I grew up in a farm during my childhood so I would say I know a lot about crops. Not only I wanted to, I had an interest in agriculture but also wanted to pursue Bachelor of Agriculture Sciences after my pre-university college. So I think I have a fair share of knowledge about crops. The particular crop I'm very fond of is banana. It is a perennial crop. There are many advantages and disadvantages when you venture on growing banana. Firstly I would say as it is a perennial crop it takes one year to give the profits and secondly it requires large amount of labor and workers to work on it to care the plants throughout the year. On the contrary there are many advantages when it comes to growing banana as a crop. It is more stability in case of crops that are grown for a short duration like tomato or chili that we tried. We often had substantial loss because of rain or because of not getting a better rate for what we have grown but banana is always a secure crop where we definitely gonna get a profit but it takes a very long duration. We have around six acres of land where we try to grow various crops together because of the availability of nitrogen. Some plants give out nitrogen to the soil but banana consumes lot of nitrogen. So I would say mixed cropping is better for banana.

Follow up questions

What are some challenges you faced while growing bananas?
One of the main challenges is the labor-intensive nature of banana farming. It requires constant care and attention throughout the year. Additionally, weather conditions can impact the crop yield, and pests can also pose a threat to the health of the plants.

How does mixed cropping benefit banana cultivation?
Mixed cropping helps in maintaining soil health and fertility. Some plants can fix nitrogen in the soil, which is beneficial for banana plants that require a lot of nitrogen. This practice can also reduce the risk of pest infestations and improve overall crop yield.

What other crops do you grow alongside bananas?
We grow a variety of crops such as tomatoes and chilies, which are short-duration crops. This allows us to maximize the use of our land and resources. However, we have to be cautious about the potential losses from these crops due to their vulnerability to weather changes.

That's a great question. Especially in modern times, people don't usually ponder about the crops which they use. They just buy it from the supermarkets and make dishes out of it. So, I'll start with a top to bottom approach. That is culturally speaking, flat breads like roti and naan are of staple diet in India. I come from a western region called state from Gujarat. So, the crop which we use for making roti is of course wheat. The major thing about this is it contains a lot of protein. However, there is also one more crop that I usually have it on my dish. That is rice and sometimes millets which are more nutritious compared to wheat. That would be a disadvantage for that crop. Additionally, wheat is also not gluten free. It has to be processed in a manner so that it becomes gluten free.

Wheat cultivation varies across India due to climate and soil conditions. In Gujarat, the climate is suitable for wheat, while in other regions like Punjab, the practices may differ due to irrigation and crop rotation methods, impacting yield and quality.

What are some traditional dishes made from wheat in your culture?
In my culture, traditional dishes like roti and naan are made from wheat. These flatbreads are often served with various curries and vegetables, making them a staple in Indian meals. They are versatile and can be enjoyed with different types of cuisine.

So in India, the agriculture is a quite common occupation for a lot of farmers. So I am familiar with plenty of crops like jowar, bajra and mustard seeds, etc. I used to visit my maternal grandparents every year during the summer vacation. So that's why I came to know about the farming more as my grandfather is a farmer and he is into agriculture. He often grows the crop of jowar. It is a really common crop to be grown in my village. So I've seen how it is sowed and how the process continues to grow this crop. It was quite fascinating to see at the first time. Jowar is the crop which is often used in Maharashtrian families for daily purposes, daily food. Personally, I am not that fond of this crop as I am a rice person, but if it is made with the stuffed vegetables and in the form of parathas, I prefer having it. This crop has a lot of carbs that can keep you full throughout the day and provide you the necessary energy to sustain throughout.

The crop that I am familiar with is known as black chickpeas. They are nothing but chickpeas but are smaller and black in color. I got to know about them is because my family owns a lot of farmland in my village and they grow it in the winter season and harvest it in the start of the summer. It starts out as a small green plant and grows up to be big or half of a human size plant. While it is green, the chickpeas are green in color and soft in texture as well. My mother likes to make vegetables out of the smaller plants or the leaves itself. While it grows up and becomes a bigger plant having green chickpeas, my mom loves to cook that as well. She cooks it with potatoes and we eat it with roti. The reason why I like this crop is because I love the vegetable that is made with the green chickpeas but the reason why I abhor it is I get to eat it too frequently because it is grown in our fields only. The reason why it is really important for my country to grow black chickpeas is it helps in our country's economy by exporting it in other countries and also by providing it as an option for food for other populations as well.

Today I am going to speak about one of the crops that are very important for the economy of my country, Sudan, which is the sesame seeds. Sesame is well known for its various beneficial and useful uses. These include but not limited to the production of oil, nutritional products and some medicines. Sudan is one of the few countries that are famous for the production of large quantities of this crop and it is one of the cornerstones of Sudanese imports. What I like in sesame is that, as I have mentioned earlier, that it is of different uses. The disadvantages or drawbacks include the difficulty in finding suitable agricultural lands for it and also the cost associated with its production. I hope that in the future my government will pay more attention towards this important sector.

Well, the one crop that I am very familiar with is, it's called coriander. Coriander is basically a leaf-like structure crop which is used in curries to garnish it. So it is basically used more in India rather than any other country. So this is the one crop that I am very familiar with. It is because since my childhood I have been seeing over this crop being added to many dishes that were prepared at my home. Initially I was, in my childhood, initially I never liked its taste and its fragrance so I avoided eating it. But then when I grew up, in my teenage, I started being very fond with it. I loved its color, the way it grew. So I started to know more about it and gradually I found how to cultivate it, how to harvest it, in what kind of climatic condition can it grow better and all of that. And lastly I got fond of it and oftenly I am now harvesting these crops. I have a mini garden where most of the places cover with species of coriander. There are multiple species of coriander like there can be huge leaves, small leaves, change in the color and etc. etc. So I am really fond of this crop. I have now prepared a way of using it differently. I have learnt how to make chutney with the coriander using lemon and other masalas and spices that Indian household use.

So we should always know the importance of farmers and we should respect them. I respect my father a lot. I live in a village and we usually go to our farms and there I see a lot of crops. The one crop I am very familiar with is rice crop. You can say it is like when it comes it feels like my father treats the crops like their child.
