Following are the cut-offs for top Canadian Universities for undergraduate programs:

  • University of Toronto: With a QS World Rank of 25, the University of Toronto has a TOEFL cutoff of 89-100.
  • University of British Columbia: The 45th university of the world requires a TOEFL score of at least 90.
  • McGill University: The TOEFL requirement of 31st QS World Ranking university ranges between 79 to 100.
  • University of Alberta: Undergraduate programs at this university require a minimum TOEFL score of 90.
  • University of Calgary: The educational institution with many attractive study programs asks applicants for a TOEFL score between 80 to 108 depending on the choice of major.
  • University of Ottawa: Situated in Ontario, applicants must score between 86 to 96 for admission at the University of Ottawa.

The requirement for every program is different. For the best results, students must prepare a list of target institutions like above and compare the TOEFL scores of the programs of their choice. Once the final list is ready, the highest cut-off score is your target.

TOEFL Canada Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2022

The exam is divided into four sections: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Each unit has a 30 marks weightage forming a total score of 120. Following is the exam pattern breakup for 2022:

  • Reading: There will be 30-40 questions in this section. Ideally, you should spend 50-70 minutes on this section.
  • Listening: There will be 30-40 questions which should take more than 50 minutes of your time.
  • Speaking: The section is relatively simple, with 4 questions requiring 20 minutes at max.
  • Writing: The section has only 2 questions but consumes as much as 50 minutes of your test time.

You mustn’t invest a lot of time in any section. The goal must be to get an acceptable cumulative score. Here is the exam syllabus for the best scores:

  • Reading Syllabus: The reading section consists of 3-4 paragraph-based sub-section with 10 questions for every passage.
  • Listening Syllabus: The exam’s listening section presents candidates with voice notes from lectures and conversations to test their ability to understand and engage with their faculty and peers. You may expect 3-4 lectures with 6 questions each and 2-3 conversations with 5 questions each.
  • Speaking Syllabus: Speaking section of the exam consists of 1 independent task where you have to talk about a topic of your choice, 3 integrated tasks where you must listen/read and paraphrase what you hear.
  • Writing Syllabus: The writing section is a crucial one. To pass this section, a candidate must complete 1 integrated task of reading/listening and then writing in your own words, 1 independent task where you are asked to write on a topic of your choice.

Latest Updates for TOEFL 2022

As we navigate the unchartered waters of the COVID pandemic, the TOEFL landscape is evolving to suit the needs of applicants. Here are the latest changes to the exam:

  • To increase the accessibility of TOEFL, ETS has resumed the paper-delivered format from December 11, 2021.
  • The examination fees have been increased from $185 to $190.
  • Accommodating the lack of passport issuing, the ETS has temporarily started accepting Adhaar-Card as valid ID proof.
  • On August 21, 2021, ETS launched TOEFL essentials to cater to the limitation of the conventional extended format test.

For most courses, a TOEFL score of above 80 is more than enough to get an admission.
