Taking admission to law schools in the US is similar to other programs. Here is a snapshot of the application process for students to apply for an LLM in the US:

  • Search for a suitable law school as per their interest, specialised program, and budget, as per priority dates.
  • Fill out the form before the application deadline. Most law schools have their portal.
  • Send your applications by April or May, depending on your chosen intake.
  • Send transcripts and other documents directly to the university via post or mail.

Program Requirements for LLM in the US

To study abroad in the US, international students should have applicants need to have the following requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or bachelor’s degree (JD, LLB or equivalent) in relevant courses with at least an 83-86% score Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale or 83% at bachelors level (varies with the university)

The students can choose between the spring intake or fall intake. The Spring intake or spring semester (also known as the January semester) lasts from January to May. The fall intake is also known as August intake and covers September, December, or early January. Spring intake is the second-most popular intake after the fall intake. This deadline in the US is important. It begins in mid-July and lasts till early November. While aspirants can also choose summer intake, it is not offered by all the US universities. Also, note that most universities have either December as their deadline or January to February. The jobs for LLM grads can be on a contract basis, part-time, or full-time. Six months before the completion of the LLM program, students can opt for Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the USA. It is for 12 months and can be paid or unpaid, but it can act as financial aid if paid. You can get an H1B visa through OPT. If you want to practice as a lawyer in the US, you need to pass the bar examination. Prominent jobs in the USA available for students who have cleared graduate school are:
