How will my application be marked for the Government of Ireland scholarship?
Applications for the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship are scored out of 100 marks. Academic qualifications and work experience carry 40 marks, the personal statement carries 45 and your two references carry 15. An independent panel scores and ranks applications after shortlisting by the Irish institutions.
Your application is assessed out of 100 marks, and the personal statement carries the largest share at 45 marks. Your academic background and work experience count for 40, while your two references make up the last 15. The scoring happens after the deadline, once institutions have shortlisted candidates.
Marking scheme
| Assessment area | Marks |
|---|---|
| Academic qualifications, achievements and work experience | 40 |
| Personal statement | 45 |
| Two references | 15 |
| Total | 100 |
How the process works
- The Higher Education Authority (HEA) first passes applications to the relevant Irish institutions.
- Institutions shortlist candidates using their own requirements and priorities.
- An independent panel then scores and ranks the shortlisted applications.
- The 45 personal statement marks are split equally across three areas, 15 each: what you would gain as a scholar, your plans for Irish society and cultural exchange, and your long-term interest in building links with Ireland.
- For the 2026 cycle, 60 scholarships were expected to be awarded, and the official 2026 process does not mention an interview.
- The final outcome for the 2026 cycle was scheduled for early June 2026.
My Advice
Give your personal statement the most time, since it carries nearly half of the marks. Address all three areas separately with specific examples, especially your plans to engage with Irish society. Ask your referees early so their letters are ready well before the deadline.
