How a person experiences space is subjective, but to make a space perceivable in its most simplistic form is the responsibility of an Interior Designer and an Architect. There is a need for green pockets and breathing spaces in our concrete jungles, that allows people to rejuvenate and refresh. Going into a future where efficiency is given as much importance as wellbeing, I want to design spaces that are well connected and mentally welcoming to the end user. I understand that designing the interior is very important whether it’s a home, school, office or any other building as it makes a place look unique and fit for purpose. I want to pursue a Masters in Interior Architecture and Design, to design better spaces for a new normal that integrates wellness as well as functionality with respect to context. I hope to further learn and develop my interests in different styles of design and techniques, concept and space planning. Growing up in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and then moving to the Metropolitan of Bangalore, India to pursue Bachelors in Architecture in 2014, one does notice the stark difference in the attention given to minute detailing. While in Bahrain, I had gone through wanting to be a Pilot, then a Civil Engineer, ultimately being fascinated and inspired by the Bahrain World Trade Center designed by ---, to become an Architect. At that point of time, I took up Architecture to become the next Architect who designs another fancy looking sky scraper, though through my education and work experience I’ve come to realize that all is not cakewalk in design. I have understood that there are factors that have to be considered which either enhance the quality of life, or cause misery to the people in and around the development. Through the coursework at the School of Architecture, Dayananda Sagar Academy of Technology and Management, Bangalore gave me solid foundation knowledge and prepared me to understand the nuances in this field. Our faculty encouraged and supported us with constant opportunities for further learning outside of the curriculum. The last three semesters were immensely impactful as during this time I indulged into practical implementation of my knowledge in Architecture. Working with them on our design projects, attempting competitions and being part of workshops helped me broaden my knowledge and helped me bring out my creative side with confidence. My Final Year Thesis was based on “Developing Cemeteries” in Mumbai, India. I was guided by an experienced architect, Mr. --- --- throughout the project. When I used to visit my grandparents place in Mumbai, I kept passing by a cemetery placed in the opposite lane. The busiest cremation I have known which is situated in the middle of the city which is always crowded and congested. My thesis topic was “Rethinking of Cemetery” so that a good connectivity with the rest of the city is followed. Through this project, we were able to design and suggest changes to the local area for improving habitability and inclusiveness in the society. Also, to embrace and provide burial space for the 3 major cultures/religions represented in the community: Hindu, Muslim and Christian. This experience was crucial for preparing me before I stepped out into the professional world. It allowed me to develop an eye for structural flaws, understand the human element and work upon my ideas to improve living conditions through architectural and interior choices. My efforts in this field are not limited to my academic milestones. To develop my skills and diversify my work as an Architect, I undertook several workshops, attended seminars, and indulged in intellectual discourses with like-minded individuals on online platforms. Some themes on which I focus most are Sustainability in Design, Sustainable Architecture, Geodesic Dome Workshops, Cardboard and furniture Design, Bio-mimicry Design and Urban Landscaping Theories. My time as an Intern at Rhythm of Space Design Studio, Bangalore, India in 2018-19 was where I really explored and understood the dynamics of various large-scale projects. As a professional, my highest priority was to focus on Sustainability, quality of building materials and structural strength. I learnt about newer typologies in interiors and designed spaces for residential, commercial spaces, home offices, and co-working environments. I learnt how social connectivity between end users gives meaning to the spaces they inhabit. I realized how interaction through design motivates people to express themselves. My last project as an intern was to design residential spaces for the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM). I was involved in designing the exterior and the interior spaces. Through that project I learnt that by taking an active approach in design and development of spaces, architects and interior designers can enhance the wellbeing of people even in their homes or outdoor spaces. I feel that it is important to build upon my previous training and education in a stimulating atmosphere full of diverse viewpoints and ideas. Pursuing a master’s degree in interior design allows me to dive deeper into the discipline. The course will serve as a perfect addition to my professional and academic profile as an Interior Designing and Architecture Consultant. I have worked as an Interior Designer at Bonito Designs, Bangalore, India in 2019-2022 where I got a lot of exposure with handling projects from the point where the client approaches for their requirements to handing over the project. Also learnt about the technical details of how the carcass is formed and the hardware’s used. The decision to pursue an advanced course in this field is based on the fact that I found my current work experience to be insufficient and lacking w.r.t the type of projects I wish to take up ahead in my career. I figured that to understand the various technological trends, developments, and breakthroughs in this field, one must learn from the best. An advanced course such as this will help me understand and become proficient in themes like urban interiors, furniture design, western and Indian aesthetics. Along with this, it would help me discover creative minds, intellectual figures, and leading thinkers in the field of Architecture and Design. In this course, I will be learning how to overcome technical, social, and spatial challenges. Therefore, this course will not only give my professional capabilities a boost but will also be instrumental in preparing me to take on challenging projects in the future. I chose Heriot Watt University as after completing this course, I would be prepared to take on challenging projects of a larger scale such as Public Spaces (Metro stations, Parks, shopping malls etc.) when I come back to India. Pursuing a Masters in Interior Architecture and Design from Heriot Watt University, UK will give me the opportunity to learn how to apply better techniques, tools, concepts, and theories, all while giving me chance to gain exposure to new technology being developed in the Silicon Fen. I am excited by the array of elective subjects available in the curriculum and I hope to incubate fresher ideas through different perspectives. At the beginning of the sixth semester of my undergraduate studies in Architecture, I was drawn to diagnosing and finding solutions to problems in the public domain through architecture. Even as a kid, I recall, I was always keen on observing the intricacies of design found in nature, the curls on budding leaves, and the conch shells in temples with their Fibonacci patterns. Naturally, I enrolled in an architecture school, and this skillset, latent in appearance, got me through university with good grades. However, my perspective on the impact of architecture changed for the better when I realized my somewhat childish interest in design formulation could uplift the quality of life through architectural interventions. This enhanced my curiosity to observe humans and how different species interact with their ecosystems in closer detail. I was convinced that one's surroundings hold the key to the sole creation of humble yet thoughtful individuals.' Recognizing the need,' --- --- famously said,' is the primary condition for design, which I, as an ambitious architect, consistently believe in. Every design made by mother nature is to satisfy the immediate needs of her creations. To discover the actual impact, I was keen on a detailed study of my undergraduate thesis titled "Kintsugi — Product design and Art therapy center, Channapatna," which facilitates an infrastructure necessary to revamp a historic sustainable craft and proposes a replicable business model that finds new scope in the modern world. For this purpose, I travelled to the ancient and historic toy-making village of Channapatna and met with their local artisans and their families to document the plight of these neglected artists. After extensive market research and analysis of the market trends, I formulated a design to develop a community that is a biosphere of commercial, societal, and residential entities. As the project was conceptualized through a beautiful amalgamation of both 'learning' and 'unlearning' processes, it was made very clear to me that only communities that can heal themselves and help others in the process have the potential to rebuild a country. At one point, I realized I was not designing just a product or an art therapy centre but a closely knit community that is a circular economy by design. In a country like India, with its historical and eco-friendly practices and products, this is a step towards a stable, greener tomorrow. Much appreciated by the jury, my thesis was awarded a commendable 8 GPA (out of 10), and I ultimately earned my architecture degree from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, Kerala, with a cumulative GPA of 7.32. The academic experience earned during the course gave me a strong understanding of modern architectural concepts and poised me to explore my multi-disciplinary talents. During NASA (National Architecture Students Association), our design team was shortlisted for the prestigious Louis Khan and Reubens trophies, while the fashion-show team I led received a citation for its unique, bold concept of bringing attention to the "Architectural impact on Mother Nature." Also, being an integral member of my school, the Kho-Kho team won the national level championship twice, which boosted my team building and leadership skills. As part of my curriculum, I worked as an intern architect at Keystone architects, Bangalore, which helped me gain practical experience and put my skills to the test. I picked up some relevant design aspects in the residential projects I worked on that strengthened my architectural capabilities. After completing my bachelor's degree, we, a group of eleven women from our batch, paved the foundation for a start-up called 'The Yellow Company,' which focuses on multi-disciplinary --- --- --- MA IN ARCHITECTURE products in art and architecture. This was a foundation set in stone that helped me to build my entrepreneurial skills and leadership qualities. Co-founding this small enterprise just after graduation, we generated enough revenue and a solid customer base in just a year and got featured in the local daily for our innovative business idea. This start-up helped our team members to enhance various skills, such as planning and implementing projects and managing finances. After my studies, I started practicing as a junior for Space ART architects, Calicut, Kerala, which envisions building sustainable communities. Being a part of this beautiful firm for over a year, I have gained immense experience strategizing, controlling, and managing architectural work and on-site construction. After getting registered with the Council of Architecture in India, I was given a lead role in a prestigious project of our firm, "Barefoot on the hills," a community township- the largest of its kind in the country. Here, I have learned that to become a successful architect, one should always combine their artistic vision with not just the customer's needs and requirements but to justify what we give back to the ecosystem of that particular context. As an architect, I enjoy combining these aspects to focus on sustainable construction practices creating a habitat that' gives more than what it takes,' which aligns with my professional interests of building settlements with a possible carbon-neutral or carbon-negative future. My team won the nationwide competition for the master plan development of a government project- "Dharmadam Educational Hub," which is unique in its design, embracing an eco-friendly architectural style. An integrated green campus planned over 13.2 acres of land; this project offers interactive spaces that enhance the quality of education in five different fields of study. Preserving 3.5 acres of the campus as a living museum of biodiversity increases the area's ecological value by contributing to the microclimate and is an example of good practice. In addition to the above, as a member of the space ART team, I took part in several discussions with the stakeholders of different projects, from State Government ministers to the children that need their playground, for establishing projects that explore the idea of developing sustainable campus through a unique architectural style. A truly enlightening experience, this streamlined a new path to combine my inherent artistic skills with modern professional learning. I dream of exploring new territories in architectural design that contribute to a sustainable ecosystem. This is the sole reason I chose to further grow my understanding of urban design and constructional aspects with social plugins catering to human ergonomics and understandings in both macro and micro domains towards a better lifestyle. I have spent the last six years of my life acquiring a sound understanding of design and structural practicality and realizing its significance in Architecture. Through sheer determination, both in academics and professional work experiences, I realized that Architecture is, after all, not only about brewing fascinating ideas and mind-blowing concepts and designs. A project plan is deemed good, sound, or healthy if it can be implemented with integration into the urban fiber and offers sustainable plans and designs. Thus, in order to understand and distinguish effective and practical designs from impractical ones, it is vital to have comprehensive knowledge both academically and professionally. My journey so far has been rewarding and endowed me with the understanding that architecture is a multi-layered domain; beyond the strata of function and structure, materials and texture, lie the deepest and most compulsive layers of all. My responsibilities included catering to multiple clients, analyzing their sites, providing layouts, producing detailed sections and approvals. The rewarding professional experiences at these firms bestowed me the ability to carry out plans, engage with clientele, working-drawings, render, supervise, and finally oversee the construction process. Additionally, completing my Bachelor’s coursework in Architecture, finding inspiration in nature, and exploring my interests in the domain have catapulted me to apply for your prestigious program. My passion for landscape, eco-friendly, green, and sustainable architecture, along with my academic aptitude and skills, has propelled me to advance my career trajectory in the field. Here, three hundred thirty beds girls hostels for the Sports Authority of India, Bangalore Campus, and Gateway Design for the government, Ayurvedic College, Bangalore, and 3D-modelling assistance for the sports centre at Hubli are some of the projects I worked on. While I worked hard to build a strong skill set as an undergraduate student, the acute awareness of gaining hands-on experience steered me towards several courses. To that account, I have completed many software courses that have aided me in this field like Auto cad 2D & 3D, Sketchup, Rhino 7 and Grasshopper, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Enscape, Lumion, Twin motion, V. Ray, Ecotect, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Blender, Maya, Sketchup Parametric plugins. I also participated in an internship at origin architects related to my field (Interior designer, Jr. Architect) during the same to gain solid industry experience and better my technical acumen. In terms of extracurricular experiences, I functioned as a student tour organiser in the 1 st and 2 nd year of my Bachelor’s degree. This position helped me develop my leadership qualities and understanding of teamwork dynamics. I have also performed several drama acts related to mythological stories such as Ramayana and Mahabharata, which helped me develop my communication qualities and reduced my stage fear. I also engage in live sketching of landscapes and great monuments and historic structures, which has equipped me with creativity and detail-oriented nature. Additionally, I visit nature spaces such as hills, rivers, and forests and like to travel a lot which has evolved my thinking. Moreover, I also taught Biology and Physics in government schools during my holidays, which helped me present myself in the best way and speak in public confidently. I also engaged in volunteer work for the India 2020 mission and used to teach drawing to many high school kids, which instilled in me empathy and maturity. Having established a robust foundation for my career through a rewarding undergraduate program, I now aim to take a step forward through a Master’s course in Architecture at the renowned University of Portsmouth. Given the immense research potential and pervasive industrial applications of Architecture, I believe a postgraduate degree in the discipline would be the perfect stepping-stone for my career. Growing up in my grandparents’ 150-year-old house, I played the curious assistant to the supervisor, my Ipa (as I called my grandpa), every year during the maintenance works. I vividly remember him explaining once, how the wooden ceiling with an insulation of teak leaves kept the house safe from pests and also comfortably ambient throughout the year. This, I can remember, was one of the first instances of my fascination with the elements of the built environment. An amusement of hours then turned into a decade of obsession and now I want to quest deeper into exploring the dynamics of creating sensible and resilient designs. In retrospect, I believe it is my immediate surroundings that pushed me towards the field of design, and subconsciously developed my faculties of making choices as an architecture professional. My maternal roots from the south Indian state of Kerala led me to pursue studios practicing in that region for my internship. Working on restoration projects of colonial buildings, I was awed how the communications between the foreign Architect and local malayali craftsmen could transcend the barriers of language to create such timeless structures. It was enriching to learn the values of preservation and develop a sense of materials and aesthetics under my mentor, Ar. --- ---. In my Urban Design Studio, inspired by ---'s Barcelona superblock interventions, and the studies of morphological development of the city, building a ‘void’ made sense. Upholding the character of life in the streets of the old city, an open square as a celebration was my proposal. Through my research, I understood how the quality of life in a city is determined by its spatiality, and closely influenced the wellbeing of the citizens. I was also involved in a project with Retrofit Baroda, for an overnight revamping of a residual space under a flyover that accommodates an evening classroom for the less fortunate. The anticipation of the children coming back to their renewed classroom as a surprise was a feeling I always wish to go back to. This taught me about the responsibility architects hold as designers of the spatial environments and as eventual changemakers in the society. Experiences with the local craftsmen of Kerala and the communities of the old city of Vadodara, crystallized my belief in a bottom-up approach in design. This led the enquiry for my thesis project to be at the confluence of community, crafts and design. I found inspiration from a crafted rolling pin in my kitchen. It was an exquisite wooden product with a bright lacquer work, from the woodworking community of Sankheda village. As a part of my research, I visited the village and spent a few days with the artisans. Their way of life, and its adherence to their livelihoods taught me about the artisanal values of products we use in our daily lives, and how they are being lost. The catharsis of the research work emanated to a proposal of an ecomuseum- a unique mechanism for community engagement, where they participate as primary stakeholders fostering a culture of sustainable heritage preservation. This immersive experience reinforced my perspective of a Designer being a Leader, and the responsibility that comes with it. Working in the profession as an architect, I was introduced to the gap between academia and practice. Handling the requirements and managing the projects, I learnt my way around. It has taught me about resilience and endurance for the process of getting a work done. Five years of professional experience made me attentive towards the niche for architects as social entrepreneurs to bring in reforms. I now want to pursue an advanced degree that would help me further nurture my interest around urbanism and design. Moreover, I believe all our upcoming developments should be sustainable, and resilient to address the issues of climate change and of society. I want to build my professional and academic skills to be a contributor to this change. From a young age, I wanted to do a job that would satisfy me, challenge me, and bring me great joy. I put my efforts into making a big difference in this world by helping others. I have been a consistent performer in terms of my academics from a very young age. I always wanted to maintain a dynamic academic track record in every standard and work hard to be a top performer in class. After completing my senior secondary studies, I decided to pursue a Bachelor's degree in International Business. It was during this time that I learned about the various aspects and intricacies of the business domain. I got the opportunity to open my food stall as a part of an extracurricular activity, and understood the underlying nuances of this particular industry. Upon completing my UG program, I decided to address my interests in the field of interior design and development. My diploma in designing gave me a significant edge in this ever-evolving market and allowed me to develop the right set of technical skills. Hailing from a beautiful planned city, I was always exposed to superstructures or skyscrapers towering over humble brick dwellings. Frequent visits to metropolitan cities, additionally, endowed upon me with unexpected opportunities to catch a glimpse of towering high rises. This chance induced a hankering to learn more about the science behind such construction marvels. The materials and techniques employed behind such superstructures definitely demanded research from a grass root level. As part of my Projects, I have established a Housing studio. The housing studio was a turning point in my undergraduate study. It was halfway through my college and a completely different experience. During the first two years of my degree, the faculty had been very practical and all my design studios were focused only on the output and technical skills. We had a different set of faculties for our housing studio. We had two external faculties – established architects who we look up to. They helped change our perspective on architecture completely. They helped us understand that each design has a story and how architects are responsible in connecting the people to their buildings. It was a very unconventional studio. We prepared skits to perform in front of the class and took photographs of people to understand the user group and their needs. This showed us that the journey of the design is as important as the output. The second project was construction of an urban design. We had to redesign an entire commercial street and this was our first experience of its kind. I did my internship at Kingsway Consultants, Chennai for my practical training semester. This organization was familiar to me as my father works in a tie-up with them. Their organization designs the buildings for an institution where my father manages the construction. I had the opportunity to work on a couple of live projects such as Designing the interiors for a school administrative block, designing an outdoor cafeteria for a university. These projects helped me get an insight on proper usage of materials, color theory, user comfort, cost efficiency, etc. It also compelled me to learn new software and improve my digital skills. I look forward to working at a firm for a short period of time until I join the degree in Fall 2023. I would use this experience to improve my skill and knowledge to help me fulfill my graduate study with a better insight on the subject. Once I complete my master’s program, I wish to work for a few (4-5) years at a firm that is focused on sustainable design to gain experience. The long term goals include working with my father and turning our company into an architectural consultancy using my knowledge on the subject, work experience and his resources, contacts in the field. One of the fundamental pillars of human civilization is thought to be architecture. Everything has changed when man discovered how to build and construct. From the time that our ancestors were nomads to the present, architecture has been the key to the development of civilization. The thrill of creation is the only thing that can be more satisfying. An architect's constant drive to build something new, inventive, and distinctive stems from their creativity. Right from my childhood days, I got an opportunity to travel a lot. The more I travelled, the more I witnessed some of the amazing works of architecture. Gradually, I found interest in designing and planning and decided to pursue my career in this domain. My passion made me acquire a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture first and now I intend to explore further in this domain.
