If a company sponsors me, can I stay longer than the post-study work permit duration in Germany?
Yes, in both the United States and Germany, employer sponsorship can let you stay longer than the initial post-study work permit period.
- United States: After your OPT (Optional Practical Training), if an employer sponsors you, you may transition to an H-1B visa. This allows you to work in the U.S. for up to six years, usually in three-year increments. The employer must file the H-1B petition for you.
- Germany: After your studies, you can extend your permit for up to 18 months to find a job. Once you secure employment related to your degree, you can switch to a residence permit for employment, letting you stay and work long-term.
Visa rules are subject to change.
