On November 21, University College London (UCL) introduced an exciting scholarship initiative aiming to facilitate the educational journey of 100 talented students from India. The recently launched UCL India Excellence Scholarships are set to grant 33 scholarships for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year, exclusively for outstanding students with a first-class degree or those on the path to achieving it. Additionally, 67 more scholarships will be conferred in the subsequent two years. This groundbreaking initiative offers prospective Master’s students in any field an opportunity to receive £5,000 towards their academic pursuits, marking a significant stride in fostering academic excellence and collaboration.

Available to: Prospective postgraduate taught students
Selection criteria: Bachelor’s degree GPA and NIRF ranking of current/previous institution of study
Eligible fee status: Overseas
Eligible programmes: All postgraduate taught (excluding distance learning programmes)
Deadline: 5 pm BST, Thursday 26 February 2026

Candidates must fulfil all of the following criteria:

• Overseas fee rate applicable.
• Permanent domicile in India.
• have a bachelor’s degree, or be enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree, from an institution listed in the Top 100 of the Government of India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF );
• Have a GPA in their bachelor’s degree that is equivalent to a UK first-class degree;
• Submission of a complete admission application for a full-time Master’s degree at UCL in 2026/27 by February 26, 2026.
• Note: Distance-learning options are not eligible; students must attend UCL in person

• Up to 33 (thirty-three) scholarships available in 2026/27. 
• The value of the bursary is £5,000. 
• The scholarship is tenable for one year unless the full-time programme is 2yrs in length. The scholarship will be paid 50% of each year in that case.
• The UCL India Excellence Scholarship may be held alongside other scholarships, studentships, awards, or bursaries. The amount of the UCL award may be adjusted depending on the total value of other funds received by the student.
• Scholarship recipients must inform the UCL Student Funding Office immediately of any other funding they are awarded towards their UCL Master’s degree studies before or after the UCL India Excellence Scholarship is awarded.
• Applied first to tuition fees, with any remainder disbursed in three equal instalments for maintenance.

• Awarded based on academic achievement.
• Shortlisting considers the final or current GPA from their bachelor’s degree and the NIRF ranking of the institution.
• Final selection will be made with reference to information supplied in the application for a full-time Master’s degree at UCL in 2026/27.

Check Your NIRF Ranking: Ensure your current or past college is in the NIRF Top 100. This is a non-negotiable requirement for the India Excellence award. Don’t assume, verify it officially.

Finalize Your GPA: If you’re still in your final year, every decimal point matters. Aim for that “First Class” bracket to stay competitive. Those last-semester grades? They count.

Submit Early: The deadline is February 26, 2026, but UCL often operates on a rolling basis for many courses. Getting your application in by December 2025 or January 2026 gives you peace of mind and ensures all your references are uploaded on time. Don’t wait until the last week.

The Personal Statement: While the scholarship is merit-based, a strong Statement of Purpose (SOP) ensures you get the initial “Offer of Admission” required to be considered for the funding. You can’t win a scholarship without first getting accepted.

Successful candidates for 2026/27 will be notified in April and June 2026.
