Five years in a row, the university has received an ARWU (Shanghai Ranking) - Universities Rankings ranking between 151 and 200. In the Shanghai ranking, universities are not ranked according to their standing among academics or employers; instead, they are ranked according to the calibre of academic research they produce and the number of Nobel Prizes their team has earned.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst has improved significantly from its previous ranking of 305 in 2020 to a new high of 270 in the QS - World University Ranking for 2021. The university has also received rankings from US News & World Report's Global Universities. It is listed in the publication's National University Ranking, which now holds the 142nd and 66th positions for the years 2021 and 2022, respectively.

While the US News & World Report uses global research reputation, regional research reputation, and several publications cited (12.5% each) among other ranking characteristics, QS places the most emphasis on academic reputation (40%) followed by faculty/student ratio and citations per faculty (20%).

According to QS Subject Ranking, the Global MBA programme and Accounting & Finance courses are ranked at 201+ and 151-200 (2020), respectively. The Graduate Business School and Undergraduate Business Program both received rankings of 53 from US News & World Report for 2021 and 2020, respectively.

US News & World Report has put PG Chemical Engineering at 36, PG Civil Engineering at 46, PG Electrical Engineering at 58, and PG Mechanical Engineering at 56 for 2021 when speaking of engineering courses. The PG Computer Engineering course is listed at 45 for 2021 by US News & World Report. The approach used by US News & World Report to rank subjects includes, among other things, considerations such as student selection (25%), the views of business school administrators (25%), and employment outcome (21%).
