Human behaviour itself is so unwieldy, complex and ever evolving that we are most intrigued by ourselves. How do we differ from one another in many ways yet share concrete similarities? While there are many questions that we may never be able to answer about ourselves, psychology is able to analyse and predict, if not answer many of them. When I was in high school,a member of my family had been diagnosed with psychotic depression. The general lack of awareness and helplessness about what was happening was frustrating.We had been searching for counsellors to help her, which is when I realised how important yet underappreciated this field was and further drew me towards it.Often during her psychotic episodes,I noticed how i dealt with the situation in a rational and calm manner, which can be hard to do when you see someone close to you suffering.In hindsight this makes me believe that I may have the tenacity to work in this field. When I began studying the subject in college,I felt as though I was able to understand myself much better. I was able to rationalise behaviours which might have seemed irrational to me otherwise. I was able to deal with problems more effectively, and less self destructively.I realised that if it helped me ease the copious amount of stress in my life,being able to do the same for others on a grander scale was something I was willing to put time and effort into. My education,from primary to senior secondary, occurred under diverse circumstances owing to my father’s job in the armed forces, which required us to move every 2 years. As a result,I had lived in eight different states by the time I was 16,which made me a more inquisitive person who was open to new experiences. During my senior secondary years,my school provided psychology as an elective subject,which is where I was first exposed to it. After studying it ,though at a very surface level, I was certain that this is where my interest lay, following which, I received a scholar badge in 12 th grade for meritorious performance in the board examination. As a doctor, I entered and explored the multiple branches of medicine and found Psychiatry to be a field I was continually drawn towards. When I joined --- Hospital and Research Centre in 2018 as a Medical Officer in the communities, intensive care unit and emergency unit, I observed that many patients had some psychosomatic illness underlying their primary complaint. Still, they weren’t addressed as quickly and effectively as the rest. The primary reason for this is that my country has a preponderance of stigma associated with mental illness. This archaic belief is one of the main reasons why people are hesitant to approach the concerned doctor and talk about their problems. I want to help people understand that mental health is just as important as physical health and that addressing these problems is paramount. Hence, I want to pursue my MSc Psychology. I graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from --- School of Medicine, Navi Mumbai, in 2018. This also included a one-year rotatory internship at --- Hospital. Out of the pre-clinical subjects we were taught in our first year, I enjoyed learning about human physiology. The para-clinical subjects, which included Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic medicine and Pharmacology, helped me form a well-rounded base in medicine, right from disease progression to diagnosis, analysing the abnormal changes tissues undergo during an illness, the study of various pathogens and a thorough understanding drug mechanics and their metabolism in the body. I have always been a very perceptive, caring, and empathic person with a strong inclination to encourage, support, and empower a diverse population of people. I sought help from a mental health professional eventually but I lost a large part of my life to a treatable mental disorder. My struggle with anxiety made salient to me the challenges children still face in accessing mental healthcare. Today, I believe building a career in clinical psychology has been the best decision of my life as I aspire to leap forward with a prestigious overseas program in MSc Applied Clinical Psychology. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I was deeply fascinated by psychopathology, psychotherapy, and developmental psychology, which ignited my desire to pursue a specialized program in Applied Clinical Psychology. My work in the lab has also helped me cultivate skills in communicating scientific research by presenting at a conference and a webinar. Apart from being an undergraduate teaching assistant for two courses in the last year, I am currently employed as a Teaching Fellow for the course, Developmental Psychology, all of which has helped me improve my skills in providing academic support to students. Along with academics, I have enrolled myself to experience the practical side of Psychology, especially applied and clinical psychology as well. Before the pandemic, I completed an internship program at the Nightingales Trust- Bagchi Center, Bangalore, India for dementia patients. I worked with older patients and my job involved planning activities for them to facilitate their physical and mental well-being. Presented a poster related to this experience titled “Impact of Dementia on Psychomotor and Intellectual abilities of old age” at the National-Level Service-Learning Conference held at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) Bannerghatta Road Campus, Bangalore, India. Apart from this, I have also completed two online courses “Addiction treatment: clinical skills for healthcare providers” authorized by ----- University, Connecticut, and “Organizational Behavior: How to Manage People” authorized by IESE Business School, Barcelona, Spain. In the following years, I took up an internship with WAAMH a mentorship-based organization that works with corporates to ensure well being of employees. Later, I interned in positions of HR in the supreme incubator, a company that fosters startups in schools, and have been working at 4 CHAMPS chess academy as their part-time HR. As I move towards the next stage in reaching closer to my dream, choosing the United Kingdom for my master's is a choice that came spontaneously. The United Kingdom has always been famous for not only providing a wide range of courses to choose from but also providing a host of opportunities, especially in my chosen field of expertise. The emphasis on practical learning and research has always piqued my interest. The universities in the UK are recognized worldwide and something that instantly grabbed my attention was the student diversity that brings together learners from all backgrounds. It teaches one how to respect cultural differences, learn different values, and appreciate diversity. I believe that studying in the United Kingdom will contribute greatly to becoming a holistic individual and will lay me down the right path to excelling in my career. The Psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy MSc ORGANISATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY course offered by the University of East Anglia is the perfect course for my career path. The emphasis on research in the course curriculum as well as the importance given to practical learning will contribute to attaining a holistic education and will develop my research and applied psychology skills. The importance laid on academic and practical skills piqued my interest. The placements offered and career prospects by the course grabbed my attention as it enhances my career prospects and exposure to the work environment. The all-encompassing and comprehensive course offered by the University of East Anglia is a step in the right direction toward my attaining my doctoral in Psychology and establishing a career as a clinical psychologist. I aspire to become a strong advocate for mental health and I want to work toward breaking down the barriers to accessing mental health support. I am deeply interested in understanding how mental health support can help individuals working in different organizational contexts and help the people improve the quality of their life with few effective practices. I believe that my skill set and passion for learning and psychology will be an asset to what the University of East Anglia has to offer. Twenty questions has always been my favorite game to play. From brunch to sleepovers, this game became my secret tool to engage in a conversation and build a relationship with the people around me. With each connection, I grew. The world around me shifted from a bleak, one-dimensional viewpoint, to one more accommodating of the various perspectives around me. To me, this was a game changer. Each question revealed another color in me, another side to my interest and personality that I never recognized. But yet, somehow they all came together like a Rubix cube. And the structure that held my Rubix cube together was my love for understanding human behavior. Much like the Rubix cube, there were several facets to this love. During my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, multiple domains such as abnormal psychology, organizational psychology, positive psychology, and statistics, called out to me. To seek more clarity, I sought out as many opportunities as I could. In one such experience, I worked with the Believers school, supported by a group of teachers committed to the idea that dyslexia is a disability that can be managed with training and guidance. I explored the impact that differences in metabolic distribution can cause and curated learning modules that would aid their learning. This experience was a testament to the idea that each individual is built differently, regardless of their age. With this understanding, I sought to understand the differences that make each one unique. I trained along with Dr. --- on a study that analyzed the role of attachment in the psychological well- being of gifted children. Dr. --- guided me through the fundamentals of research, and the process of formatting an abstract thought into full-fledged research. Under her guidance, my desire to contribute to the field grew. For my undergraduate thesis, I analyzed the attachment styles of human beings further, but this time, under the context of adult romantic relationships. I studied 440 adults in romantic relationships to explore the role of attachment patterns in the love language of adults. As an avid romantic, I was certain that there would be a relationship between these variables. Yet, I had to deal with the frustration of rejecting my hypothesis, as my results were statistically insignificant. This was a turning point in my life. I first hand experienced the need to be a flexible, open-minded researcher, and I readily challenged my own biases. Upon further analysis of my data, I realized that a significant number of people in my sample had more than one primary love language. Hence, even though my original hypothesis was rejected, my commitment to the process helped me better understand why it was rejected. I had the opportunity to work with the Chennai branch of Cambridge Mobile Telematics as their Human Resource person. Through this experience, I learned to assess the personality and potential of several candidates, keeping in mind the goals of the organization. Much to my surprise, several points of my understanding of social psychology and positive psychology came to play at my workplace. Given my knowledge of these fields, I strived to create a healthy working environment within the company. Whilst this was a great experience, I longed for the satisfaction I received in helping people. In hindsight, I’m grateful for every experience I had because they all brought me one step closer to understanding all sides of my personality and interests. Now, I have finally found the clarity for which I had been yearning. I fully understand and accept my passion and potential in psychology. I’m eager to learn more about this subject, and contribute to the field with my knowledge and research. I wish to pursue MSc Psychology at University of EAST LONDON . This has been a perennially growing discipline, constantly enhancing humanity’s understanding of their own thoughts and behaviour. It is this dynamic nature of the field, as a copious influx of ideas is maintained, that has succeeded in keeping my curiosity alive and helped me strive to continue studying the subject and constantly learn more. Moreover, I believe it is imperative that I add that persisting with this course will provide me with an opportunity to perceive the myriad factors that explain and influence our changing thoughts and behavior. I feel I am well prepared to enter graduate study, and my strong motivation and career goals are a good match for what University of East London has to offer.
