Which English proficiency test suits a graduate in Computer Science applying to UAE?
Several UAE universities accept more than one English test, but IELTS Academic remains the most portable choice if you are applying to multiple universities rather than one confirmed programme.
Why IELTS Academic Is the Safest Default
- Widely accepted: Zayed University requires IELTS Academic 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79 for regular admission to English-taught graduate programmes, and MBRSG's 2026 to 2027 graduate requirements list the identical thresholds.
- Consistent across universities: Abu Dhabi University uses the same IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79 combination for relevant postgraduate programmes, making IELTS the test that transfers most cleanly across your shortlist.
- Target 6.5, not just the minimum: even where the stated minimum is 6.0, aiming for 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 gives you flexibility if a specific programme sets a higher bar.
When TOEFL or PTE Makes Sense Instead
- TOEFL iBT: equally strong academically and widely accepted, particularly at research-oriented universities.
- PTE Academic: accepted at some UAE institutions, such as the American University in the Emirates, which lists PTE Academic 50 alongside IELTS 6.0 and TOEFL iBT 79, but acceptance varies more by university than IELTS does.

My Advice
If your bachelor's degree in India was taught entirely in English, do not automatically assume you still need IELTS; several UAE universities, including Khalifa University and MBRSG, may waive the requirement with an official Medium of Instruction letter, though documentation rules vary considerably. Unless you have already confirmed every university on your shortlist accepts your MOI letter, sit IELTS Academic anyway, ideally by October or November 2026, so your score is ready well before application deadlines close.
