What are the benefits of studying IT in Ireland currently?

The real advantage of studying IT in Ireland is not the degree by itself; it is the combination of an English-language education system, a dense multinational technology presence, and immigration routes that specifically recognise IT occupations, all operating together.

A Genuinely Large Technology Ecosystem

IDA Ireland reports more than 106,000 people employed in the ICT industry, with major companies including Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce and IBM operating substantial European operations in the country; IDA Ireland also states that 16 of the world's top 20 technology companies have operations in Ireland. This concentration matters for IT students specifically because it spans software engineering, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data analytics, AI and semiconductor and hardware technology, giving genuine breadth for internships and graduate hiring.

IT Occupations on the Critical Skills List

Ireland's Critical Skills Occupations List, effective from 13 May 2026, includes a broad range of IT roles: IT specialists and managers, IT project and programme managers, IT business analysts, systems architects and designers, and programmers and software development professionals. Eligible jobs on this list can provide a route from graduate employment toward the Critical Skills Employment Permit, though the current rules still require meeting salary and job-offer thresholds; the degree alone does not guarantee eligibility.

A Real Post-Study Runway

Under the Third Level Graduate Programme, Level 8 graduates receive up to 12 months of graduate permission, while Level 9 (master's) graduates receive up to 24 months, granted initially as 12 months with a further 12 months available subject to conditions. During Stamp 1G graduate permission, you can work up to 40 hours a week while searching for qualifying employment.

Costs and Competition Still Apply

Education Ireland lists 2025/26 non-EU postgraduate Science and Technology tuition at roughly €15,000 to €31,000, and Dublin housing is expensive and competitive. An IT degree also does not guarantee a job; skills, projects, internships and interview performance still decide the outcome against Irish, EU and international competition.

My Advice

Choose your IT specialisation by checking it against the current Critical Skills Occupations List before you enrol, rather than picking a course simply because IT or Computer Science appears in the title, since the job title, duties and salary at the end determine your later employment-permit eligibility. Budget realistically for Dublin housing separately from tuition, and treat part-time work as a supplement to your finances, not your primary funding plan.
