What are the four exemption categories that let an Indian student skip the dMAT exam entirely?
There are four exemptions. First, degree level: Bachelor's and PhD applicants are exempt. Second, confirmed exchange, double-degree, or partnership programs, with a confirmation letter and group number. Third, a field outside Engineering, Commerce, and Business. Fourth, the transition-date cutoff covered in the next question.
There are four distinct exemption categories, and it is worth checking all of them against your situation rather than just the one that seems most obvious. If any single category fits you, you can skip the dMAT for that application.
Degree-level and program-based exemptions
First is a degree-level exemption: Bachelor's applicants are exempt outright since the dMAT applies only at Master's level, and PhD applicants are fully exempt since the test is not part of doctoral admissions at all. Second is an exchange, double-degree, or partnership exemption: if you are applying through an officially confirmed exchange program, double-degree program, or university partnership, you do not need the dMAT, provided you submit a confirmation letter from your home institution or the German partner institution, plus your group number, alongside your APS documents.
Field-based and transition-date exemptions
Third is a field-based exemption: if your undergraduate degree sits entirely outside Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, and Business/Management, you are exempt regardless of intake or degree level. Fourth is a transition-date (cutoff) exemption, based on the 29 June 2026 date and covered in the next question.
My Advice
Check all four categories against your situation, not just the one that seems most obviously relevant. Students on partnership programs, in particular, often miss the exchange exemption entirely and register unnecessarily; always confirm your program's official status with your coordinator before assuming you need the test.
