Your Gateway to Southeast Asian Research: This Fellowship Might Be the Key
The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme ( let’s call it WGWVFP) is for you if you are interested in researching the nexus of big-power relations and their impact on Southeast Asia. It’s named after Professor Wang Gungwu, who is one of the most respected scholars in the region and the former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute.
This programme is all about supporting researchers and policymakers who are examining how major power rivalries, mainly the US and China, are shaping Southeast Asia today.
Here’s what it covers and why it might just be your next big opportunity.
What You Can Research
If your work touches on big-picture regional issues, you’re in the right place. The programme focuses on:
- What the US-China dynamic means for Southeast Asia
- Security flashpoints like the South China Sea and China-ASEAN ties
- Major trade and infrastructure moves (think: Belt and Road Initiative, RCEP)
- How China’s rise is impacting everyday communities in the region
- The way countries are using digital media and tech to shape public opinion and flex their influence
You don’t need to fit into a box, but your research should be timely, relevant, and grounded in the region.
Let’s talk perks
If you get selected, you’re looking at:
- A monthly stipend (includes a housing subsidy)
- Round-trip economy airfare to and from Singapore
- Workspace, a computer, and full access to the ISEAS library
- A chance to meet Professor Wang Gungwu himself
- Flexibility to suggest cost-sharing
What You’ll Do (Besides Research)
This is a research gig with real-world impact. Fellows are expected to:
- Write for ISEAS Perspective and ISEAS Fulcrum (two excellent platforms for regional analysis)
- Present your findings at an in-house seminar
- Stay connected with the ISEAS network even after the fellowship, because once you're in, you're family
Who Can Apply?
The program is open to:
- Post-doctoral researchers
- Mid-career policy professionals (don’t have a PhD? No problem—as long as your experience and research hold up)
Bottom line: If you’ve got solid credentials and a compelling research plan, you're encouraged to apply.
