The National Institute of Genetics (NIG) was established by the Ministry of Education, Japan in 1949 for basic genetics research, as well as its instruction and promotion. The National Institute of Genetics (NIG) functions as the Genetics Program of The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI and offers graduate programs in Genetics. It offers a research internship program for undergraduate and postgraduate students who wish to gain research experience in genetics and related fields in life sciences. During this internship, participants will engage in independent research under the guidance of a designated mentor at NIG.

End-to-End Application Support

Our comprehensive program encompasses training in scientific research methodologies, effective scientific communication, and laboratory visits for one-on-one discussions with principal investigators. Upon completion, interns will share their experiences at the "NIGINTERN Reports Symposium" through presentations. NIG will issue a certificate to those who have completed the program. Interns are encouraged to partake in additional activities, including graduate program lectures, journal clubs, and seminars conducted by distinguished researchers both within and outside of NIG. Furthermore, Japanese language classes are available to enhance the overall learning experience.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be interested in life sciences. 
  • Applicant must be in the pre-final-year at the time of application, i.e. in the 3rd year of a 4-year bachelor’s program, in the 2nd year of a 3-year bachelor’s program, in the 4th year of a 5-year program, in the 1st year of a 2-year master’s program, or the 5th year of a 6-year program. 
  • Because of a highly competitive selection process, applications from non-pre-final students and students in a PhD course are not considered.

Interns must agree to fulfil the following requirements:

  • Conform to the regulations of NIG.
  • Maintain confidentiality of unpublished information obtained at NIG.
  • Dedicate full efforts to the NIGINTERN program. Complete assignments, tasks, and projects associated with the internship program.
  • Participate in the project for the full term of the internship (on a full-time basis, five days a week until the end of the designated term). Work on the days and times agreed with the supervisor.
  • Give an oral presentation on the scheduled day to report the research results.
  • Submit an essay and a questionnaire at the end of the internship term.
  • Submit all the boarding pass stubs of flights arranged by NIG to and from Japan.

How to apply?

Applications are accepted only through the online application system. 

  • The online application system opens on November 27, 2023, and closes at noon on January 9, 2024 (JST).
  • Students interested in applying for this program must read, understand and agree to the requirements of the program.

  • Letter of Motivation / Self-advertisement - Within 500 English words
  • Curriculum Vitae in English - Includes education records starting from high school. Be sure to indicate your current academic year.
  • Scanned Academic Transcript - Submit the latest undergraduate or postgraduate transcript that you can obtain. 
  • Two recommendation letters from your teachers.

Q. I’m in the 3rd year of a 5-year dual degree program. Am I eligible?

No, we accept applications only from students in their pre final-year at the time of application.

Q. When is the result announced?

Application numbers of successfully selected students will be posted on the website by the end of February 2024. The selected students will also receive a notification.

Q. I’ll be a pre-final-year student during the intern period but am currently in the 2nd year of a 4-year bachelor’s program. Am I eligible?

No, you must be a pre-final-year student at the time of application.

Q. Which countries/nationalities are eligible?

Applications from any country/nationality are accepted.

Q. Am I eligible to apply even if my university is not in the country of my citizenship?

Yes, the only condition is that applicants must live outside Japan at the time of application.
