The Graduate Record Examination, or GRE, is a standardised exam that evaluates the test taker’s aptitude for mathematical analysis, logical thinking, and analytical writing.

The test is a good analysis of a candidate’s abilities and gives graduate and business schools a clear picture of whether or not the applicant is ready for graduate-level courses. GRE is usually mandatory for business, law, and other master’s studies in the U.S. and Canada. To apply for GRE test candidates must log in to the ETS portal and pay an application fee of $213 to complete the registration. GRE is rated higher on the difficulty scale and requires preparation. The results are available within 10-15 days of the test. You also get to see an instant or a raw performance score right after the exam ends. ETS, which conducts the GRE, will inform you of your official results via mail. They also send it to the university of your choice within three weeks. The test score is valid for five years. ETS allows students to take retests if necessary. Currently, the GRE test can be taken both online and offline. The requirements and registration process is explained below.

GRE Test Requirements

The requirements for GRE are straightforward. There is no age barrier. However, since GRE scores are typically required for postgraduation courses, it is generally assumed that you already hold an undergraduate degree. ETS only requires you to carry ID proof for online and offline exams. Preferably, ETS suggests using your passport as proof of identification, but Indian students may use their Aadhar card as well. You must note that ETS is very strict about proof of identification. Here are some things to remember:

  • The document must be valid.
  • The document must be government issued.
  • The name on the ID and the registered name must match completely.
  • The photograph in the document must match your face (Which implies it has to be a recently taken picture)
  • The document must have the candidate’s signature

ETS is aware that applicants who have received refugee status or political asylum may not be able to get a current passport. Such cases are exceptions, and ETS will approve your application considering that you write to The ETS Office of Testing Integrity at TSReturns@ets.org a minimum of seven days before the exam. You will have to submit an alternate document to get approval.
