Georgetown Institution, a private research university with its headquarters in Washington, D.C., was founded in 1789, and according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking), it was ranked between 301 and 400 in 2019 and 201-300 in 2020. While Georgetown has largely remained between 200 and 250 in QS's Top Universities rankings over the past five years. Georgetown is ranked 230rd in the world among universities by QS for 2021. In their best university rating for 2021, another well-known publisher, Times Higher Education (THE), placed Georgetown in 120th place.

From 2018 through 2020, Georgetown University was ranked among the top 300 universities by US News & World Report. At its ranking of the world's universities for 2021, US News placed the university in 322nd place. From 2018 to 2021, US News placed Georgetown in the top 50 universities in the country.

From 2016 to 2021, Bloomberg placed Georgetown among the top 50 b-schools in the USA. Georgetown has been ranked in the top 50 global MBA programmes by Financial Times (FT), a well-known source of business rankings, from 2016 through 2021. Additionally, Georgetown's ranking rose from 44th in 2016 to 31st in 2020. It means that the university has done well in the areas of pay, internationalisation, and faculty calibre, which are important ranking factors for FT's MBA rating.

From 2017 through 2020, QS (Top universities) consistently ranked Georgetown between 151-200. Since 2018, QS has ranked Georgetown among the top 100 MBA programmes worldwide. The university is ranked between 151 and 175 in THE's PG Business and Economics ranking for 2021. From 2018 to 2021, US News & World Report ranked Georgetown among the top 50 graduate business schools. From 2018 through 2021, US News ranked the university among the top 20 undergraduate business schools in the country.
