Many popular study destinations offer dependent visas for spouses of international students, but the rights and requirements vary by country.

- United States: Spouses can join on F-2 or J-2 visas. F-2 dependents cannot work; J-2 dependents may apply for work authorization.
- United Kingdom: Spouses and children can apply as dependants if the student meets certain course and sponsorship criteria.
- Canada: Spouses of full-time students in eligible programs can apply for an open work permit.
- Australia: Spouses can accompany students and usually work up to 40 hours per fortnight; full work rights may apply for postgraduate research dependants.
- New Zealand: Spouses of students in eligible programs can get a Partner of a Student Work Visa, allowing full-time work.
- Germany, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Austria: Spouses can join on dependent or family reunification visas, often with work rights (subject to each country’s current rules).

Visa rules and work rights are subject to change.
