The institute, originally known as Carleton College, was established in 1942 to assist returning World War II veterans. In 1952, the provincial government granted the institute university status, and in 1957 it adopted the name Carleton University. When compared to the university's rankings in 2018 (489), 2019 (483), and 2020 (483), the US News & World Report, which is exclusive to the US, has Carleton University ranked at 471 for 2021.
