Counselor insight: The visa maintenance requirement is the number that Indian families consistently underestimate, not tuition. In November 2025, the UK government updated its regulations to require that individuals studying in London demonstrate £1,529 per month for up to nine months (a total of ₹17,22,803) or £1,171 per month for nine months outside of London (a total of ₹13,20,028). Before submitting your visa application, this money must remain in your bank account for a period of 28 consecutive days. It is not utilised to obtain the visa; rather, it serves as evidence of financial resources. However, it must be unencumbered and liquid. This requirement catches families who have structured their finances exclusively around tuition off guard.
MS Tuition Fees in UK by Subject: What You Actually Pay in 2026-27
In the UK, tuition fees for international MS students are set by each university and not controlled by the government, like fees for undergraduates are. The range is big and based on topics.
Tuition Fee Ranges by Subject
| Subject Area | Annual Tuition (GBP) | INR Equivalent (Current Rate) |
|---|---|---|
| Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences | £9,000 – £20,000 | ₹11.30 L – ₹25.12 L |
| STEM (Non-lab: CS, Data Science, Maths) | £15,000 – £25,000 | ₹18.84 L – ₹31.39 L |
| STEM (Lab-based: Engineering, Biomedical) | £20,000 – £32,000 | ₹25.12 L – ₹40.18 L |
| Business Analytics, Finance, Economics | £20,000 – £30,000 | ₹25.12 L – ₹37.67 L |
| MBA / Business Management | £25,000 – £36,000+ | ₹31.39 L – ₹45.21 L+ |
Some real examples from university fee pages for 2026-27: The University of Sussex charges £22,575 for international postgraduate programs that don't involve lab work. The University of Nottingham and the University of Manchester both list course fees on their program pages. This is because fees vary from course to course, even at the same university.
One intriguing fact is that a master's degree in the UK usually takes one year, while in the US or Australia it takes two years. If an Indian student pays Rs.25 lakh a year for tuition, that's about half as much as they would pay for the same program in the US at the same tuition rate.
Counselor insight: The QS rankings help most Indian students narrow down their choices of universities. They then look at the fees. This method always ends in sticker shock. Setting a tuition cap first, like Rs.22 lakh (£17,500), and then narrowing down universities and programs within that range is a better way to go about it. There are a number of well-known STEM master's programs in cities like Sheffield, Nottingham, Birmingham, and Cardiff that are part of the Russell Group. Some employers care if an MS is from Sheffield or Nottingham, but most don't.
Cost of Living in UK for Indian MS Students: London vs Other Cities
The cost of living is the most variable cost and the second most expensive thing after tuition.
As of November 2025, the UK government's official student visa guidance says that the minimum monthly maintenance need is £1,529 in London and £1,171 elsewhere. These are the minimum requirements you must demonstrate to obtain your visa. Usually, your actual spending will be more or less than these numbers.
City-to-City Monthly Living Cost for Indian Students
| City | Monthly Budget (GBP) | Monthly Budget (INR) | Annual Total (12 Months - INR) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London | £1,529 – £1,800 | ₹1.92 L – ₹2.26 L | ₹23.05 L – ₹27.12 L | Rent is the dominant expense; highest transport costs. |
| Edinburgh | £1,000 – £1,300 | ₹1.26 L – ₹1.63 L | ₹15.07 L – ₹19.59 L | High demand for housing; premium Scottish capital living. |
| Manchester | £950 – £1,200 | ₹1.19 L – ₹1.51 L | ₹14.32 L – ₹18.08 L | Massive Indian student community; great social life. |
| Glasgow | £900 – £1,150 | ₹1.13 L – ₹1.44 L | ₹13.56 L – ₹17.33 L | Affordable; rapidly growing tech and healthcare sectors. |
| Birmingham | £900 – £1,150 | ₹1.13 L – ₹1.44 L | ₹13.56 L – ₹17.33 L | Central location; excellent value for a major city. |
| Nottingham | £850 – £1,100 | ₹1.07 L – ₹1.38 L | ₹12.81 L – ₹16.58 L | Consistently ranked as a top "value" student city. |
| Sheffield | £800 – £1,050 | ₹1.00 L – ₹1.32 L | ₹12.05 L – ₹15.82 L | Very low cost of living; friendly, student-centric vibe. |
The Office for National Statistics says that the average private rent in the UK in September 2025 was £1,354. This is 5.5% more than the same month last year. That amount is about £2,284 a month in London. Most Indian students find that living in shared housing or university halls makes the cost of living a lot less of a problem.
People with a UK student visa can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during the holidays. At an average rate of £11 to £13 an hour, such work can bring in Rs.1.5 lakh to Rs.2.5 lakh per month, but it shouldn't be your main source of income.
Counselor insight: What Indian students don't often compare is an MS in Computer Science from Manchester or Edinburgh to one from London Metropolitan or the University of East London in the same field. Over a year, living costs are Rs.5 lakh to Rs.8 lakh higher for the first group. The comparison is with Manchester vs. King's or UCL, where the cost difference is similar but the reputational difference is much smaller. Students who go to reputable universities outside of London and do internships or part-time jobs in London while they are there often build networks that are just as useful but cost a lot less.
Mandatory Costs Beyond Tuition: Every Fee an Indian Student Must Budget
One number that everyone plans their life around is rent or school fees. These are the costs that show up after you accept an offer. If you don't plan for them ahead of time, they can throw off a successful financial plan.
Full Cost Checklist for Indian Students Applying for MS in UK

| Initial Setup Costs | £300 – £600 | ₹37,659 – ₹75,318 | Bedding, kitchenware, and first month's SIM/groceries. |
Pay close attention to the IHS figure. The UK government's IHS calculator figures out the cost of a one-year master's degree based on the length of the visa, not the length of the course. People who get their master's from September to September usually get a 17-month visa (1 month before the course, 12 months during the course, and 4 months after the course). For a total of £1,164 (₹1,45,873), that's £776 for the first year plus £388 for the extra five months. All of these fees have to be paid at once when you apply for your visa. It can't be paid for in parts.
The other important thing to keep in mind is the 28-day maintenance fund rule, which was established by UKVI in November 2025. This rule says that the necessary funds must show up on your bank statement for 28 days in a row, ending no more than 31 days before the date your visa application is sent in. This is not real money that is spent; it is just asked for as proof of funds. Any drop in the balance below the required amount in those 28 days can cause the visa to be denied.
Scholarships for Indian Students Doing MS in UK: What Is Actually Available
There aren't as many scholarships for Indian MS students in the UK as most sites say, but the ones that exist are real and should be pursued.
Scholarship for Chevening
The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK pays for the whole Chevening Scholarship. It pays for all of your tuition at any eligible UK university, as well as your monthly living costs, round-trip flights, and visa fees. This is the best scholarship for Indian students to get a master's degree in the UK.
Important qualifications: Indian citizenship, at least 2,800 hours of work experience after graduation (about two years of full-time work), and a bachelor's degree that is the same as a UK upper second-class (2:1) are all requirements. You have to send your application to three different universities in the UK. The 2026–27 cycle began in August 2025 and ended on October 7, 2025. Around August 2026, the 2027–28 cycle will begin. Applications and university offers happen at the same time. You don't need an offer before you apply, but by July 9, 2026, you must have an unconditional offer from at least one university to move forward.
Before you apply to Chevening, make sure you have already accepted a place at a university. They must run at the same time. People who wait for an offer before looking at Chevening will always fall behind.
GREAT Scholarship (British Council)
The costs of the program are contributed to by the GREAT Britain Campaign of the UK government, the British Council, and the participating universities. Indian students can apply for 12 scholarships for 2026–27. Each one is worth at least £10,000 (₹12.53 lakh) and can be used to pay for a one-year postgraduate course. Universities like Anglia Ruskin University, the University of Bristol, Queen's University Belfast, the University of Dundee, and others will be part of the India stream in 2026–27. The list of universities in the British Council changes every year, so visit their page to see the most up-to-date version.
GREAT Scholarships only lower the cost of college; they don't pay for living expenses. Different schools have different application deadlines, but for September entry, most fall between January and March.
University Merit Scholarships
Almost every university in the UK gives scholarships to international postgraduate students who do very well on tests. These usually range from £2,000 to £10,000, which is ₹2.51 lakh to ₹12.53 lakh, and you can get them automatically or by applying with your program offer. They don't get a lot of publicity. Not only the program page, but also the international scholarships page of every school you apply to.
Counselor insight: The GREAT Scholarship deadline varies by school, but for September entry, it's usually between January and March. In other words, you can apply for GREAT even if you already have an offer with conditions. The best students who stack scholarships are those who apply to their top universities in October, get conditional offers by December, and then check right away to see if they are GREAT eligible for those universities. Students who believe they must obtain scholarships before applying to a program are the ones who miss out.
Is MS in UK Worth the Cost? The Post-Study Work Reality in 2026-27
The Graduate Route allows you to stay and work in the UK for two years after graduation without an employer sponsor, making it the most financially sound way to get an MS in the UK. That route is still there, but it is changing, and Indian students who are applying now need to know what they are getting.
- If you start in September 2026 and apply for the Graduate Route before January 2027: This is your current job: With the Graduate Route visa, master's degree holders can work freely in the UK for two years. There is no need for an employer to sponsor. You can be self-employed, work in any field, and have any level of skill. You can also freely switch jobs.
- What's coming up: A report from the House of Commons Library in October 2025, called Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, says that the Graduate Route will be cut from two years to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates who apply on or after January 1, 2027. PhD graduates stay for three years.
- This means for a student who starts in September 2026: About September 2027, you'll finish your MS. At that point, the application deadline for the Graduate Route is after January 1, 2027. You will receive 18 months instead of 2 years. It does not affect PhD students.
- Once the graduate route is over: The next type of visa is the Skilled Worker Visa. To get this visa, you need a job offer from a licensed employer that pays at least a certain amount. In the UK, graduates usually start out making between £25,000 and £35,000 a year, which is about ₹31.33 lakh to ₹43.86 lakh. As of 2025, the minimum salary for a Skilled Worker is £38,700 per year for most jobs. For jobs in shortage occupations, the minimum salary is lower. It is possible to obtain sponsorship as a skilled worker within 18 months, but you have to start actively looking for work in Month 1 of the Graduate Route, not Month 12.
Counselor insight: Eighteen months is a shorter window than two years, and that matters if your target sector is competitive. The question to ask is whether your shortlisted employers appear on the UK Register of Licensed Sponsors. If ten of your target fifteen companies sponsor Skilled Worker Visas, the 18-month Graduate Route is workable. If only two do, it would be beneficial to extend your target list before you arrive.
Decision Framework: Which Budget Makes Sense for Your Situation
Situation 1: You are a final-year engineering student graduating from an Indian college in June 2026, with a total family budget of ₹35 lakh to ₹45 lakh for the entire MS
This budget works for universities outside of London. Your goal for tuition is between £15,000 and £20,000, which is about Rs.18.80 lakh and Rs.25.06 lakh. The University of Sheffield, the University of Nottingham, the University of Birmingham, Queen's University Belfast, and the University of Glasgow are all excellent options at this price point. All of them are well-known in engineering and other STEM fields.
It costs between ₹13 lakh and ₹16 lakh a year to live somewhere apart from London, plus another ₹2.15 lakh for the visa and IHS and another ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh for setting up and flights. ₹35 lakh to Rs.46 lakh altogether. The total is doable.
You can apply for GREAT Scholarships at the universities you've chosen (deadlines are January to March 2026 for September 2026 entry). With a £10,000 award, your tuition costs drop by ₹12.53 lakh, putting the whole thing well within your budget. Before you apply for a visa, you must show that you have £10,539 (₹13.20 lakh) in maintenance funds for 28 days in a row.
Situation 2: You are planning an MS in Computer Science or Data Science to get a tech job in London after graduation
The tuition for a well-known university in London (UCL, King's, City, or Queen Mary) MS in CS ranges from £25,000 to £32,000, or ₹31.33 lakh to ₹40.10 lakh. It costs between ₹55 lakh and ₹70 lakh to live in London for a year, which is between ₹22 lakh and ₹27 lakh. The visa and IHS costs another ₹2.15 lakh.
Before you decide to live in London, you should find out if the companies you want to work for require a degree from a London university or from any top UK university. Most big tech companies in London are eager to hire people from Manchester, Edinburgh, Sheffield, and Warwick, as well as from London. If the employer list on the graduate hire page for your target company includes universities other than London, a CS MS from Manchester or Edinburgh will get you the same job for ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh less.
Plan to show £13,761 (₹17.24 lakh) in maintenance funds for 28 days if London is critical for your target sector (finance, media, or certain startups).
Situation 3: You are a working professional in India with 3 to 5 years of experience, considering an MS in Management or Business Analytics in the UK
At universities in the UK, an MS in Management costs between £25,000 and £36,000, which is about ₹31.33 lakh to ₹45.12 lakh. That's between ₹48 lakh and Rs.75 lakh, depending on the city, when you add up the cost of living. For a one-year program, this is a big investment.
For this group, the real comparison is not just UK vs. USA, but UK MS vs. Indian MBA. ISB PGP (₹40 lakh+), IIM-A/B/C PGP (₹25-30 lakh), and XLRI (₹25 lakh+) all cost less and let you stay in the Indian job market without needing a visa. The UK MS makes a lot of financial sense if you plan to work in the UK or Europe for at least three to five years after graduation, not just for two years.
For management programs in the UK, you might want to look at Warwick Business School, the University of Bath, the University of Manchester, and the University of Edinburgh. These are excellent at getting jobs and cost Rs.5 lakh to Rs.12 lakh less than their London counterparts.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong
If your visa is denied because you don't have enough money: The full amount has to stay in your account all the time under the 28-day maintenance rule that started in November 2025. It only takes one day below the threshold to get turned down. If you are turned down, please request a review with updated bank statements that clearly demonstrate 28 days. Do not send in the same documents again right away. The normal fee for reapplication is still due. Before you reapply, visit gov.uk/student-visa to see what the exact requirements are right now.
What to do if your IELTS score is lower than what the university needs: Most universities in the UK will accept IELTS scores from the last two years. Retest as soon as possible; popular test dates book up 4 to 6 weeks ahead of time. Before assuming a rejection, inquire with the admissions office about universities that offer conditional admission through an English language pathway program. Some universities also accept PTE Academic as an alternative. Some students find it easier to study for and take less time.
If you miss the GREAT Scholarship deadline at the university you want to attend: Don't worry. GREAT deadlines are different for each school, and some are as early as January. Please verify to see if any of the other universities on the GREAT India list offer your subject if you miss the deadline for one. The British Council page has a list of all the institutions that are taking part. If you need to take a year off, you can apply for the next cycle.
If the deadline for your tuition deposit has passed and you still don't have the money: Don't wait until the last minute to contact the university's international admissions office. Most universities have dealt with this situation before and can give a short extension if asked for quickly and with a good reason. It's difficult to get back a slot that has already been given away.
If your university tells the Home Office that you finished your course after your Student Visa has run out: Don't apply for the Graduate Route until your university has told the Home Office that you have finished your studies. If your visa is nearing its expiration before the notification is sent, please promptly contact your university's International Student Support office. The Graduate Route guide from UKCISA tells you exactly what to do if your visa end date and completion notification don't match up.
Conclusion
1. The total cost of MS in the UK in 2025–26 will be between Rs.33 lakh and Rs.69 lakh, depending on the subject, city, and university. Use the tuition and living cost figures for each city in this article to calculate your own total. There is a difference of Rs.20 lakh to Rs.35 lakh between a non-London STEM MS and a London business MS. Make this difference intentionally, not accidentally.
2. The visa rules for November 2025 say that you must have the full maintenance amount (up to Rs.17.24 lakh for London and Rs.13.20 lakh for places outside of London) in your bank account for 28 days in a row before you can apply for a visa. This is not money spent; it is proof of funds. Put this money into a special account before you receive your university offer, not after.
3. Students who start their MS in September 2026 and apply for the Graduate Route after September 2027 will be in the new 18-month post-study window. Have a clear plan for that time: Before you get there, make a list of the companies you want to work for, check the UK Register of Licensed Sponsors to see which companies in your target sector are currently sponsoring Skilled Worker Visas, and start your job search in Month 1 of your Graduate Route, not Month 12.

FAQs
-
How much does it cost for an Indian student to get an MS in the UK in 2026?
For one year, an MS in the UK costs between ₹33 lakh and Rs.69 lakh for Indian students in 2026-27. The cost varies by subject, university, and city. Most universities outside of London that offer STEM programs charge between Rs.33 lakh and ₹49 lakh per year. Programs in business or STEM that are based in London cost between ₹48 lakh and Rs.69 lakh. This includes the cost of tuition, living expenses, a visa, IHS, and getting set up. MSc programs cost more than BA programs. BA programs cost less than MA programs.
-
Is MS pricier in the UK than in the US?
In the UK, the full MS program costs between Rs.33 lakh and Rs.69 lakh because it lasts one year instead of two. In the US, a similar MS program lasts two years and costs about Rs.60 lakh to Rs.1.2 crore in tuition. You'll save a year's worth of school and living costs in the UK. The trade-off is that you can only work for 18 months after graduation on the Graduate Route (starting in January 2027) instead of the three years you can work with a STEM degree in the USA.
-
How much does it cost for an Indian student to get an MS in the UK?
The University of Bolton, Leeds Beckett University, the University of West London, and Staffordshire University all have lower international tuition fees for MS programs. Annual tuition can range from £9,000 to £13,000 (Rs.11.28 lakh to Rs.16.29 lakh). Queen's University Belfast, the University of Dundee, and the University of Stirling are some of the better-known research universities that charge reasonable fees for what they offer. For 2025–26, always check the university's official fee page to see what the costs are.
-
If I want to study in the UK in 2026, how much money do I need to show?
UKVI changed the rules in November 2026, so now you have to show: (a) full payment for your first year of school; or (b) £1,529 per month for up to 9 months if you study in London (Rs.17.22 lakh total for 9 months); or (c) £1,171 per month for up to 9 months if you study outside of London (Rs.13.20 lakh total). You must have this money in your bank account for 28 days in a row, ending no more than 31 days before the date you apply for your visa. Find out more at gov.uk/student-visa.
-
How much does IHS cost for Indian students who want to get an MS in the UK?
There is an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,164 (Rs.1,45,873) for a master's degree that lasts one year in the UK. This is because a student visa for a 12-month course is valid for about 17 months, with one month before the course, the course itself, and four months after the course. You pay £1,164, which is £776 for the year plus £388 for every six months. That amount has to be paid all at once when you apply for your visa. Find out more at gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application.
-
Can I work in the UK while I study for my MS?
Yes. With a UK Student Visa, a student can work up to 20 hours a week during school terms and full-time during official breaks. Most Indian MS students get part-time jobs in stores, on campus, or in food service. Twenty hours a week at £11 to £13 an hour brings in about Rs.1.5 lakh to Rs.2 lakh a month, which helps pay for living expenses. Working more than 20 hours during term time is against your visa and could make you less eligible for the Graduate Route.
