The legal limit for student visa holders in Ireland is 20 hours of part-time work per week during term time, and 40 hours per week during official holiday periods, including summer holidays and the Christmas and Easter breaks. In practice, some employers will offer students more hours than the legal limit, particularly during busy periods. Students need to be aware that exceeding the 20-hour limit during term time is a visa condition violation, even if an employer requests or encourages it.

• The risk of enforcement is relatively low in practice, but the visa violation is real and can have consequences for future immigration applications including the post-study work transition.
• During the holiday periods when 40 hours are permitted, taking on additional shifts makes financial sense and many students work full-time during these periods.
• Most part-time employment in Dublin for international students falls into food service, retail, customer service, and, for computing students with some technical aptitude, IT support and helpdesk roles which pay better and are more relevant to the degree.
