Located in Melbourne, Victoria, Victoria University is a public research and dual-sector tertiary institution founded in 1916. Approximately 40,000 students are enrolled in training, vocational education and degree courses across six colleges. The university comprises VU College, Victoria University Business School, School for the Visitor Economy, First Year College and School for Transport Systems & Civic Infrastructure. Some of the courses offered include Youth Work, Sports Management, Psychological Studies, Nursing and Business Administration. There are eleven Victoria University campuses, to name a few, the City Flinders campus, City Queen campus, City King campus and City Flinders Lane campuses. The Victoria University library system consists of eight branches across each campus, housing printed/e-resources, archives, collections, study spaces and computers. Through Victoria University Online, students can pursue numerous undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate courses from home. Pathway courses (Law, Business, Education, Arts etc.) allow students to transition between different levels, as do the 13-week foundation courses. Some of the short courses (for skill development) provided by the university include professional and personal development courses, job-ready courses and single units of study. Scholarships, grants, bursaries, awards and loans are available as financial aid like the Higher Education Loan Program, VU Alumni Discount, Australia Awards fellowships, Indigenous Commonwealth scholarships etc. Student housing is provided by VU Student Accommodation which has 500 beds in the studio and shared apartments. Other options are share houses, private rentals, subsidized housing, homestays etc. Several cultural, academic, political, spiritual and community clubs are run by VU students like the Afro Society, Multicultural Club, Midwifery Society, VU Business Society and Planetuni VU. There are many sports clubs involved in hockey, rowing, taido, water polo and others. Fitness and sports facilities include the St Albans Health and Fitness, Footscray Park Aquatic & Fitness Centre, Victoria University Community Sports Stadium and Footscray Nicholson Recreation Centre.

What are the requirements for participation?


The following are the minimal program-specific eligibility requirements that overseas applicants must achieve before applying to Victoria University:

Eligibility Requirements for Undergraduates —

The criteria for undergraduate programmes are further separated into two portions, with eligibility for basic education and English proficiency differing for each:

  • Certificates, diplomas, and advanced diplomas are the first three levels of education.

Basic Instruction:

Each certificate and diploma course has its own set of requirements (students need to check this on the dedicated course page on the university website)

Proficiency in English (either):

  • Academic IELTS: a minimum of 5.5 bands overall (no less than 5 in each section)
  • TOEFL: An aggregate score of 55 is required (Listening: 9, Speaking: 16, Reading: 10, Writing: 18)
  • PTE Academic: An total score of 42-49 is required (with no section score less than 40)
  • Advanced (CAE) at the University of Cambridge requires a minimum score of 162 overall (no less than 154 in individual section)
  • Achieved in VU English - English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (Level 4)

Bachelor's Degrees 

Basic Instruction:

  • Grade 12 in relevant discipline equivalent to an Australian Year 12 certificate

Proficiency in English (either):

  • Academic IELTS: Minimum of 6 bands overall (no less than 6 in each section)
  • TOEFL: An aggregate score of 67 is required (Listening: 12, Speaking: 18, Reading: 15, Writing: 21)
  • PTE Academic: A minimum total score of 50-67 is required (with no section score less than 50)
  • CAE: Minimum total score of 169 (no less than 169 in individual section)
     
  • Achieved VU English – EAP (Level 5)

 

Admission Process

What is the procedure for submitting an application? Is there a round of interviews involved?


There are two ways to apply to all of Victoria University's programmes:

  • At eaams.vu.edu.au/BrowseAgents.aspx, you can find an agent to help you with the application process.
  • Self-apply at eaams.vu.edu.au/portal/SelfRegisterWithApplication.aspx, the university's online application site.

Both of these options are available to international students.

Applications for all programmes (excluding PhD) —

Those planning to apply on their own should follow the guidelines below:

Step 1: Go to the university's application portal and fill out an application.
Step 2: Select 'International' as the application type and your home country.
Step 3: Determine the application's desired course of action as well as the preferred intake.
Step 4: Fill in your personal information.
Step 5: Add appropriate papers to your account.
Step 6: Make a payment for the application cost.
Step 7: Review the application and submit it.

After that, you must wait for the results.

Application for a PhD —

To apply to VU for research, applicants must complete the following six steps:

Step 1: Decide on a study level that is appropriate for you.
Step 2: Make sure you're eligible for the programme you're interested in.
Step 3: Choose a high-priority Field of Research (FoR) code and a supervisor.
Step four is to write a research proposal.
Step 5: Fill out the application and submit it.
Step 6: Await enrolling and the start of classes.

Off-campus housing is available.

  • There are single, double, and triple room apartments as well as dorm style rooms for 5 or 6 people to share.
  • Room rentals range from $250 to $400 per week on average.
  • Laundry, internet, a shared kitchen, and 24-hour security are all available to residents.
  • The rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV, a mini-fridge, and a microwave.
