When it comes to rankings, the University of Notre Dame has often maintained a consistent place over time. The university is ranked 211 overall for 2021 according to the QS - World University Ranking. The university was formerly ranked 210 for 2020. In the 2021 THE (Times Higher Education) - University Ranking, the university is rated 170. The university has previously been ranked 157 for 2020. While Times Higher Education (THE) accords equal weight to Research, Teaching, and Citations at 30% each, QS places the greatest emphasis on Academic Reputation (40%) followed by Citations per Faculty at 20% each and the Faculty/Student Ratio. 

According to US News & World Report's Global Universities, the university is ranked 238 globally for 2021 and 223 globally for 2020. The university is mentioned in the National University Ranking by US News & World Report, where it is ranked 19th for 2021. In addition to other rating factors, the US News & World Report bases their rankings on the number of publications cited, global research reputation, and regional research reputation (12.5% each). For 2019 and 2020, the university received a ranking from ARWU (Shanghai Ranking) - Universities Rankings between 301 and 400. In the Shanghai ranking, universities are not ranked according to their standing among academics or employers; instead, they are ranked according to the calibre of academic research they produce and the number of Nobel Prizes its team has earned.
 

Regarding the University of Notre Dame's course rankings, US News & World Report has given the university's business programmes high marks. The Graduate Business School was ranked 30 for 2021 and 2020, the MBA Business Analytics programme was 21 for 2021, and the UG Business programme was 12 for 2020 and 2021.

The engineering programmes have also received high rankings from US News & World Report, with PG Aerospace Engineering coming in at number 21, Biomedical Engineering at number 71, Chemical Engineering at number 28, Civil Engineering at number 38, Electrical Engineering at number 39, and Mechanical Engineering at number 37.

US News & World Report has ranked the PG Computer Engineering at 45 for 2021 in computer courses. The approach used by US News & World Report to rank subjects includes, among other things, considerations such as student selection (25%), the views of business school administrators (25%), and employment outcome (21%).
