This is confirmed by the Swedish Migration Agency and codified in the government bill published in December 2025. Hospitality and entry-level retail roles may fall below this threshold. Plan accordingly.

Sweden has one of the most student-friendly work policies in Europe. Unlike the UK or Germany, which cap international student working hours, Sweden places no official hourly limit during the semester. The Swedish Migration Agency's expectation is that you maintain full-time study, which typically means 40 hours per week of academic work. How you manage the remaining hours is largely up to you.

What this requirement means practically: Most Indian students working part-time in Sweden manage 15–20 hours per week during term time and work full-time during semester breaks.

Note: The Swedish government has presented a formal bill proposing a cap of 15 working hours per week for bachelor's and master's students during academic terms, with no cap during summer breaks. The bill, presented by the Ministry of Justice, targets a June 11, 2026 implementation date and requires parliamentary approval before taking effect. As of March 2026, it has not yet been enacted. Check the Swedish Migration Agency's official website and your university's international student office for confirmation before making decisions based on this.

These are the most accessible part-time roles for Indian students in 2026-27, based on realistic hiring patterns:

Working 15 hours a week at an average of SEK 130/hour gives you roughly SEK 7,800 per month (approximately INR 64,000). That covers a significant portion of living costs in smaller Swedish cities, though Stockholm is more expensive.

On average, Indian students working part-time in Sweden earn between SEK 8,000 to 10,000 per month, which is approximately INR 66,000 to INR 82,000.

Counselor insight: Warehouse and logistics jobs at companies like PostNord and Bring ramp up sharply before major shopping seasons, particularly October-December. Students who apply in September often secure a stretch of full-time hours over the winter break and earn enough to cover three to four months of rent. In Sweden, the employer starts the work permit application through the Swedish Migration Agency's online portal. You can't apply on your own. When the employer submits, you get an email telling you what to do next.

According to the Swedish Migration Agency's official fee page, the work permit application fee for employees is SEK 2,200 (approximately Rs.1,82,600). This fee is non-refundable, regardless of the outcome. Applications can also be submitted at VFS Global centres across India in New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad.

It takes an average of 52 days to process a full application; however, situations with good documentation can be processed faster. Your residency permit card will come about four weeks after you give your biometrics.

Arbetsförmedlingen is Sweden's official public employment service. It lists jobs across all sectors and is free to use. This is the most reliable starting point for any serious job search in Sweden.

LinkedIn is widely used by Swedish employers, particularly in IT, engineering, and life sciences. Many Swedish hiring managers actively search for candidates here. Keep your profile in English, list your Swedish university, and connect with alumni from your program who are already working.

Akademikernas a-kassa / Academic Work specializes in graduate and entry-level roles for university-educated candidates. It is one of the more active platforms for recent international graduates.

Platsbanken is Arbetsförmedlingen's dedicated job listing database. You can search by occupation code and filter by region, which is more precise than the main site. It is Sweden's largest job portal, with approximately 125,000 vacancies at any given time.

EURES is the EU's cross-border job mobility portal. It lists Swedish vacancies open to international applicants and includes roles that explicitly mention visa sponsorship.

For part-time and on-campus roles, your university's student jobs board is the first place to check. KTH, Chalmers, Stockholm University, and Uppsala University all maintain internal listings that are not published anywhere else.

Recruitment agencies operate actively in Sweden, but for Indian students on a post-study permit, working through them adds a layer of complexity. Agency contracts can complicate the work permit process because the legal employer (the agency) and the actual workplace are different entities. Direct applications to companies are simpler for permit purposes. Use agencies for leads and market intelligence, but aim to secure a direct contract.

Second, check whether your role falls under one of the 152 shortage occupation exemptions where a lower threshold may apply (healthcare, metalworking, certain IT roles). Third, continue on your post-study permit and search for a qualifying offer from a different employer.

You did not get the job, and your post-study permit is expiring:

The 12-month post-study permit cannot be extended under the same category. If the permit expires without a job offer, you must return to India. There is no grace period. This is the most important deadline to track. Begin your job search in month one, not month ten.

Your work permit was rejected because of your employer's history:

From June 1, 2026, under Government Bill Prop. 2025/26:87, Swedish authorities may refuse work permit applications where the employer has been issued sanctions, has a tax penalty related to employment reporting, or is suspected of or convicted of relevant offences. This rule targets the employer's compliance record, not your personal history as an applicant. Before your employer submits the application, ask them directly whether they have faced any Migration Agency sanctions or employment-related penalties. If they hesitate, treat that as a red flag.

You were offered a cash-only or commission-only role:

Swedish law is clear: if you are performing actual work, you must receive a contract and be paid. Cash-only or under-the-table work is illegal and can affect your residence permit. Commission-only sales roles with no base salary will not count toward collective agreement standards. Do not accept these, regardless of how the income is framed.

1. Verify your salary threshold before your employer submits the application. If you are applying for a work permit after June 1, 2026, your offer must meet SEK 33,390 per month. Do not let your employer submit at SEK 29,680. This is the single most common and avoidable reason for work permit rejection among Indian graduates in Sweden right now.

2. Apply for your post-study permit before your student permit expires, not after. The 12-month job search period begins when the permit is issued. Every week you delay is a week you lose from your job search window. This is not a formality you can sort later.

3. Start building your Swedish professional network in year one, not the final year. Indian students in Sweden typically find full-time jobs through referrals, faculty connections, or internship conversions. Career fairs in October and March are your best entry points. Treating your part-time job, research role, or TA position as networking is as important as treating it as income.
