Quick Read
- TUM’s estimated acceptance rate is 8-10%; no official figure is published.
- CS and Data Science admission rates often fall below 15%.
- Indian applicants need an APS certificate; processing takes 4-5 months.
- TUM Master’s fees for non-EU students reach Rs. 6.46 lakh per semester.
This article discusses the acceptance rate at the Technical University of Munich and what it means for an Indian applicant. It also talks about program-level competition benchmarks, the APS certificate timeline, the 2026–27 tuition fees in INR, and application deadlines. The QS World University Rankings 2026 put TUM at number 22 in the world. It is also Germany’s top technical university. By the end of this article, you’ll know if your profile is good enough for the program you want, your realistic first-year budget, and what to do next.
What is the Technical University of Munich Acceptance Rate for Indian Students?
TUM does not publish an official acceptance rate. The 8–10% figure circulating on education sites is a third-party estimate, not a TUM-released number. Here is what that means for your application.
- First, the truth is that TUM does not make its acceptance rate public. The university’s own admissions page discusses an aptitude test process rather than a fixed number of students eligible for admission. The 8-10% figure circulating on education sites is not an official number from TUM. It is a third-party estimate based on the number of applications and enrollments.
- Second, the process for getting into a German university is different from that of the US or UK. TUM’s official admissions procedures page says that most programs use a point-based aptitude test, also known as an Eignungsverfahren, or EFV. Your GPA, grades in specific subjects, how well your classes overlap, and your motivation all go into scoring your application. You will either be accepted right away, invited to a 20-minute interview or written test, or turned down, depending on how many points you have. There is no set limit on the number of seats in many programs; anyone who meets the requirements is accepted. So, the “acceptance rate” in those programs doesn’t depend on how many other applicants there are; it depends on whether your profile meets the standard.
- TUM had more than 52,000 students in the Winter Semester of 2025-26. About 45% of them were from outside of Germany. That international diversity is real, but it doesn’t make the academic bar lower.

Counselor insight: The 8–10% estimate is most useful for English-taught Master's programs in CS, Data Science, and Management, which have a lot of applicants from all over the world. If you have a good CGPA and have done well in school, you have a better chance of getting into programs with fewer applicants, like Life Sciences, Land Management, and Environmental Engineering. Do not use the university's overall number to judge a specific program.
TUM Acceptance Rate by Program: Where Indian Students Are Most and Least Competitive
The following table displays the expected ranges of acceptance and the most competitive scores for each program. Since TUM doesn't officially release program-level acceptance rates, these numbers come from enrollment data from a third party and counselor observations. Always review the program page at tum.de for the most up-to-date requirements.

TUM Acceptance Rate by Profile: Academic Benchmarks for Indian Applicants.
To change Indian grades to German grades, TUM uses the Modified Bavarian Formula. On the German scale, 1.0 is the best grade, and 4.0 is a pass. On a scale of 10 points, an Indian CGPA of about 8.5 usually equals a German grade of 1.8 to 2.0, which is satisfactory enough for most programs. A CGPA of 7.5 is equal to about 2.5, which is the lowest score needed to be seriously considered for competitive programs.
TUM also verifies your degree against the Anabin database and assesses the extent of its coverage. You might not get into your desired Master's program even if you have a high CGPA if your B.Tech. or BSc doesn't cover the required subjects. This is the step where you look at the curriculum. There is a form that you fill out to match up your Indian college credits with the modules that TUM needs. It is not a given.
The language requirements depend on the language used to teach the program. You need either an IELTS 6.5+ or a TOEFL iBT 88+ to get into programs taught in English. A Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate may be enough for TUM to accept your application instead of a test score if at least half of your undergraduate degree was taught in English. Find out how this works to study in Germany without IELTS. Verify your German skills with TestDaF 4x4 or DSH-2 (C1 level).
Decision Framework: Which Student Are You?
- If you are in your last year of BTech and will graduate in May or June 2026 with a CGPA of 8.5 or higher and have not yet started your APS certificate, your target intake is Winter 2026–27 (starting in October 2026), but the window is tight. You needed to start the APS process in November or December 2025 for a comfortable timeline because it takes 4–5 months. If you haven't already, please consider starting this week and applying to TUM at the same time using your provisional certificate. TUM's aptitude assessment procedures say that for some Master's programs, you can send in your final documents by the end of your second semester after you enroll. Call the office of the program you want to get into to make sure this option is available.
- If you graduated in 2024 or 2025 and have your degree in hand, a CGPA between 7.5 and 8.0, and one to two years of relevant work experience or internship history, you can look for Management and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or Finance and Information Management programs in Winter 2026-27. At TUM, work experience does not contribute to your GPA, but it is included in the "motivation" section of your points score for aptitude assessment interviews. Make sure that your curriculum analysis shows that the subjects are well-aligned.
- If you want to study Informatics, Data Engineering, or AI and your CGPA is below 8.0, TUM is a reach application. Add RWTH Aachen (which has a 10–15% acceptance rate for similar programs) and TU Berlin to your list. You might want to use the extra time to study for the GATE or GRE tests, which are important for TUM's point system for these programs. For a comparison of TUM's main peer institutions, see the best universities in Germany for Master's.
TUM Free for Indian Students in 2026-27: The Complete Fee Breakdown in INR
No is the short answer. Indian students can't use TUM for free anymore.
BayHIG, the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act, said that from the Winter Semester 2024–25, TUM had to start charging non-EU international students tuition fees. India is a third country, which means you have to pay these fees.

Application Deadlines for TUM 2026-27: What Indian Students Frequently Miss
Indian students who want to attend TUM often make the mistake of thinking that the July 15 Uni-assist deadline also applies to TUM Master's programs. It doesn't.
The most important dates for Winter Semester 2026–27 are:
- For most master's programs: The last day to apply is May 31, 2026. The window for applications opens on April 1, 2026, through TUMonline.
- Bachelor's programs: the last day to apply is July 15, 2026, through Uni-assist.
- Uni-assist VPD submission: TUM suggests sending your application to Uni-assist at least 6–8 weeks before the TUM deadline. For Master's applicants, this means April is the best time to do this.
From November 1, 2026, to November 30, 2026, most Master's programs will accept applications for the Summer Semester of 2027. About 40% of programs offer a summer start date, so make sure this is an option for your program before relying on it.
Counselor insight: Every year, a lot of Indian students get confused when they see the May 31 deadline for Master's programs. When their BTech exams are over in late April or early May, they think they have until July to apply, so they don't go to TUM at all. If TUM is on your list, you need to start applying in November of the previous year, not after the results.

Documents Indian Students Need for TUM: The APS Certificate Explained
An APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate is needed for every Indian student who wants to get into a German university and apply for a visa. You don't have to do this, and it's not part of the TUM application. However, TUM won't let you in without it, and the German embassy won't process your visa without it either.
How do I get an APS certificate?
The APS office in New Delhi checks that your Indian academic documents are real and changes your grades into a standard format that German universities can read. The DigiZert is the format used right now. Processing takes four to five months at the moment, which is why you need to start your APS application a long time before any TUM deadline.
| Document / Requirement | Details & Specifications | Required For |
|---|---|---|
| APS Certificate (DigiZert) | Apply via APS India (New Delhi). Submit Class 10, 12, and all semester marksheets. Fee: ₹18,000. Processing: 3–5 months. | Visa & Enrollment |
| VPD from Uni-assist | Preliminary review documentation. Submit at least 8 weeks before the TUM deadline. Fee: €75 (₹6,800) for 1st app; €30 (₹2,700) per additional. | TUM Application |
| Official Transcripts | All semester marksheets from your Indian university. Must be certified copies in English. | TUM Application |
| Degree Certificate | Final degree or a Provisional Certificate with expected graduation date if in your final year. | Application & Enrollment |
| Language Proficiency | IELTS: 6.5+ (some 7.0+) or TOEFL iBT: 88+. MOI certificates are accepted only if 50%+ of the degree was in English. | TUM Application |
| GRE / GMAT General | GRE: Required for Informatics, Data Engineering, AI, and Aerospace. GMAT (640+): Required for Management & Finance programs. | Program-specific |
| Curriculum Analysis | A TUM-specific form mapping your Indian credits to TUM modules. Crucial: Subject overlap is a major factor in admission. | TUM Application |
| Motivation Letter (SOP) | Must follow TUM’s Aptitude Assessment guidelines strictly. Generic SOPs often lead to rejection. | TUM Application |
| CV (Resume) | European format preferred. Maximum one page. Focus on research, internships, and technical skills. | TUM Application |
| Letters of Rec (LOR) | Usually, two academic references addressing technical and research independence. | Most programs |
| Blocked Account | Amount: €11,904 (~₹10.76 lakh) deposited to cover living expenses for one year. | Student Visa |
| Health Insurance | Confirmation of German statutory health insurance (e.g., TK, Barmer, or AOK). | Enrollment |
| Valid Passport | Self-attested copy. Must be valid for the entire expected duration of study. | Visa & Application |
Counselor insight: The APS interview in New Delhi isn't just a way to get documents. Applicants were asked to talk about their choice of German university, explain any gaps in their academic record, and explain any strange grades. Write a clear, logical story about your academic path before you go. When you give different versions of your transcript, it's easy for processing times to get backed up.

What to Do When Your TUM Application Goes Wrong
The due date for your APS certificate has passed
The problem that Indian applicants run into most often. If your APS isn't ready when you need to turn in your Uni-assist VPD, do the following:
Send proof of the date you sent in your APS to each university's admissions office. Programs that let you apply directly through TUMonline (rather than through Uni-assist routing) are more likely to be able to accept late APS documents. Without the certificate, Uni-Assist will not start to work. If the delay means that you won't be able to finish your Master's degree by May 31 and your certificate won't arrive in time, you might want to try for the Summer Semester 2027 (applications open November 2026) or the Winter Semester 2027–28. If you keep pushing a deadline that has already passed, applications that aren't complete will be rejected.
Your CGPA is lower than what is needed to get into your desired program
A CGPA between 7.5 and 8.0 does not automatically get you turned down from TUM for all programs, but it is a real disadvantage for programs like Informatics and Data Engineering that are in high demand. To make up for it, use the structure of the aptitude test: a strong curriculum analysis showing that your courses almost entirely overlap with TUM's required modules; a well-thought-out motivation letter that connects your research or internship projects to the course material; and reliable references that talk about your technical skills, not just your grades. Consider submitting simultaneous applications to both RWTH Aachen (where 10-15% of Engineering and CS applicants receive acceptance) and TU Berlin.
You fail the aptitude test (EFV) stage
TUM doesn't provide formal feedback on the results of aptitude tests. You can apply again during the next application cycle if you are turned down at Stage 2 (interview or written test). Before reapplying, please visit tum.de to review TUM's Aptitude Assessment statutes for your program once more. Misalignment between your motivation letter and the program's stated learning goals is a common reason why people fail. Another reason is not preparing enough for the 20-minute interview, which tests both your general ability and your motivation for the program.
You missed the Due Date for Master’s on May 31
The May 31 deadline has passed for Winter 2026–27. You can apply for either the Summer Semester 2027 (starting November 1, 2026, and ending November 30, 2026) or the Winter Semester 2027–28 (starting February 20, 2027). About 40% of TUM's Master's programs take applications for the summer term. Before committing to a Summer application cycle, make sure you know which program you want to apply to. Use the extra time to study to get a better GRE score, improve your curriculum analysis, and, if possible, add research or an internship to your CV.
Your visa to study in Germany was turned down
Since 2024, Indian consulates have turned down more German student visa applications because of problems with paperwork. The three most common reasons are: a blocked account certificate showing an amount less than €11,904, documents that are missing or not translated correctly, and an APS certificate that was not yet in digital DigiZert format when it was submitted. DAAD's official visa information says that the blocked account requirement is €992 per month and must be clearly available before the visa appointment. A refusal is not a permanent ban. Find the reason for your refusal in your letter, fix that one problem, and then reapply with a full file. If you got your refusal letter late and missed your enrollment deadline, call TUM's admissions office right away. They may be able to give you a conditional enrollment deferral. The German Embassy in India website says that German consulates in India now accept appointments through VFS Global's Germany visa portal. Do not send in your visa application until you have a blocked account certificate that shows the exact amount of €11,904, not an estimate.
Conclusion
- The May 31, 2026, deadline for TUM Winter 2026-27 has passed. This guide applies to Winter 2027-28 applicants. Start your APS by November 2026.
- Use Rs. 107.68 per euro to calculate your realistic budget. A Master's degree at TUM costs about Rs. 31–33 lakh in the first year. This includes tuition at average rates, living costs in Munich, and costs like APS, Uni-assist, and visa fees that you have to pay before you arrive. The idea that Germany is "almost free" no longer applies to TUM. Prepare a spending plan that takes into account the difference between the monthly release from the blocked account (Rs. 1.07 lakh) and the real cost of living in Munich (Rs. 1.29 lakh to Rs. 1.72 lakh per month).
- Please refer to TUM’s official website for the exact requirements for your program, rather than relying on a third-party site. The 8–10% acceptance rate is a third-party estimate for the whole university. The standards for your program may be much stricter or less strict. Before you write a word of your motivation letter, make sure you have downloaded the aptitude assessment law for the program you want to apply to, checked to see if the GRE or GMAT is required, and matched your course requirements to TUM's module requirements.

FAQs
-
What is the number of Indian students who get into TUM?
TUM doesn't give out a separate rate of acceptance for Indian students. Based on enrollment and application volume data gathered by third-party sites, the university-wide estimate of 8–10% is true for all nationalities. The actual rate is thought to be less than 15% for Master's programs taught in English that are in high demand in CS, Data Engineering, and Management. Your chances depend on your CGPA, how well you do on TUM's aptitude test, how much of your classes overlap, and how well you do in languages.
-
Does TUM publish an official acceptance rate?
No, TUM's admissions pages on tum.de talk about an aptitude test based on criteria, not a set number of spots or a public acceptance rate. TUM does not report Common Data Set numbers as US universities do. The 8–10% number comes from a third party. When it comes to many programs, there is no hard seat cap. Anyone who meets the requirements is accepted.
-
Which CGPA do I need to get into Master's programs at TUM?
For competitive programs, a CGPA between 8.0 and 8.5 on a scale of 10 is a good average. At least an 8.5 in AI, data science, and informatics is what you should aim for. For applications in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Finance, Information Management, and others, 8.0 is the lowest level that can work. It is possible to get into a less competitive program with a CGPA of 7.5 if your curriculum analysis shows that a lot of your classes overlap, and your motivation letter is tailored to the program. In most programs, TUM is not likely to be below 7.5.
-
Does TUM need Indian students to take the GRE?
Some programs need the GRE, but not all of them do. Indian students who want to apply to programs like Aerospace Engineering, Informatics, and Data Engineering and Analytics must show GRE General Test scores, according to TUM's page with special rules for some countries. You can't use the GRE Subject Test. Indian college graduates who want to apply to Management and Technology or Finance and Information Management must have a GMAT score of 640 or higher. Most engineering programs, like Mechanical Engineering, don't require the GRE, but check the page for each program to be sure.
-
What about Indian students in 2026–27? Is TUM free for them?
EU students have had to pay tuition at TUM since the Winter Semester 2024–25. This is because of the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act. Each semester costs between Rs. 4.31 lakh and Rs. 6.46 lakh, which is about €4,000 and €6,000. That's between Rs. 8.62 lakh and Rs. 12.92 lakh per year. The cost of a bachelor's degree is between Rs. 2.15 lakh and Rs. 3.23 lakh per semester. Some programs still don't charge fees; you can see the current list of programs on tum.de.
-
How long does it take to get an APS certificate?
The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate ensures that Indian academic documents are genuine, so they can be used to get into a German university and obtain a student visa. It comes from the APS India office in New Delhi. You pay the application fee, send in your Class 10 and 12 transcripts, and all of your university semester grades. If called, you also have to go to a short verification interview and get a digital DigiZert. The processing time right now is four to five months. Start as soon as you can. The certificate is needed for both getting a visa and enrolling in TUM. Indian students often miss their application cycles because of delays in getting this certificate.
