About the Scholarship

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) programme promotes academic performance in Ontario's publicly funded universities.

Since 1975, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship programme has awarded merit-based scholarships to Ontario's top graduate students in all fields of study.

The University of Toronto's scholarship programme is co-funded by the Province of Ontario and the University of Toronto.

The province assigns OGS awards to universities and specifies the quantity of prizes each institution may present to its students each year.

Scholarship amount details

The OGS is valued at $5,000 each session. As a result, recipients may get $10,000 or $15,000 for two or three consecutive sessions. In all cases, the graduate unit awarding the award will donate one-third of the total award earned by the students.

Eligibility

By the student deadline set by each graduate unit, you must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person as defined by paragraph 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada). International students with a temporary resident visa (student study permit) who are currently or plan to study at the University of Toronto are eligible for a limited number of OGS awards (valid study permits must be in force as of the graduate units' OGS international application deadline).

Be enrolled or planning to enrol full-time in a qualifying programme in 2022-2023.

A full-time programme of study at the University of Toronto for two or three terms that leads to a graduate degree qualifies as an eligible programme. A full-time student is one who is enrolled in at least 60% of a full course load (40 percent for students with a permanent impairment) or as their institution defines it. Each graduate unit determines programme eligibility on an individual basis. Students should carefully check the information provided by the graduate unit in which they wish to enrol to see if their programme is eligible for the OGS competition offered by that unit.

Have not used up all of their government-funded or OGS/QEII funding for their present level of study in their lifetime.

Have at least an A- (or equivalent) in each of the last two years of full-time study (full-time equivalent); or if the student has completed two years or more of graduate studies at the time of application, the student must only show an overall average of at least A- (or equivalent) on all graduate courses completed.

Application Process

Applicants must use the U of T School of Graduate Studies' unified online OGS application to submit an OGS application to their proposed graduate unit.

The whole application will be made accessible to the proposed graduate unit for assessment and consideration once it has been completed and submitted electronically.

Prospective students should be aware that OGS awards are not transferable between universities or graduate programmes at U of T. As a result, students must submit an OGS application to each graduate unit at U of T for which they wish to enrol, as well as to each Ontario university if they are applying to multiple universities (each institution will have its own unique OGS application and process).

Important note for visa students: Applicants who have a valid study permit by the OGS international application deadline set by their current or proposed graduate unit are permitted to apply using the same application process and internal deadlines. Graduate units will choose and submit a restricted number of applications to the School of Graduate Studies for adjudication in a centralised process.
