that you have been making genuine efforts to find graduate-level employment. Attend interviews, sign up with graduate employment agencies, and keep records of all your job search activity. These records may be requested.
See Ireland student visa rejection rate for guidance on how Irish immigration refusals typically work.
Conclusion
Three things to do before your Stamp 2 expires:
- Apply within 6 months of receiving your official results: The 6-month window starts from your results notification, not your graduation date. Many Indian students in Ireland graduate in October or November, months after receiving their results in May or June. The clock has already started.
- Target the salary window for recent graduates with discounts. If you secure a role within 12 months of graduation, your Critical Skills Employment Permit salary floor is EUR 36,848 (Rs. 40.3L) and not the standard EUR 40,904 (Rs. 44.7L). That difference matters while negotiating an offer with an employer who is sponsoring your permit.
- Do not leave Ireland until your Stamp 1G IRP card is physically in your hand: Processing takes 6 to 8 weeks. Booking a flight home during that window has stranded students before. Wait for the card, then plan your trip.
Frequently Asked Questions About Post Study Work Visa in Ireland
-
How long is the post study work visa in Ireland?
Stamp 1G is granted for 12 months initially. If you have a Level 9 or Level 10 qualification, you can apply to renew for a second 12 months, giving you 24 months in total. Level 8 graduates receive a maximum of 12 months with no renewal option.
-
What is Stamp 1G in Ireland?
Stamp 1G is an immigration permit that replaces your student Stamp 2 after graduation. It allows you to work full-time in Ireland without needing an employer-sponsored work permit for the duration of the stamp. The goal is to give you time to find graduate-level employment and transition to a long-term work permit.
-
What is the post-study work visa fee in Ireland?
The registration fee is EUR 300 (Rs. 32,766) per application. This applies both at first registration and at renewal. There is no additional visa application fee on top of this amount.
-
Can I bring my family on a post-study work visa in Ireland?
Your Stamp 1G does not automatically entitle dependents to live and work in Ireland. Spouses or partners must apply for permission in their own right. If approved, they are typically granted a Stamp 3 permission, which allows them to reside in Ireland but not work. There is no automatic family reunification under Stamp 1G.
-
What happens if I do not get a job during my Stamp 1G period?
If your Stamp 1G ends without an employment permit being issued, you are expected to leave Ireland. There is no provision to extend Stamp 1G beyond the permitted 12 or 24 months on general grounds. Self-employment or freelancing is not permitted under Stamp 1G.
-
What is the difference between Stamp 1G and a work permit in Ireland?
Stamp 1G is a temporary immigration permission that allows you to work freely without a specific employer. A work permit (General Employment Permit or Critical Skills Employment Permit) is tied to a specific employer and role and must be applied for by the employer on your behalf. Stamp 1G is the bridge that buys you time to secure a work permit.
-
Can I extend my post-study work visa in Ireland?
Only Level 9 and Level 10 graduates can apply for a second 12-month period, giving a maximum of 24 months. Level 8 graduates cannot extend beyond 12 months. To get the second year, you must demonstrate genuine job search activity during the first year.
-
Can I travel outside Ireland while my Stamp 1G application is pending?
No. Once you submit your Stamp 1G application and are waiting for your new IRP card, you must remain in Ireland. Leaving before the card arrives means you cannot re-enter. Only travel after you physically receive your new Stamp 1G IRP card.
-
What sectors are hiring in Ireland in 2026, and what jobs can I do on Stamp 1G?
On Stamp 1G, you can work in any sector and any role full-time. However, transitioning to a Critical Skills Employment Permit provides the fastest pathway to long-term residency. Remember that your job title and role must appear on the DETE Critical Skills Occupations List. In 2026, roles in software development, data analytics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare administration continue to have strong hiring activity in Ireland. Check the current list on the DETE official website before accepting an offer.
