Which intake is right for a graduate in Computer Science applying to Ireland?

The two intakes are not simply earlier or later versions of each other for Computer Science; September and January actually offer a different set of programs, so the choice is really about which specific MSc is on offer when.

September: The Main Intake for Computing Programs

September carries the widest range of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Cybersecurity master's programs, along with more scholarship opportunities. TU Dublin, for example, currently lists numerous full time computing programs for September, including Advanced Software Development, Data Science, DevOps, and Cybersecurity, and Trinity College Dublin's MSc Computer Science: Intelligent Systems also runs on a September start.

January: Useful Only If Your Specific Course Actually Offers It

January is genuinely more limited for computing, and some universities that list a January start do so only for select programs rather than their full computing lineup. Do not choose January simply because it looks less competitive; confirm first that the exact MSc you want is actually offered that term.

My Advice

In my experience, students pick January by default assuming it is easier to get into, without checking that their preferred specialisation is even running that term. If you can meet the requirements in time, target September for the fuller choice of programs and scholarships, and use January only as a genuine fallback if you need the extra months for IELTS or PTE preparation, finances, or documentation, and only after confirming the specific course you want has a January start.
