What is dMAT percentile rank, and how is it different from the dMAT score itself?

Your certificate carries two separate numbers, and mixing them up is the most common misunderstanding among Indian test-takers. The dMAT score is your correct answers converted to the 0 to 200 scale with a mean of 100, while the percentile rank measures where you stand against everyone else.

What the Percentile Rank Means

The dMAT percentile rank is the share of all test-takers, across every centre and test date, who scored equal to or below you. A percentile rank of 70 means 70% of everyone who has taken the test scored the same or lower than you, and 30% scored higher.

Why the Distinction Matters for Cut Scores

Universities can use percentile rank as a straightforward cut score, for example admitting only the top 10% of applicants by percentile rank. So if a university mentions a cut score, ask specifically whether that refers to a raw score threshold or a percentile-rank threshold, since programs reference either depending on how they structure shortlisting.

If a university ever tells you it uses a cut score for dMAT, ask them directly and in writing whether that means a raw score threshold or a percentile-rank threshold. Do not assume; the two measure genuinely different things, and the answer changes how you should interpret your own certificate.
