Both countries eventually lead to permanent residency, but the real bottleneck for a Computer Science graduate in either place is not the visa rules themselves, it is getting a qualifying skilled job first. Germany's current pathway simply rewards that job faster once you have it.

Germany Versus UK: PR Pathway Compared

CountryPR RouteTypical TimelineBest Suited To
GermanyEU Blue Card to Settlement Permit21 to 27 months once employedSoftware, IT, AI or data roles, especially with German B1
UKSkilled Worker visa to Indefinite Leave to Remain5 years of qualifying residenceEnglish-speaking environment, UK-specific career networks

Why Germany Currently Has The Edge

  • EU Blue Card speed: eligible holders can reach settlement in 27 months generally, or as early as 21 months with B1-level German.
  • No mandatory German master's: a recognised foreign degree plus a qualifying job can lead directly into the Blue Card route.
  • UK's Graduate visa shortened: the UK Graduate visa becomes 18 months rather than 2 years for applications made from 1 January 2027 onward, tightening the runway to find sponsored work.

My Advice

Do not pick a country purely on the theoretical fastest PR route on paper. For a Computer Science graduate, the real bottleneck is landing a good sponsored job, and German language skills materially improve your employability there. If English-speaking work culture and UK-specific tech networks matter more to you than shaving off a couple of years on settlement, the UK remains a reasonable backup despite the longer path.
